Changes for Scotland clash likely

We are likely to see quite a few changes to the Springbok team to face Scotland this weekend.

News about Morne Steyn’s injury is that he suffered a back spasm during the warm up before the game, but that the team was hopeful that he could complete the match. This obviously didn’t happen, as we saw Pat Lambie take over the flyhalf spot around the seventeenth minute. Heyneke Meyer has said that he would not risk a half fit Morne Steyn, and would persist with Lambie should Steyn not prove his fitness this week.

Further to this, Meyer has been quoted as saying that Bakkies Botha is likely to start for the Boks against Scotland. Botha only joined the Bok group on Tuesday night, and his late arrival meant that he was not part of the 23 man squad to face Wales. This week he is likely to get a start as Meyer wants to see what he has to offer at International level.

Looking at the way the other big name players faired when returning from a long absence, Botha will have to play a good game to secure future test caps for the Springboks. Jaque Fourie looked off the pace at test level, something that one can understand, but if the coaches were aware of quite how far behind he was, surely he should have been given a spot on the bench to come on later?

Meyer has said that he will make a few surprise selections against the Scots, taking risks in certain areas. This is not only as a result of Scotland being the opposition, but also because of the match being played on a Sunday, which gives the Boks a day less to prepare for the last test on tour, against France.

  • I’m sorry but Bakkies is a part of the past. I loved watching him play but his time has come and gone. The same with Victor. He left on a high and by now coming back he risks his legacy.

Scotland is the time to play Etzebeth with PSDT and get started on the lock combination for the 2015 RWC. By playing Bakkies HM is taking us backwards and not forwards.

  • @Butchie34 (Comment 1) :

If playing Bakkies allows Meyer to select du Toit alongside him, to balance the experience, then by all means, go for it. But if he is simply going to play Bakkies next to Eben and put du Toit on the bench again, I am not in favour of this.

  • Bench is a bit off. All in the name of giving players experience !

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 2) :

He will not play Bakkies and Eben, there is no-one to call the line outs if he does.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 2) : I’m of the same opinion but I don’t trust Meyer not to try and push Bakkies in and keep Eben.

  • Sound like Scotland also decimated by injuries to key players.

Meyer should rest Steyn against Scotland, and have him fresh for the France test. Lambie to start at 10, and Goosen to get the last 30.

Etzebeth needs a rest too, and I would rather have PSDT and vd Merwe starting with Bakkies off the bench.

Strauss to start, and the Bizness of the bench.

  • @Morné (Comment 5) :

So you are suggesting that he will play Bakkies and du Toit?

Now that I can understand and something that is not the worst idea in the world..

  • @Talent (Comment 3) : I would be hesitant to make that many changes. Too much of a disruption to the run-on team could be very dangerous.

  • @Morné (Comment 5) : I thought Vermeulen calls the lineouts for the Stormers, can’t he do the same for the Boks?

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 8) : Bakkies and Etzebeth is an almost irresistible concoction of foul play ,senseless aggression and ill discipline; right up any vacantly minded Blue Bulls supporters ally 😆

Include Bismarck in the front row and we might just see three yellow cards in a single match!

  • @Letgo (Comment 9) : Meyer wont ,he is racking up that win percentage ,if nothing else. It will cost him eventually.

    Completely unbiased supporter 😉

As for the comment on Meyer, I think he is going to surprise us with some selections for this match ( I really hope I am right and he doesn’t lose his balls and plays the same team again)

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 8) :

If Bakkies plays, it will be with PSDT or Flip.

    @Bokhoring (Comment 10) :

De Kock calls for WP, not Vermeulen.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 15) : I wouldn’t hold my breath.

I rather liked Brendan Venters coaching mantra ;leaving the Sharks better off than before he had been involved with them. Meyer wont hold the same sentiments .He will damage player carreers and our domestic player demographics before he sees that win percentage drop. Props to PDV who refused to do just that…

  • I think Strauss will start. Id like to see Coenie at LH and Malherbe play again with Adriaanse bench. If Bakkies is to start it may be with Flip, but would be nice to see Bakkies and PSDT. Kolisi will start for Louw i think. Would like to see Coetzee in the 23.
I think Pienaar may start with Lambie. JDV and Fourie will stay i feel. I think LeRoux may replace 1 of the wings and id expect Kirchner to start at 15.

  • Bakkies is surely a part of the past. Etsebeth and PSDT to start and MAAAAAYBE Bakkies on the bench. Lambie to play at least 65 mins and maybe Goosen the other 15. Pienaar should start so as to keep Fourie Du Preez very fresh for France. Pienaar is another reliable option for kicking to posts. Note: Wales’ place kicker was their fullback. Lambie is the best flyhalf this country has. He will become more accurate in his place kicking as his confidence in the number 10 position improves. Not Kirchner at 15 – much rather Willie Le Roux

  • BAkkies is playing great rugby in France. And he’s only 33, so the comparison with Matfield is not valid.

  • @VinChainSaw (Comment 22) : And we just don’t have great depth in the Bok lock deparment yet, two injuries and we’re in pretty serious trouble.

  • HM will start Bakkies ? Eben tired in the CC final and the weekend. Bakkies and Flip to start(they played together for the F.. BB) PSDT on the bench with 30 min game time. Adriaandse will have to a get a run. Frans M – not convinced the ALL Blacks will eat him alive. Pat did not step up and convince this weekend.

  • @Observer (Comment 24) :

I’d cut Malherbe a bit of slack. He was scrumming Gethin Jenkins, 99 cap veteran and B&I lions front row.

    Eish, fire alamr.

  • I thought malherbe did great for a 22 year old TH. IF vermeulen call the lineouts at WP and strms I can see why HM doesn’t want him doing it at the bokke, their lineouts are crap! Eben needs a break, and flip had actually a good game. Maybe also give vermeulen some rest, gonna need him agaainst france, maybe play alberts at 8 and kolisi at 7 with coetzee on the bench. Will also like to see adriaanse….

  • My prediction (not necessarily what I would do):

    1. Steenkamp
    2. Strauss
    3. Adriaanse
    4. Botha
    5. du Toit
    6. Louw
    7. Coetzee
    8. Vermeulen
    9. Pienaar
    10. Lambie
    11. Habana
    12. Serfontein
    13. de Villiers
    14. Aplon
    15. Kirchner

    16. du Plessis
    17. Beast
    18. Adriaanse
    19. Etzebeth
    20. Kolisi
    21. du Preez
    22. Steyn
    23. Engelbrecht

However, I have a sneaking suspicion that Meyer is going to really surprise us this week just like he did last week.

  • @Butchie34 (Comment 1) : Agreed……Bakkies, Fourie and Steenkamp should not be in the squad……they are past it and we have better youngsters
