Sharks named for Sarries

The Sharks have named their touring squad to face Saracens in London on 25 January.

Patrick Lambie is the surprise exclusion from the 26-man squad named by Jake White earlier today – we assume he’s been given the time off due to his impending wedding to fiancee Kate. Tim Swiel and Currie Cup sensation Fred Zeilinga are the men most likely to operate at flyhalf in a young backline that also includes up-and-comers in Jaco van Tonder and Heimar Williams.

There have been some forward “casualties” from the Currie Cup season too; Wiehahn Herbst and Peet Marais miss out up front, while Jacques Botes’ name is also nowhere to be found. Stephan Lewies and new boy Etienne Oosthuizen complete a very young second row contingent with recent Bok Pieter-Steph du Toit, while it’s good to see Tera Mtembu feature among the loose forward options.

Andre Esterhuizen and Tyler Fisher, the young centre pair that impressed for the Sharks under 21 side last year, will both travel, as will a fit-again Paul Jordaan in a squad that doesn’t lack for midfield options.

Altogether, 13 capped Springboks have made the side.

Forwards:
Tendai Mtawarira, Dale Chadwick, Lourens Adriaanse, Jannie du Plessis, Bismarck du Plessis, Kyle Cooper, Pieter-Steph du Toit, Stephan Lewies, Etienne Oosthuizen, Willem Alberts, Marcell Coetzee, Keegan Daniel, Jean Deysel, Tera Mtembu.

Backs: Charl McLeod, Cobus Reinach, Timothy Swiel, Fred Zeilinga, Francois Steyn, Heimar Williams, Andre Esterhuizen, Tyler Fisher, Paul Jordaan, Lwazi Mvovo, Odwa Ndungane, Jaco van Tonder.

  • Hmm very interesting. Very young lock combo, altho PSDT may end up at flank as not much cover there. Swiel to play 10 with Steyn to cover 10 im guessing as nobody else. So Ndungane and Van Tonder to cover 15. Interesting ommissions wud be Herst, Marais, Coetzee,Botes, Downey, Lambie, Zeilinga, SP Marais

@pierre_mackie (Comment 4) : Indeed. We should be able to get some good forward momentum and set pieces with our forwards. Very interested in seeing what our young and promising backline can do with that.

  • It is going to be very interesting to see who he will pick in the midfield. Heimar Williams realy impressed me last year. Fischer had a huge season last year with the U21 team. Paul Jordaan has the pace….and we have Fransie and the big Esterhuizen. I am like a small kid on Christmas Eve ahead of this season. And we have Marco Wentzel and Peet Marais to fall back on at lock with Bresler also available later. JP Pietersen also to bolster this squad.

  • What is the collective S15 game time of the three locks , lewies 0 ( I think he is overrated) Etienne ( 3 games, we will see), PSDT ( nr of S15 games? He is great anyway, might end up being a no 7) Everybody hailed Peet Marais ( He is a good player and prospect (Will he join his brother if he is not in the mix ?) Marco and Hewitt sent to Vodacom Cup ( they both have experience) Bresler great player but has not played for a year and had four shoulder ops ? Last year the sharks lost 6 locks during the year to injury ? On rotation most guys will probably end up playing? Jake promised that all players in his S15 squad will get the opportunity to prove themselves, what about Justin, Tim, Marco , Hewitt that have been dropped to the Vodacom Cup squad ? ( who else have been dropped?) There will certainly be some unhappiness and as history has shown us some players will leave. We get the locks, chose them, drop them and then they leave. Jake however has the experience and we must trust his selections. GO Sharks!!

We have to acknowledge that changing head coach twice in under 6 months is not great in terms of continuity – obviously each coach will have guys he rates and doesn’t rate. Simple fact is you just cannot pick everyone.

I’m quite sure guys like Peet, Fred and Wors are still very much in the picture. Maybe Jake just wants to see how the others go?

I am very excited at the potential a backline of Charl, Tim,Mvovo, Heimar, Paul,Tyler and Jaco can have. Although I think a more probable SupeRugby starting backline would more probably be Charl, Pat, Mvovo, Frans, Tim/Paul, JPP, Odwa/Jaco/SP

Only thing is I don’t know how he is off the field as captain. After reading John Smits autobiography I can now appreciate that been a captain is far more than just what we normally see and hear about. How a captain handles the team off the field seems to be the difference between a good captain and a great one.

We also need a real old school no 4 lock who is able to bully ghe oposition.

Lastly a defensive deamon at 13 … jordans a bit light but love the pace out wide…

  • @byron (Comment 76) : Chadwick is a handy enough back-up to Beast. There are a number of options at 4……..PSDT, Peet Marais, Oosthuizen and Bresler………..there are plenty of options at 13………Whitehead, Jordaan, Williams, Fisher and Esterhuizen

  • So Lambie has been excluded from selection for VERY obvious reasons. Coach knows, keep your players happy, but keep the wives of your players even happier. 😉

  • This tour is the perfect chance to give the new players and players returning from injury a chance to show what they have amongst some seasoned pros. So the result really isnt important altho i kno JW believes winning is a habit. Im more interested to see how the Sharks will play this year- im guessing it will largely be forward orientated but i think our backline may surprise a bit. Stefan Lewies impressed in CC but im not sure he has the bulk for super rugby but time will tell

  • @robdylan (Comment 81) : When you know what the Vodacom cup side is, please could you do an article on them so that we know who is playing where. It’s interesting to see who JW rates and doesn’t rate. Thanks, Rob!

  • @robdylan (Comment 78) : I also wonder how good this guy is actually. Obviously highly rated by JW, but then again JW did pick Jaco vdW as his no10 when he took over the boks…

My thought is he must be doing something good to move after white at the Brumbies and then sharks. Would be wonderful if he can establish himself with PDT as SA’s no1 pair locks 😀

  • @ChrisS (Comment 86) : I am sad that Tim s not in the S15 squad, I rate him very highly, Yes ha hasn’t show the same promise since his injury, but he was one of the reasons we made the S15 final two years ago, he created some serious space for Paul to unwind his feet. To see him play Vodacom Cup is really sad.

  • @Uli Boelie (Comment 88) : Yeah it sucks to see Whitehead released to the Vodacom Cup, but there are only so many chances you can give a player who’s injury prone. On top of that Frans Steyn came back and made a huge impact in the Currie Cup final. But don’t be surprised to see Tim play Super Rugby this year. The season is long and the attrition rate is high.

  • @Saffex (Comment 83) :
Williams and Esterhuizen are out and out 12s. Just because they are centres doesn’t mean that they can automatically play 13.
They are completely different positions, offensively and in defence.

Its like saying there are plenty options at openside flank…Alberts, Deysel etc.

  • If you ask me, Odwa can really provide some value at 15 this year. His experience is huge while the other fullbacks are a little too green.

  • @Grasshopper (Comment 21) : Zeillinga is there in the touring squad on the Sharks webiste. And yes, he is a bit small for Super Rugby, but as long as his tackle technique is good (like Lambie’s) it shouldn’t be a problem. He had a great Currie Cup but in all fairness he did wobble a bit when the semi-final pressure cracked on. Hopefully he can learn under Lambie to keep a cool head.

  • Sarries is a bloody good side with half a season behind them. Historically we have tended to struggle in these warmup games, so I hope this little trip to Southampton doesn’t turn into a nightmare.
