Five Sharks in Bok contract group

Good news today – at least from the point of view of Springbok continuity – is that the South African Rugby Union has managed to tie 10 key Springboks down with long-term contracts that will see them unable to leave the South African game until the end of 2015.

With a huge amount of focus currently on the number of ex-pat Boks selected by coach Heyneke Meyer, it’s encouraging to see that SARU is taking whatever steps they can to prevent any further top players opting to play their non-test rugby overseas. The Union has been at pains to point out the new contracts clearly stipulate that the players in question may not take up contracts with foreign clubs while they are in force.

Five Sharks players are among the contracted group, with Bismarck du Plessis, Jannie du Plessis, Willem Alberts, Beast Mtawarira and Frans Steyn all benefiting – this news is also a huge boost to the Sharks, as it means that there is no need to worry about any further big-money French or Japanese offers for these players, at least not for the next two seasons. Other “Shark Boks” like Patrick Lambie, Marcell Coetzee and Pieter-Steph du Toit clearly haven’t managed to convince coach Heyneke Meyer that the fall into this “must have” category just yet.

Aside from the five Sharks, there are four WP players, one Cheetah and no Bulls or Lions in the group of 10.

The full contracted group is: Willem Alberts (Sharks), Jean de Villiers (WP), Bismarck du Plessis (Sharks), Jannie du Plessis (Sharks), Eben Etzebeth (WP), Siya Kolisi (WP), Tendai Mtawarira (Sharks), Frans Steyn (Sharks), Adriaan Strauss (Cheetahs) and Duane Vermeulen (WP).

  • Interesting… I guess it gives a clear indication of who Meyer sees as his core players going forward. Also indicates where there are positions up for grabs and not yet decided (eg. No 5 Lock, back-up Flyhalf and possibly outside Centre)

    Sheldon,

Explain to me how it is youโ€™re trying to compare the contracting of flyhalves and opensiders?

Kolisi is 22 years old and already has 8 Bok caps. He plays the game very much like Flouw, the incumbent, and, by all accounts, works incredibly hard and has a great attitude. He will be the Bok opensider in a few years and will become a legend, injuries notwithstanding.

Who would be the second opensider you would contract? Especially considering Flouw has made his choice and it is to stay up north. Would you rather risk both the incumbent and the future plying their trade up north? Or would you learn from your mistake and make sure the future doesnโ€™t follow the past in going abroad?

Also, Iโ€™m curious โ€“ who are these mystery-men opensiders that are supposedly so much better than Kolisi? And are they still 22?

  • @SheldonK (Comment 18) : There’s no point in contracting someone unless Meyer’s certain they are his No1 or No2 back-up player.

Meyer is obviously comfortable that Kolisi is his back-up for Flo… in the same way he isn’t yet certain whether Lambie is his back-up for Steyn.

The list isn’t complete yet either… as Meyer gets closer to his final 25 or 30 players I’m sure we’ll see more contracts being offered.

  • @VinChainSaw (Comment 19) : @CS (Comment 20) : I never said Kolisi is not a good player BUT he has not played a 1 full game for the Boks yet if i am correct. He is injury prone. So all im saying is fair enough if HM is backing him to the full but at least play him then. And by giving him this contract the possibility of Coetzee leaving for pastures new is not that far fetched. So its not about blindsiders its about picking 10 players. And I would think that lambie having been part of the team for longer would have got a spot or at least Goosen who HM has publicly said is his preferred flyhalf. The same applies with Serfontein. So yes i believe Kolisi is good enough to be in the Bok squad, but Top 10 im not sure he is right now. Put it this way- if he wasnt part of the 10 would be all be asking why not?? i dont think so

Coetzee is in the squad so he has to be considered to be in the mix. And lets not forget HM picked Coetzee before he picked Kolisi. So as a Sharks fan im saying that Coetzee could well pack his bags as HM has now publicly pretty much said Coetzee isnt going to the World Cup. @West Indies Cricket Board (Comment 26) : I never said Kolisi isnt good. So there obviously won’t be contracts for:
    Flo
    DuPreez
    Pienaar
    Steyn
    Fourie
    Habana
    JPP
    Kirschner

That’s an extra 8 right there. So we’re now at 18 out of 25 for Meyer’s core World Cup group…

and we’ve discussed that there are certain positions where he’s still experimenting… so expect more contracts after the EOYT

But before kolisi can be our next openside flanker he must maybe first start playing at openside again….at the moment he plays blindside at WP with D Fourie at 6, even for bokke he comes on for alberts.

  • @VinChainSaw (Comment 19) :

Quite correct, the Kolisi deal is two-fold. One he is certain (as the rest of these 10 guys) to go to RWC 2015 unless a serious injury or complete loss of form comes somewhere along the line.

Two, while some other players central to the RWC campaign is currently overseas (where we cannot manage them) those still in SA are being kept in SA. The idea is also to reward those guys that stay here so if you want to ‘compare’ Kolisi to other players, only do so against guys still in SA.

There is a lot more going on just from what you see above, SARPA is heavily involved, existing contracts players have with their unions play a huge part, the type of contract offered (there are different categories). Although Meyer would love to contract 20 players for 2 years it is simply not financially possible.

You just have to laugh ,finding yourself defending a player from your own province ,coming under scrutiny. That’s irony, especially in light of how you have conducted yourself on other threads.

Surely ,in that group ,we had enough loose forwards and not enough back line players?

Personally I would rather have Kolisi than Duane there, but given Duane’s experience and form one could hardly debate his selection? Between Kolisi and Duane who would you rather see contracted?

It was also my understanding that the 2 year contracts were being offered to those players that were in hot demand on the Euro radar.
I cant believe Jannie, Kolisi, or Strauss are in that high demand overseas. Particularly Kolisi though. I haven’t heard any rumblings of Euro teams having a go for him.

The other 10 on 1 year contracts will be the likes of PSDT, Lambie, Coetzee, Arno, etc etc.

Oh and since when has the fact that Saru sit down and discuss things in detail mean that they make the correct decisions?
If that we’re the case, Jorrie Muller would never have been a bok and PDv would never have been coach. And there would not be a need for blogs such as this to discuss these decisions because we would all be in a agreement. Take the blinkers off and emotion out and perhaps we can have a proper discussion.

  • @John Galt (Comment 97) :

There’s a concept called Information Assymetry. Look it up – there are some interesting studies.

Anyway – do you really think that you, sitting at home running your mouth off on the internet and watching a few games here and there, have more or less information than what is available to the hundreds of people employed at SARU to analyse and make decisions on whom to contract? That was why I asked if you had some inside information.

I mean, you seem to have a rpetty strong opinion. So strong that it makes me wonder when last you spoke to the player in question. Because I imagine HM speaks to him every day? And I imagine that the technical guys are able to tell you every step he has taken on a rugby field over the last couple of years. And the dieticians every morsel he had eaten of late; the personal trainer how much weight he can lift, the fitness trainer his bleep test scores.

Or the players agent agent, who perhaps has given SARU the iron-clad guarantees they needed, perhaps they werent able to get it from another player you feel was more deserving?

Or perhaps the physio, team doctor, physchologist, all of whom might have an opinion on the player.

What about the coaches – i mean, there are several of them.

All I’m demonstrating is that there are a myriad of reasons a player was offered a contract above another, and you are privy to exactly zero information that doesnt come through the media.

There were good reasons for Jorrie – they were political reasons.
As for PDivvy, you might not like him, but his record was as good, if not better, than blue-eyed boy Jake White.
He did beat the ABs three times on the trot, beat the B&I Lions and win the Rugby Championship.

But then that doesnt matter, because he said some silly things on camera?

Blue eyed boy Jake White did not play against the Lions so could not have done better than PDiwy there. Jake won the Tri Nations as well in case you forgot, then the biggy Jake won the World Cup, also I assume slipped your mind. And then overall Jake had a 67% win ratio while PDiwy had a 62& win ratio. Only Mallet and Kitch had better ratio’s than Jake.

Flip not as bad as everybody think, adds a lot at scrums and mauls with his extra weight. Think coetzee will cover 6; kolisi and A botha 7; and A botha and spies 8

It’s fun having you here. I enjoy a good difference of opinion.

Here’s my opinion. I’m happy with Kolisi’s contract, I think he and Marcelle are very much on par as far as talent, potential and form since arriving on the scene. Clearly HM prefers Kolisi at this moment and I can’t really fault him for it, as a Sharks supporter, would I have liked to see Marcelle prosper ahead of a WP boy, maybe, but honestly, with the type of talent both these players have, we should be so lucky that one of them has been offered a contract and only hope that Heyneke will offer Marcelle one as well.

And Lambie is still the best! ๐Ÿ™‚

  • I would also like to see a couple of the backs offered a contract. I just don’t think HM has settled on who will feature most prominently in his plans for the WC in the back line and so many of the ones he would like to settled on has left SA already.

I do think Lambie, Willie and maybe even Jan and JJ should maybe in the mix for the back line. Lambie has been in the mix for a while and if not the 10 back-up then will still cover the bench for both 15 and 10. Jan is clearly the preferred 12 after Jean, although it does seem that Steyn will take this spot when he’s fit. I just feel it’s good to invest in a young player if you feel he will potentially take over. Maybe Jan is pushing it, but JJ who has been our only decent 13 this year and Willie in his starts this season has been exceptional as an attacker and has been improving in other areas, should surely also be offered a longer term contract at some point.

  • Also if you were going to nit pick and there was only the option to pick 10 players for this 2 year contract, is it really best to pick your back-up hooker and a back-up loosie (unless of course HM is sending a message to overseas players, ie Flouw, that local players will be preferred, then I’m on board).

If you dropped strauss from that list – I know, a little harsh considering how he performed and the fact that he’s the vice-captain when he is playing, but if you do take him of the list, you can make room for another back, like Willie or Lambie, or JJ or Jan, whoever is most important to your 2 year plans.

  • Sry strauss is far more imported than lambie, jan or jj….jdv is our 12 and captain for worldcup, but he is not young and injury prone even though he is playing well at the moment, but if he’s out before the worldcup it will be steyn and not jan that comes in.

True, true … that’s what happens when you don’t consider the situation properly before typing.

It would have been nice if Willie could have been thrown into the mix though, but it does not seem as though HM is quite sure about him just yet. I suppose it’s very early to give any of Jan, Willie or JJ 2 year contracts.

Like I set, it seems that most of our settled backs seems to have already left for Europe/Japan.

It’s just tough to see that we only have 2 guys contracted in the backs and they usually both prefer playing 12.

  • Lambie, jan and jj probably won’t be in the starting lineup come 2015. Strauss and fsteyn probably also not, but bosvark/strauss comes as a unit and we definitely need cover for jdv and a 100kg senter with exp of NH conditions is perfect, plus his long range kicks. Goosen will give lambie a run for the backup 10jersey and the 15jersey is wide open with lambie,willie,taute,fsteyn…..
