Swiel lined up for Sharks

Western Province have announced that 20-year-old fly half Tim Swiel is on his way to join the Sharks.
While there has as yet been no official confirmation of a contract from the Durban union, all the signs point to the promising youngster, who spearheaded Province’s u21 title charge this year, playing his rugby in black and white in 2014.

New Sharks Director Jake White is believed to be a big fan of Swiel’s play. However, one would fancy that the young man will need to be patient, with the Sharks already boasting the likes of Pat Lambie, Fred Zeilinga and Hansie Graaff as senior fly half options. Rob du Preez and Jean-Luc du Plessis will also compete strongly for the under 21 spot next year.

  • The only man ahead of him at 10 IMO is Lambie. Could maybe also be an option at fullback…

  • From what I’ve seen he looks like a decent running 10/15, must say that we do have depth and he will have to prove himself to crack a nod above half the players we have.

Good to have him here though.

  • I have a feeling he’ll start his apprenticeship by rotating with Marais. We need more depth in that position.

Edit: to explain my thinking here, Jake White used a young Frans Steyn at wing and fullback before moving him closer to the action.

  • Not that impressed, lots of flyhalfs around at the moment. Also senters, but we need more big wings. We still only have habana and JP, and now everyone is SOooo excited about the midget from the cape……Where is our big strong finishers!!!!!

  • Swiel is definitely a great impact player to have off the bench; but I see him having a good shout for fullback and then have SP on the wing and JPP on the other.

Guys go crazy for Kolbe and his attacking skills, but imo this guy can be just as good! His sprinting times have been compared with Habana…he is very fast!

  • Sharks have just signed prospectively the best 10 in SA……mark my words, this young man is special. What a blow to WP / Stormers. How AC can be expected to perform the role of Head Coach as well as D O R is beyond me. All the while Brendan Venter sits a few kms away …..mind blowing.

His best skills are obviously his running skills, so i would def. be putting him at 15 to start with and then 10 in the CC…if he hasn’t made the Boks…guys rate Kolbe, but i believe Swiel is a more complete attacking package.

Just waiting for confirmation of the Ossthuizen signing…he will be playing next to PSDT next year if we have signed him…out and out number 4, has played flank and he is 20 years old and 120kg…Jake/John Smit have made two very very good signings in Ettienne and Swiel!! Well Done.

  • Swiel is a great signing by the Sharks, this kid is the real deal……twice the talent Zeilinga is.

Its just another example of how poor Coetzee is at WP with him overlooking Swiel for the average Coleman……..much like Quinn Roux being overlooked for de Kock Steenkamp……..we all know where Roux has pissed off to now and will no doubt end up playing against the Boks instead of for them

  • Best News since White was announced been punting him as a shark for years. And White is the right man to get Swiel’s head back on track…such big fan as I am of the man- he has a very big case of the Windgat!

Swiel for those who don’t know is a very Good Goal kicker and Fullback. He can also play a extremely good game at 10. He has enough speed to slot in on the wings.

Great acquisition!!! Thumbs Up to the Great White of Sharks Rugby 😉

  • @Ludz (Comment 24) : well to be Fair about a year ago I was concerned not seeing the man feature and I made some enquiry and this was the average response. But to be fair to Swiel he is eminently talented, and if he was a Aussie he would have been a feature on the senior side, he has the same pedigree maybe even better skilled than Miss O ‘ Connor. Playing Rugby and Club rugby for 13 years (after school) I can also vouch that the best players always had a little Windgat- a bit of over confidence that probably made then perform better. Hopefully White can help him excel and channel the confidence.

  • From the WP website..
“WP, however, have contracted the necessary depth in the shape of 2012 SA Schools flyhalf Ryno Eksteen who is back to full fitness from a knee injury.
Furthermore, schoolboy flyhalves Brandon Thomson (SA Schools, 2013) and Ernst Stapelberg (the highly-rated No.10 from Eastern Province) are part of the star-studded Western Province Rugby Insitute intake for next year and will add to the selection options for the WP Under-19 and Under-21 teams in 2014. (See that squad here.)
Eksteen has two years of Under-21 rugby ahead of him, whilst Thompson and Stapelberg will be Under-19 in 2014.

Clearly WP dont see Swiel as anything more than an age group player, while the Sharks, Im sure, see him as a possible senior group player.

No wonder he was prepared to jump at the opportunity.

This is a great signing as a 10/15 backup.

He’ll definitely get game time at the Sharks. Something which wouldn’t have been guaranteed at the Stormers.

  • This only makes sense if he is seen as a 15 and secondly as emergency 10 cover. He is a talented player and perhaps would better suit the fullback position than 10. Although he will definitely get game time at 10 in CC next year i reckon. For me Dupreez isnt the best 10- id prefer if he moved to 12. Big guy with good distribution. He just doesnt read the game well enough at 10.

  • Tim Swiel made himself unavailable for the Junior Boks because he didn’t want to end up tied to SA for life…. he has a British passport and sees a potential international future for England.

I guess what I’m saying is that we should probably accept that Swiel, like our new DoR, sees the Sharks as a stepping stone, rather than a final destination.

@robdylan (Comment 38) : I really hope to see him play for the Boks one day…i remember reading that he was looking to play international rugby overseas (made me stress because he is flippin talented); but that doesn’t make sense if he can play for the Boks one day…will be a huge loss if he was to turn his back on SA. Jake and Smit will definitely do their best to make him a South African international and not a British one.

My excitement about him coming to the Sharks is that he has got certain abilities that you cannot coach, or very difficult to coach! He has got pace to burn, he can step off both feet, his spatial awareness is of the highest order.

His attacking play reminds me so much of Christian Cullen. I think that he will be devastating from broken play. I can’t wait to see him play in a Sharks jersey from fullback.

  • Swiel has to bulk up, he has the skills to play 12 and 15 but at 85kg is not going to make the cut. He is 1.80 m 85kg, he is very very fast. Habana fast! He needs to have a look at Wilkenson and Adam Ashleigh Coopers stature. This boy can play and not only create but break the line. But the space in Super rugby is created breaking tackles. And offloading in them. Can’t wait to see what he does under Great White.

You would expect him to put on 5 – 10kgs in the next 2 years. So his size really has nothing to do with it in fact it is a positive. By then he will be bigger and faster than Dan Carter.

I would love to see White back at the Boks but after 5 years at least with the Sharks. Or have a Mentorship plan formulated from today to the day of Whites departure. The Outlier Model. Mentorship and apprenticeship…transfer knowledge and replicate success. Done and dusted 😉 sounds easy.

I can see Swiel playing a few games for the BOks, but a can see him playing 100 games for England I believe him that Good.
