I have always used a Phone for Sharks world and Its one of the best websites to view on my phone as its just so simple and clean, actually prefer phone to PC for SW as there are no ads.
They only problem I have ever come across on Nokia (current phone) Iphone and Blackberry, is many of the links that are not articles just come up with blank pages, For example “Currie cup Fixtures and log 2013” Is just a blank article. This is not the case for all of them as “Currie cup Fixtures & Results 2011” Does actually have the full fixtures and results.
An app would be really nice is if that’s even an idea of yours, also Polls are awesome and should be used a lot more 😀 a comparison I would make is I use http://www.nufcblog.com/ just as much as I use Sharks world, and their use of polls adds a lot of interaction. 🙂

Wouldn’t it be easier to change to a more responsive theme, rather than build an app from scratch?

On a serious note, though. About 6 months ago I also decided to teach myself JS so downloaded SDK 6, Eclipse and also Netbeans. I started with the Oracle tutorials and also others I found on Youtube and the net, but somehow it didn’t “click” in my head.
Then I Googled “The easiest way to develop Android Apps” and got to Google App Inventor. I played around with it for a day or so and it helped me a lot to visualise the logic behind scripting, how variables work, etc.
I still find learning JS a huge challenge, but GAI changed the way I understand the subject matter. I don’t know how difficult you find it – to me it made a big difference seeing in graphical terms how an App is put together.

It allows you to dev in .Net and deploy to Android and iOS. Very cool. Obviously there are some platform differences at the UI and OS level but if you don’t need to access OS functionality (which seems to be the case) then you only have to duplicate effort at the UI level.

Bring on the 2014 rugby season…
@robdylan Thanks Rob that squad sure as heck does not seem right. Rugby365 joining News24 in posting crap it seems lol
@Franshark (Comment 48) : amen!
@sharks_lover (Comment 49) : it’s on the Sarries site as well
@sharks_lover (Comment 49) : Everitt just confirmed it’s wrong. Sharks haven’t finalised their squad yet.
@robdylan (Comment 52) : lol thanks boet, thought so. Guess Sarries webmonster got caught out too.
@robdylan (Comment 31) : It’ll either be on the ipad or my wife’s andriod
@sharks_lover (Comment 53) : actually the other way round, I think. Sarries seem to be the source of that
Hey rob … just some comments. I browse pretty much exclusively on an android phone and I use the chrome browser. I tend to avoid apps because of high data usage. The ones I do use tend to be quite upmarket eg espn cricinfo app. I prefer the m.domain.com sites over an app
Nokia 3210…
@VinChainSaw (Comment 57) : At least you don’t own a Motorola 😉
@byron (Comment 56) : Well made apps with few visuals should use any more data then a mobile site, the only time something like a Sharks world app would have a constant data usage is if it has a auto updating widget or something similar, which I highly doubt Rob will be including, although that would actually be nice 🙂
@Seth101 (Comment 59) : can’t please everyone.
I’m trying to design the thing to be as “light” on data as possible
@robdylan (Comment 60) : Searching Play Store on my tablet, the only Sharks app I can find is the Sharkie game app with 55000+ downloads. So you will be putting out the first and only Sharks news app.
Wouldn’t it be easier to change to a more responsive theme, rather than build an app from scratch?
Info: If I’m watching rugby I use Asus Memopad, unless my wife’s got it – then it’s S3. Hate typing on the Samsung, though. Any other time on my Acer work laptop.
@rhineshark (Comment 62) : what do you mean by “more responsive theme”?
@robdylan (Comment 63) : Rob I check for updates about 70 times a day on my Samsung F480, but if I need to reply to a post like now I use my wifes Blackberry or go online on the home PC. Must say I really don’t have any complaints with regards to the mobi site as I use it to get info on the Sharks and not for apps and gadgets. Thanx for all the time and effort you guys put into Sharksworld!!!!!
@robdylan (Comment 63) : Some WP themes are developed to be phone and tablet friendly out of the box. Every time I come across one it’s called a “responsive” theme. Don’t know why.
Rob I use the android SW App on my Samsung 4 and you may remember me enquiring when I had a problem to log in to join a discussion. It seems you guys addressed it and it works great now. Thanks!
@Seth101 (Comment 9) : 😆 Yip, Same here. Ironically, you can’t use a phone to vote and say you are using a phone. 🙂
I have a Nokia Experia which I use for everything plus its waterproof therefore farmproof!
@Caratacus (Comment 68) : Sony Xperia maybe? 😉
@KSA Shark © (Comment 67) : ja – stupid poll plugin I’m using generates some sort of weird HTML that mobile browsers don’t seem to like. Sigh.
I guess that’s skewing the poll quite horribly. I guess I can check the web server logs, though.
I use phone, tablet and pc; whatever device Im on.
@robdylan (Comment 16) : I am on an s4 and z10, so would be looking forward the app, but will most likely just port it to the z10 as i have to return my s4 since im planning on leaving my current company and am searching for a new one.
Rob you planning on going the Java with Eclipse as IDE route for the Android app?
@vanmartin (Comment 72) : yup
@robdylan (Comment 73) : Have you tried Google App Inventor? Seems a pretty instinctive developer interface. Not sure how advanced it is though.
@rhineshark (Comment 74) : as with most things I do here, I’m using this as an opportunity to learn a new skill.
@robdylan (Comment 73) : Shout if you’d be interested in some help on the project. I’ve been looking for an excuse to develop an Android app for ages.
@vanmartin (Comment 76) : aaah – good man! I might just do that 🙂
@robdylan (Comment 75) : Aah, so not to offer Sharksworld users a smooth and hassle-free mobile blogging experience? 😛 😈
At my old job I had time to comment – then I used computer. Current job equals crazy busy, consequently I only have time for a quick read on the phone..
@rhineshark (Comment 78) : well, that too, of course!
@robdylan (Comment 80) : I know. 😀
On a serious note, though.
@robdylan (Comment 77) : I’d be happy to help where I can so let me know what you decide. Do keep in mind (although you’re no doubt aware of this) that a code repository like GitHub or similar pretty much becomes a requirement at that point.
Blackberry!
SW users not too bright apparently. 19% Blackberry??? 😯
@robdylan (Comment 16) : Are you aware of Mono?
@robdylan (Comment 15) : Check this out.
http://xamarin.com/
It allows you to dev in .Net and deploy to Android and iOS. Very cool. Obviously there are some platform differences at the UI and OS level but if you don’t need to access OS functionality (which seems to be the case) then you only have to duplicate effort at the UI level.
@klempie (Comment 85) : no? Enlighten me?
@klempie (Comment 86) : if you can find something that works the other way round – i.e. allows me to write in Java, but deploy to iOS and Windows, that would be just gravy
@robdylan (Comment 88) : Don’t know how legit this is, but it may be what could help, http://www.codenameone.com/
@robdylan (Comment 88) : Java?? Pah. Anyway, don’t know what you mean by “other way around”. Are you saying you want to go from Android to Windows Phone and iOS?
@robdylan (Comment 87) : In short, Mono is open source implementation of .Net. Xamarin are the commercial supporters thereof.
@Seth101 (Comment 89) : I like the look of that…. sounds like a bunch of Saffers came up with it, based on the accents.
The two founders are from Israel according to google.
@Seth101 (Comment 93) : oh right, ok.
The guy narrating the video had a very distinct “Joburg Jewish” kind of accent. To me, anyway, but what do I know? 🙂
sharksworld app coming soom
