Ackies names very new-look Lions

While all the other Super Rugby sides have already given some indication as to what their final rosters will look like for the upcoming season, the composition of the Lions squad remains a mystery. Coach Johan Ackermann has named a massive group of more than 50 players to take part in two warm-up games against the Leopards on Friday, indicating that he’s probably still some way off whittling down his group.

Friday’s exercise, one feels, is definitely about running the rule over fringe players, given that most of those considered guaranteed starters won’t play in the starting lineup for either team. Looking over the list of names, there really are a lot of unknowns sprinkled throughout both outfits, with the team named to play second arguably the stronger. Looking at the bench for that selection, you’ll find many of the Lions’ big guns (although no sign of Elton Jantjies or Franco van der Merwe) indicating that Ackermann aims to finish off the evening with his best combination on the park.

  • @The Great Couch Shark (Comment 1) : not a loss to sharks rugby. See the oke out way to often, and his love for the beer and partying must surely be an indication that rugby isn’t his first love.

Some of those names even surprise me …. Most of the players from the 1st team will apparently be playing Vodacom Cup .

  • Nothing stand out about that squad, but do rate Ackers as a coach, aswell as Stonehouse of the Pumas.

  • Not much quality there.

Stokkies Hanekom is a class centre, reminds me of Fourie in his better days

    Mapoe is good

Volmink, Jantjies, Kriel and Andries Coetzee are missing

    The Lions will struggle

  • Comment 21, posted at 21.01.14 23:57:45 by Saffex Reply

  • These two matches are mainly about giving some fringe players and youngsters a run with the Pumas players get match practice with the squad as well giving players returning from injury (Hanekom, Mostert, Muller, Hollenbach, etc.) game time.

Very much mix and match sides but with only 12 Lions players having played more than 10 SR games some of these players will have to make a step up

  • Elton Jantjies [shoulder surgery], Anthony Volmink [shoulder], Ruan Dreyer [shoulder], Ruan Combrinck [ankle], Dylan des Fountain [knee] and Chris van Zyl [knee] out injured although some may be ready at the start of the season or soon after.

Jaco Kriel, Warren Whiteley, Franco vd Merwe, Andries Coetzee, Michael Bondesio, Julian Redelinghuys, Jacques van Rooyen and Marnitz Boshoff not selected

  • @Baylion (Comment 23) : Will Jimmy Stonehouse be assisting Ackerman as coach this year, or will he mainly be with his VC team.

Personally I think the Lions will do well to get him heavily involved in coaching, though I’d imagine their budget taking a bit of strain with two top coaches. Also, imo it’s next to impossible to get two head coaches to constructively work together.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 24) : When I talked to Manie Booysen in November it wasn’t on the cards. Seems there’s still some issues between the unions at management level and hopefully that will get sorted out.

I would have like a bit of a design, similar to the new practice jerseys
