The Steval Pumas put on a fantastic eighty minute display of fast paced, brutal and effective rugby to take the title of First Division Curry Cup Champions! From the start of the game they showed their intent by playing very direct and physical rugby. The EP Kings tried their best to stay in the game but the Pumas where just to pumped-up for the final and never allowed the visitors any breathing space.

The result sees a Puma side that has come a long way over the past years finally get their hands on some silverware. One has to admit that coach Jimmy Stonehouse has been doing a marvelous job with his side over the past three seasons. Even when the Pumas where reduced to thirteen men in the final ten minutes of the game, they still managed to cross the chalk for two more converted tries. All rugby supporters would like to say that they are the best supporter for their province or country but I have to tip hat to the 10 000+ crowd that was present last night at the Mbombela stadium. Standing on the pitch you could almost feel the ground shake as the crowd roared their appreciation for the Pumas opening try.

Man of the match winner, Coenie van Wyk had a sublime performance with his ability to spot gaps and used his boot to good effect. Another player that really put his hand up for the Pumas is ex Sharks wing, Rosco Specman who’s ability to create try scoring opportunities was unrivaled during this years First Division season. A big congratulations go out to the Steval Pumas for their dream season and ending it with a Million bucks richer for their brilliant effort.

Unfortunately for the Pumas the celebrations will be short as they now prepare for their first relegation match against the Griquas next week Saturday in Kimberly. One has to wonder what will be the greater victory for the Pumas, winning the First Division or being elevated to the Currie Cup Premier Division?

  • Based on what I saw on Fri im not sure Griquas have the fire power to beat this Pumas side. Only thing in Griquas favour is that it will be hard for the Pumas to raise themselves for 2 more big games following that final where there was a lot of emotion and passion. It can drain players so will be interesting to see what they still have in their tank against fresh Griquas players.
