The Stormers have announced the signing of Manuel Carizza, for the 2014 Super Rugby season.

Carizza is 29 years old and has taken part in almost all the Rugby Championship games over the last two years. He comes via Biarritz and more recently Racing Metro.

The Stormers already have Eben Etzebeth, De Kock Steenkamp, Michael Rhodes and Ruan Botha at their disposal, with news that Gerbrandt Grobler will miss most of next season ruling him out. Carizza is thus a perfect addition to an already powerful second row, and with his experience, is sure to add value.

They were also talking of looking at an experienced wing to offset the loss of habana and vd heever.

  • Yes….wp / stormers need a physical wing, there has been talk of a Samoan bit seems to have died down….
As for Vergallo, crucial we find a class 9….an area where we lack class imo…

  • @grant10 (Comment 6) : crusaders signed nemani nadolo, should be quite physical at 1.95m and just under 130kg.

  • Rhodes will probably be suspended once a month so Stormers will need the extra lock.

  • @50shadesofblackandwhite (Comment 8) : Yes….hope he comes through…..Taute should also be fit at start of superrugby. I know we almost signed Mapoe but it fell through, not sure why. without a DOR WP are struggling to recruit and retain….rumours that Gert Smal may be unveied as DOR….but its all rumour currently. Dont know why we dont approach B Venter…

  • @grant10 (Comment 10) : one feels a player of viljoen’s skills and size will def come through.and he is also a goalkicker.must admit i was hoping the sharks could sign.

  • @50shadesofblackandwhite (Comment 13) : but you guys did hold on to jd schickerling.wonder if boland landbou’s sarel roux will be joining the sharks academy (was a bursary winnet at kearsney rugby festival)?

  • @robdylan (Comment 15) : lock -though at 1.94m a bit short.does weigh 109kg.think he could be converted into a loosie.

  • @grant10 (Comment 6) : how many foreign players are sa sr teams allowed to have in their squad?

  • @50shadesofblackandwhite (Comment 16) : sigh, we never learn.

Sharks need to be contracting 2m+ locks. We have enough blindside options.

  • @robdylan (Comment 18) : though in fairness he is an 18 year-old.lets give him 3 years?means he should then be pushing for senior selection in 2017.
Yes,sharks need to look for 6’7 (at least)locks because it is almost as if the traditional idea of 6’6 lock is no longer tall enough-which is why i put down carizza’s physical stats -2.02m 118kg.
The stormers are using rhodes 1.97m and elstadt 1.98m as blindside flankers mainly.
Jean Cook was a lock at grey and for sa schools side but is a 1.94 blindsider at the bulls (believe he is going to the cheetahs for next season).

  • @50shadesofblackandwhite (Comment 14) : He’s signed for the Cheetahs. Those Sharks Academy bursaries handed out at the Kearsney Festival are a bit of a joke. Of the 4 given this year only Wandile Mazibuko will actually take up the offer. Reece-Edwards and Bothma are at WP next year and Roux is at the Cheetahs

  • @50shadesofblackandwhite (Comment 21) : problem is, by the time a guy is 18, he’s already reached his final height. You can’t sign a 1.94m 18-year-old thinking he’s going to grow to 2m. It’s not going to happen at all if it hasn’t happened by that stage.

That’s the problem I have with the du Preez twins. Great players, but neither is tall enough to make it as a senior lock.

  • @robdylan (Comment 24) : was replying to the current number of blindside options at the sharks.give him 3 years to develop as a loosie (7/8).that means he will be pushing for senior selection by 2017 (long-term planning).

  • @robdylan (Comment 26) : just had a quick look at an article on the web dated 10 april this year and mentions that jd schickerling had not yet received an offer from wp (at time of writing).played sa schools previous year _as grade 11 pupil.wonder if the sharks approached him.surely they must have.does mention though that he says his 1st choice team to sign for would be wp.and he eventually did.

  • Right now all eyes are on pieter-steff and lood de jager in the nr5 jersey. Steff is big and physical, started out as nr7, nr4 and now nr5. Still would like to see if he can make the right lineout calls in big games like s15 semis againts big teams. Wp in cc final was no test…..Lood is looking very good too, not as big and physical, but play the field full, just like bekker. Then the 19year old Paul Willemse at the bulls look also good in the nr4 jersey…..that second row is looking good for the next couple of years

  • I would prefer to see the Stormers invest in Ruan Botha…….he would be the ideal partner for Etzebeth……..Botha is 2.05m and 118kg and has had little first class game time since playing for the Baby Boks two seasons ago. He was injured for much of this season, but we need to see him playing for the Stormers, not some Argentinian

  • @KingsArmy (Comment 29) : Paul Willemse and Lood de Jager look our best bets to back-up Etzebeth and PSDT.

I also want to see the Bulls move Jacques du Plessis back to lock, he is too big for flank
