Bismarck du Plessis takes Sharks reigns

Bismarck du Plessis will captain the Sharks in 2014.

This news was confirmed earlier this morning via the Sharks official Twitter account.

No further information has yet been released as to the rationale behind the decision, however, one can read between the lines to an extent. The fact that Bismarck is an automatic selection in his position as a seasoned Springbok (and best hooker in the world) ticks one of the most vital boxes of all for Jake White. You simply cannot end up in a situation where you are making compromises in order to pick your captain.

Well done, Bismarck and best of luck for the season to come.

A further tweet has announced that three players will share the vice-captaincy role; veterans Jean Deysel and Odwa Ndungane and relative youngster Patrick Lambie.

  • Good decision for the season, but in the long run it would have been nice to see a young captain, like with John Smit (not that I have anyone in mind).

  • This will hopefully lead to Bissie watching his discipline more. And hopefully it will also lead to him taking over the captaincy of the Boks in the long term. Question is, who is going to be vice captain? If it was up to me I would make Lambie vc.

  • @woody (Comment 44) : what makes you say that? do you think the same of botes? here is an example. for me odwa plays a similar role that botes does for the pack. he has been around and makes the right decisions you know what you are gonna get and in tough games he is very important. now people say a wings primary function is to score tries and for the position botes plays his primary function is to steal ball so ask yourself how often does he actually do that? our game plan the last few years hasnt helped and you just have to look at mvovo or jp to see my point. both extremly quick and good finishers both not really doing much better then mvovo in terms of tries scored

  • You cannot compare odwa to botes because botes hasn’t lost anything that he had before whereas odwa has. You cannot say that odwa makes the right decisions. Watch his games of 2013 and count how many times tries have been scored against us directly because of his bad defensive decisions like coming out of line at the wrong time for example

Still think that Keegan should start though. In my opinion the best loose trio we’ve had in the last few years has been:
    6 Keegan
    7 Willem
    8 Kanko

Having Keegan and Kanko running off the likes Beast, Bismark, PSDT, Willem etc will be a helluva thing.

I don’t believe he is of much use as a winger anymore, from what I saw of him in the Super season last year he was exposed badly by the New Zealand outside centres who had the gas on him. At 15 he as more time to get his positioning right.

I think coaching at 15 shall make him a great asset still. We are going to need about 50 players to get through the year’s games and we need to have them skilled and rotated sensibly.

  • Bismarck has to much dogfcuk to be captain in my opinion, we don’t want him to lose his edge.

The way Daniels played last year who can say he really deserves a place in that starting loose trio? I have a feeling we will see this 6.Coetzee 7.Deysel 8.Alberts at some point.

  • The most exciting thing about this is I think it will go a long way towards keeping bizmark and jannie in durban for years to come.

Unofficially bismark has been the captain of the team for the last year so its the right choice.

What excited me more is the vc for dysel. Does this mean we are going to see more of him this year in super rugby?

  • @HeinF (Comment 93) : I genuinely have no idea, if I’m honest. Frans, though, has never really struck me as the captain type, despite Plum giving him the band last season
