Young flyhalf Lionel Cronje is certainly vying for the title of “most traveled” player, having announced today that he’s leaving the Lions to join the Brumbies ahead of Super Rugby next year.
Cronje, who came to prominence as a member of the Free State under 20 side, has had stints with Western Province and the Blue Bulls before moving to the Lions this season. Since arriving in Joburg, though, he’s battled for game time, with Elton Jantjies and Marnitz Boshoff preferred in the number 10 shirt.
The flyhalf crunch in Joburg is only going to get worse next year, with former Sharks youngster Willie du Plessis set to move to the Lions, joining Guy Cronje (another former Shark) as understudies to Boshoff and Jantjies.

So the overhyping chickens are going to Canberra to roost.
There’s a lesson to be learnt here.
@vanmartin (Comment 1) :
Goosen has not played for the Brumbies … Yet ?
Good luck to headboy Crunch, I hope he can finally settle in Australia
Really rate this guy and wish we could have have considered him as a fullback especially with Ludik leaving. Keep an eye on him guys, this guy is very talented.
@GreatSharksays (Comment 4) : I reckon far too talented for SA, he’s got the skill and flair of Australasians and that was probably a big negative for his career in SA.
I think a guy like Nick Mallett could have done wonders with Lionel
Maybe he should have sticked to one team rather than doing all the traveling in search of his “big break”.
@JD (Comment 6) : damn right
Hear Conrad Hoffman is going the same way and Ettien Oosthuizen is coming to you guys
@Zibbie (Comment 8) : Is Oosthuizen going back to the Lions?
