The Sharks team to face Western Province in the Currie Cup final this weekend see only two changes from the team that took down the Cheetahs last weekend..

Willem Alberts and Jannie du Plessis replace Jean Deysel and Wiehahn Herbst respectively, while the rest of the team remains unchanged.

Jean Deysel has not recovered sufficiently from his hamstring strain to take his place in the match 22, which allows Jacques Botes to play off the bench.

The backline is completely unchanged, allowing key combinations to start where they finished last week. Hopefully we will see the likes of Pat Lambie and Frans Steyn fire from the get go.

Sharks: 15 SP Marais, 14 Odwa Ndungane, 13 Louis Ludik, 12 Francois Steyn, 11 Lwazi Mvovo, 10 Patrick Lambie, 9 Charl McLeod, 8 Keegan Daniel (captain), 7 Willem Alberts, 6 Marcell Coetzee, 5 Pieter-Steph du Toit, 4 Peet Marais, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Bismarck du Plessis, 1 Tendai Mtawarira.

Substitutes: 16 Kyle Cooper, 17 Wiehahn Herbst, 18 Stephan Lewies, 19 Jacques Botes, 20 Cobus Reinach, 21 Fred Zeilinga, 22 Heimar Williams.

  • I would’ve kept the front-row from last week, the props have done great all season. Jannie & Beast suffered against WP…

Apart from that I’ve got zero complaints about the side.

  • Pretty solid side that! Set pieces is always key vs WP. Im hoping the Mienie is a typo though unless Herbst injured? i know many arent fans but I like the Steyn/Ludick combo in midfield. But please please can we play our forwards off Lambie…pretty pleaseeeee

  • Would rather had Willem coming off the bench after his injury.

Not overly excited with Ludik at 13 – he is good defensively but does not really offer much on attack from there.

Fortunately Odwa plays like a second fullback so he can assist SP there.

Still pretty much a S15 side – so should be a cracker of a game

  • @SheldonK (Comment 13) : I’m a big fan of that combo as well.

Gotta feel for Deysel. The guy has put his body on the line every time he set foot on the field.

  • @Thys Brits (Comment 8) : It was not so much the front row at fault there. With the new rules, the back 5 really need to provide the power in the scrum. WP’s timing was perfect (sometimes almost too perfect), and always hit the Sharks when the hooker was about to hook the ball.

  • Comment 17, posted at 24.10.13 13:45:49 by Bokhoring Reply
  • Massive pack that. If they don’t dominate the collision point, the WP will run our relatively slow and cumbersome backline ragged.

  • @John Galt (Comment 18) : The Sharks must be careful not to overdo the pick and drive – very risky when playing against 2 really good fetchers.

  • See, during my lunch break.

I’m very happy with the team. Little bummed for Deysel, but happy that Botes will be covering the bench.

And we didn’t really expect many changes, did we? It’s good that this backline played together last week. I thought especially our defense was good last week with Steyntjie and Ludik covering the midfield.

  • @gregkaos (Comment 16) : I like the combo beacuse they are good defensively as well as both have good hands and can offer a lot on attack if used correctly. Last week they used Steyn to either bash it up or used him as a decoy and went straight to ludick. Steyn and Ludick are nto steppers, but both are strong and run hard. So play the ball through the hands and let Ludick run off Steyn- Steyn will put him in gaps and Ludick has the speed and power to break the line. But unfortunately our game plan is way to predictable with 1 off forwards crashing up the ball in channel 1 every time and then the ball just gets shovelled wide eventually. There is no depth on most occassions.

And he was so close to being a Bok after that one good performance.

  • The South African media are showing their Western Province bias this week. They can’t be more obvious. You can’t find a site not clearly hoping for a WP win this weekend, except this one of course, but at least we’re not trying to hide who we are.

  • As a Sharks supporter, I feel like we may have got the combinations wrong here.

If I was the Wp coach, I’d instruct them to kick the ball. Our pack is enormous, which will tire them. SP Marais attacks well but his defence is bad (he hides it because Odwa is a good fullback). Odwa is a bit pedestrian and not a real threat (thankfully, the same can be said of Gerrard vd Heever). Frans Steyn is heavy and won’t turn well.

I expect Kolbe and Aplon to be real threats around the 60 minute mark, where our big boys are tired and our subs have not settled.

Having said that, wouldn’t it be great if we could set a solid platform with that pack and make some space for the Lambie magic?

  • @josefgremlin (Comment 27) : They can kick on our back 3 all day. Solid under the high ball across the board. And with Lambie, Steyn and Ludik on our midfield defense should be pretty terrifying! After 60 minutes Botes will come on for Alberts which should ensure the cover defence.

    Sharks by 15!

  • Heavy pack can work, with botes to come on later. Odwa is solid, but the other two can be better at the back. That midfield is not that great. How long is paul jordaan still out……

  • Defence wins finals and can not fault with this teams defensive credentials. If wp plans to kick on our back three let me just remind everyone … pat lambie, frans steyn, ludik, odwa, and marais are all fullbacks in their own rite … we should dominate this department. To me the key is set pieces … we fell down there last year and hopefully this team has enough character to really step it up in both the scrums and lineouts … go sharks …
