Lambie starts at 10 for Boks

Pat Lambie will play flyhalf when the Springboks take on Scotland at Murrayfield on Sunday.

With regular flyhalf Morne Steyn rated as touch and go for even a bench spot, Lambie shifts into the hot seat from the fullback position he occupied last week, with Willie le Roux restored to the last line of defence. It will be le Roux’s first start at fullback in some months, after playing out most of the Rugby Championship at right wing. JP Pietersen, restored to his favoured number 14 jersey, earns a 50th test cap this week.

Changes up-front see Gurthro Steenkamp, Adriaan Strauss and Bakkies Botha all come in for starts. Somewhat surprisingly, the last-named has forced Pieter-Steph du Toit out of the squad entirely, which is a bit of an abrupt departure from the midweek talk that he may start. Eben Etzebeth joins fellow first-team regulars in Bismarck du Plessis and Beast Mtawarira on the wood.

An injury concern sees Siya Kolisi bracketed with Willem Alberts at closed-side flank; should the latter be passed fit, though, Kolisi will miss out entirely, with Marcell Coetzee guaranteed the number 19 jersey either way.

Steyn will have to face a late fitness test too, before taking his place on the bench. No replacement has yet been named in case he is forced to cry off.

The Springbok team to face Scotland in Edinburgh is:

15. Willie le Roux 10 caps 15 points
14. JP Pietersen 49 caps 70 points
13. Jaque Fourie 70 caps 160 points
12. Jean de Villiers (captain) 94 caps 125 points
11. Bryan Habana 93 caps 265 points
10. Pat Lambie 30 caps 57 points
9. Fourie du Preez 66 caps 75 points
8. Duane Vermeulen 14 caps 5 points
7. Willem Alberts 28 caps 30 points/Siya Kolisi 9 caps 0 points
6. Francois Louw 26 caps 25 points
5. Flip van der Merwe 32 caps 5 points
4. Bakkies Botha 76 caps 35 points
3. Frans Malberhe 1 caps 0 points
2. Adriaan Strauss (vice-captain) 31 caps 25 points
1. GurthrΓΆ Steenkamp 47 caps 30 points
16. Bismarck du Plessis 55 caps 45 points
17. Tendai Mtawarira 51 caps 10 points
18. Coenie Oosthuizen 12 caps 5 points
19. Eben Etzebeth 22 caps 0 points
20. Marcell Coetzee 14 caps 5 points
21. Ruan Pienaar 72 caps 130 points
22. MornΓ© Steyn 52 caps 627 points/AN Other
23. JJ Engelbrecht 11 caps 20 points

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 1) :

Very peculiar for me. And Marcele on the bench, but Alberts to be subbed by Kolisi if Alberts doesn’t pass a fitness test.

And Steyn still to pass fitness test, but nothing about his probable replacement, if not Goosen, then I suppose Ruan will have to fill that gap one more time.

Lets hope Lambie doesn’t get injured, but more important, lets hope he has the game of his life. He’s playing with a solid backline and a strong pack, if they can dominate and give clean ball to him and he can click with Jean and the other backs (permitting Fourie du Preeze gives him the freedom to play), he should be able to impress. Not all his critics, but maybe those who matter.

  • So in the easiest test of the year: Kolisi who has a contract may not play. PSDT doesnt get a run. Serfontein,Goosen and Aplon not even mentioned. Do Ntubeni and Schreuder have to pay for their match tickets? Hyneke Meyer is taking no chances with his win/loss record this year. Rotation and depth will have to wait.

However PSDT has already been capped, and I think should have been on the bench instead of Eben. Etzebeth looks a bit over-played and could do with a rest.

It’s hard not to be baffled by the exclusion of PSDT though. When are you going to give him gametime if not against the Scots? The incoming tours. I was so hoping to see Eben and Psdt in a combo at the end of the year. Don’t know when that will happen now?

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 10) : No look it was a joke bout Ntubeni and Schreuder as they were never going to play. I just wonder if they wasted money on a Bok blazer for them. By the sounds of it if Alberts is fit then Kolisi drops out the 22. And if Steyn not fit I assume Serfontein or Goosen will come onto the bench. The scare against the Scots in SA in June has made HM double think his idea of rotating in players.

  • @ChrisS (Comment 14) : The Adriaanse selection is very puzzling. Maybe Hyneke picks him for emergency cover only. As for a guy like Aplon and Kirchner who are capped Boks, if he wasnt going to play them against the easiest opposition then he should have rather picked younger players who could just be there for site seeing.

  • Comment 23, posted at 14.11.13 14:58:28 by SheldonK Reply

  • @ChrisS (Comment 14) : I agree on Adriaanse PSDT and possibly Jan, but Aplon is only their in case of an injury. He’s not in HM’s future plans, no use playing him when Willie needs game time to settle at 15 and improve on some things in his game.

Jan should get an extended run of the becnh if the Boks can put distance between them and the scots on the scoreboard early on. I’m glad Jean is starting though, because I wanted to see Lambie with the first choice backs.

And unless HM doesn’t rate Psdt, which he has said that he does, I don’t get his complete exclusion from the match 23. Eben could have been given a rest, for that matter, Flip really din’t need to start. He’s had plenty of games for the Boks, we know what we have in him by now.

I would also have started Coenie at 1, but clearly HM is going to persist with this tighthead experiment, which is ruining the player for his best position. HM is not even willing to back the guy for a start against the Scots. How well is the experiment of 2 years going, if you can’t trust the guy to start against the Scots over a 22 year old 1 cap player?

  • So if Lambie plays well it’s because he is just soooo gooood.

BUT, if he doesn’t it’s Heyneke’s fault for not coaching him properly, or the wrong gameplan. Or FdP not doing whatever it is that he is supposed to be doing to make Lambie look good. Or the wind blowing too strong or in the wrong direction. Or the rain. Or the turf cutting up. πŸ™„

No, no, no! Wait a minute. This is what HM did with Ntubeni and Schroeder, maybe to a lesser extent, because he actually believes these guys could step up later on, but just selecting players, for selecting them? I don’t believe in that. If Willie got injured, then Aplon or Zane would have stepped up. They are both more than adequate cover and if you are not going to use someone, it might as well be Zane.

  • HM is just looking to see how fit Bakkies is.

To be fair – ive watched some of his French games and he has been immense. Definiteyl good enough for another WC.

Sad not seeing PSdT, but his time will come.

As for Lambie – poor guy. He’s in a lose-lose situation.
If he doesnt perform he’ll get crucified; if he does, then he’ll get criticised for only stepping up against the weaker sides.

HM is clearly a stats man and wants to go down in history as the most successful Bok coach ever. Given the way the media continually compares his win/loss ratio to that of his predecessors, its quite obvious his plan is play the guys until they break and only then make a change.

He has zero long-term interest in the side, most likely because he knows there’s a very good chance he’s gone after the WC anyway.
There’s no incentive to blood players and look at the long-term picture.

No if Lambie is not good against the Scots it will be because there was too much pressure on him to perform and because HM didn’t select Psdt and because Jean is too old and is probably insecure about playing next to a 23 year old, and because HM selected 5 Bulls with Lambie (4 of which who play in Europe now) and because not even Lambie can make two Japenese imports look good.

Oh and just because Lambie is always awesome and everyone around him is made week by his awesomeness and thus cannot live up to his standard.

Oh and most importantly if Lambie is not good against the Scots it will be everyone and everything else’s fault except his, just because it could annoy you a little.

See you after the game. πŸ™‚

You should have named at least one more guy not previously a Bull.

Habana has been awesome recently and Fourie is all we have. Flip is good back-up to the Future best lock combo.

But Bakkies is clearly not a good mentor, taking Psdt’s moment to shine.

Zane, well I never rated him and since we now have Willie and Taute should be back from injury next year and Lambie can still do a job there, his name should never be associated with Sprinbok rugby again. Poor guy, but that’s just how I feel. Never rated him.

Jacque Fourie was the best at some point, but I feel for this game it was important to give JJ another go. What did he do wrong during the RC? He had some brilliant touches. He’s a young player with huge pace and he can be used on either centre or wing.

I don’t know why HM isn’t willing to shape the raw talent we have.

I always rated Jacque, but I feel his return will only slow down the growth of JJ or whoever was earmarked to be the next 13 for the boks.

What about Guthro? What’s the point of that? We don’t have any goode looseheads in SA?

Still just happy Lambie is getting another shot!

  • At the end of the day lets look at this test match in isolation becuase thats what it is. Its a once off test match against Scotland at Murrayfield. HM has selected a very good side. We have a big strong pack and an experienced backline. There is also a good bench to close out the game. So in terms of HM picking a side to win a test match i dont think anyone can fault him on that.

  • Just hope the Brave-hearts are made from stronger material than the Welsh. The rate at which the Boks were sending them off the field was pretty frightening.

The Scots are pretty fortunate they are not getting Bakkies and Bismarck at the same time.

  • I’m tired of seeing weak bok teams when we play weak teams. This is a good team, let’s give skotland a hiding. U don’t rest players at test level. There’s no free ride, u wanna play for the boks….be the best!!! U really wonna play skapie next to jan? That would be silly! Jdv and fourie needs more game time before france! Bakkies need to show the world what he’s got and can’t still worry about psdt. Malherbe needs a strong pack to show what he’s got. HM knows theres a lot of. pressure on some of these guys and he can’t just give everyone a go, that would be madness. Willie needs to prove himself still at 15. Fourie at 13. Can’t just put these guys next to youngsters. U must give them a fair chance…

“Willem doesn’t always get the credit he deserves. Our team hands out the award for the biggest hit after a game, and this year he’s won that award in every game bar one. He puts in the most hits, he puts his body on the line, and that’s why he occasionally gets injured. It’s the way he plays.” – HM

    1. JP (I included him since this will be his 50th)
    2. Bakkies
    3. Bismarck

Also with above 70% wins are Jannie, Frans, Jaque, FDP, Beast.

    Interesting stuff!

He also played some tests during the dire Springbok era in the early 2000s. Shows what an impact he can make!

U wonna see if fourie still got it, put him outside Jdv. U wonna see if lambie got it, put him behind a strong pack and in a exp backline. Yes we all wonna see psdt, but u can’t play a new TH and a new nr5 at the same time…..right now finding a new nr3 is more imported than a new nr5 lock….to see if bakkies got it play him in a strong lineup…..HM is not the only coach there and they working to a plan. • @McLovin (Comment 107) : What??? 😯

The reasoning is beyond bizarre. According to Meyer he can’t play PSdT and Bakkies together because: “If I picked Pieter-Steph alongside Bakkies then we would effectively have two newcomers. I also felt I needed an experienced player who could replace Bakkies later in the game.”

Really? So a RWC, Super Rugby, Heineken Cup and Currie Cup winning lock isn’t experienced enough to guide a youngster like Pieter-Steph? By Meyer’s reckoning he is also not professional enough to slot into the current Bok setup AND have PSdT as his understudy?

    Totale. Fokken. Bullshit.

Flip and Bakkies are exactly the same kinds of locks and Eben will come on for more of the same. Why not give Flip a rest?

If we win the next 2 tests which I think we will (although France could be difficult) then I believe this will be the Boks 3rd best season EVER.

We’ve only lost to NZ who according to SFP is the best ever All Black side, so that’s no big deal!

Just look how much we’ve improved from last season, if we keep improving and hopefully beat the AB’s next season at least at home, then we will be a great side going into the World Cup. And our semi final clash against the All Blacks in 2015 should be an absolute cracker with us having every chance of winning it!!! πŸ˜€
