The Sharks have confirmed that Beast Mtawarira, Willem Alberts and Kyle Cooper have all been passed fir to play in Saturday’s Currie Cup Final.

Alberts hasn’t seen any action since leaving the field on a stretcher during the first half of the Springboks’ final Rugby Championship game. His neck injury has now cleared up and he will be able to play in the domestic showpiece. Prop Mtawarira was a late injury withdrawal ahead of last weekend’s semi-final, but he too comes back into the mix this week,

Hooker Cooper took a blow to the shoulder against the Cheetahs, but also isn’t seriously injured enough to put his participation in the Final in doubt; this is especially important given that Bismarck du Plessis is currently attending a disciplinary hearing that may see him miss out.

The Sharks have yet to clear Jannie du Plessis and Jean Deysel, the other two injury doubts in the squad at the moment.

  • @capesharks (Comment 3) : He is the one player that can cause WP grief = as long as he can just control the “red mist” that sometimes cloud his thinking.

  • Woohoo! Given Bismarck’s likely absence, the most important player cleared is probably Cooper…
    Come on men!!

  • Any idea how Bismarck pleaded and what his defence was? He was provoked. Anyway, saw Scarra’s tip tackle, he actually drove the player into the ground. He should have Any news on Deysel?

  • Coetzee, possibly ALberts and Deysel in one matchday 22 is a bad thing!!! We will not win if Botes doesnt start

  • @pienaar111 (Comment 14) : Agreed Botes will be crucial for us, especially if we lose Bismarck as well.

  • @Letgo (Comment 18) : @pierre_mackie (Comment 17) : @Original Pierre (Comment 15) :

Here is the Sharks team I would like for the final, this taking into account injured players out etc.

For me we need to strengthen 2 areas, Lineouts and scrums so Peet for me should drop to the bench not because he is bad but because Stephan Lewies reads lineouts better, and in the scrums I felt Coetzee or alberts shoul be hunting down Vermeulen who has been superb this season.

He needs to be hit off his feet more come ruck time by the likes of Alberts or Coetzee, Coetzee when he started was playing 8thman and Alberts has a long history at 8thman.

At fullback I feel SP has been making quite a few mistakes and I would rather have a very solid Ludik at the back that seldom makes a mistake.

Play a real center at 13 with Fransie in Whitehead.

    15 Ludik
    14 Odwa
    13 Whitehead
    12 Fransie
    11 Mvovo
    10 Lambie
    09 Mcleod
    08 Coetzee
    07 Alberts
    06 Botes ( Capt)
    05 Lewies
    04 PSDT
    03 Herbst/Jannie
    02 Bismark/Cooper
    01 Beast

    16 Cooper/Hadebe
    17 Jannie/Minnie/Chadwick
    18 Marais
    19 Deysel/Daniel
    20 Reinach
    21 Zeilinga
    22 Williams/S P Marais

  • Maybe the Sharks should be more defense orientated for the final and surprise the WP? let them make the mistakes, we used to be a very dangerous counter attacking team? play percentage rugby?

We actually have a better kicking team than the WP

  • @pierre_mackie (Comment 17) : I agree! Alberts and BEast off the bench in the last 20 min or so! Finals arent won in the first 20min! Never underestimate the value of a strong bench!

  • @sharks_lover (Comment 19) : With the loose trio? of course they all able to scrum down at 6, 7 or 8 and can switch around as needed

  • @SheldonK (Comment 21) : I disagree slightly boet, Alberts and Beast should start, we do not need the WP gaining ascendancy from the start, we need a strong scrum from minute 1

  • We have 1 thing going for us this year that might help? that is WP are the big favorites, This might help to prepare the team better mentally.

  • @sharks_lover (Comment 19) : Awesome team…but I would still have Keegan’s skills at 8 for sure. Ludik at 15 and Whitehead at centre is the right choice

  • Comment 25, posted at 22.10.13 08:21:28 by pienaar111 Reply

  • @sharks_lover (Comment 23) : I understand what u mean but from the start all the players are fresh and motivated etc so chadwick, cooper herbst should be able to hold their own for the first half when the game is tight.Just think of a situation where beast, alberts etc start…the game is tight, these guys arent 100% so at 60 min they need to be subbed! That leaves 20min with less experienced guys against WP in a final away from home. Remember WP will bring guys off the bench like Burger, De Jong etc

  • @SheldonK (Comment 26) : @pienaar111 (Comment 25) : I hear ya both, Who knows? just hoping we can pull this off?

Thing is we need to power up our scrum and Daniel brings skills but not power?
Also Chadwick has been around a few seasons now and should be experienced enough to start or come off the bench.

Also the chances are Fourie might not be playing and this means Burger will probably start.

  • @John Galt (Comment 28) : Pity though John, I also do not think Jannie will pass a fitness test, So it weakens our forwards even more. All the more reason to start with bigger loose trio.

  • @sharks_lover (Comment 27) : To be honest most coaches would start with their best sides and believe their bench is good enough to finish off the work done by the 1st choice. Ive just seen of late how important match day 22s are. Yes the starting 15 is important but too many coaches ( Hyneke Meyer included) doesnt know how to use his bench correctly! A strong bench used correctly can win you games! Yes the bench mustnt weaken the starting 15 but dont throw all your eggs in 1 basket as they say. Imagine in 2nd half if we could bring Beast,Alberts,Reinach and Steyn off the bench?
