Cheetahs coach Naka Drotske has further shown his hand by selecting a near full strength side to face the Southern Kings in a Super Rugby warm-up match on Saturday.

Johan Goosen is fit again and take over at flyhalf from Elgar Watts, while Hennie Daniller keeps Willie le Roux’s fullback jersey warm; the Bok sensation will see no warm-up action ahead of the season opener against the Lions, as he nurses a shoulder injury.

Two Bulls imports, Francois Venter and Jean Cook, have forced their way into the first-choice selection, while former sharks age-group prop Maks van Dyk is on the bench.

Cheetahs to face Kings:

15 Hennie Daniller, 14 Cornal Hendricks, 13 Johann Sadie, 12 Francois Venter, 11 Raymond Rhule, 10 Johan Goosen, 9 Kevin Luiters, 8 Philip van der Walt, 7 Lappies Labuschagne, 6 Jean Cook, 5 Lood de Jager, 4 Francois Uys, 3 Coenie Oosthuizen, 2 Adriaan Strauss (c), 1 Trevor Nyakane.
Substitutes: 16 Ryno Barnes, 17 Caylib Oosthuizen, 18 Nicolaas van Dyk, 19 Ligtoring Landman, 20 Boom Prinsloo, 21 Shaun Venter, 22 Elgar Watts, 23 Rayno Benjamin.

  • @Seth101 (Comment 8) : He’ll probably break as soon as the rest of South Africa buys into the HM dream, then end up breaking again….so about 10 mins. into the first SR game? 😈

  • Should we have a Goosen sweepstakes?

Reckon there are probably about 25 games he could play this season; each punter picks a number between 1 and 25…

  • @Seth101 (Comment 13) : that would mean getting through about 27 injury-free days between now and then. That would be a new PB

  • Surprised Howard Mnisi has not made the bench, he is a far better player than the very average Benjamin.

Good side, especially once Willie returns to 15. They are short of a quality lock to partner Lood. I thought they would keep young Reinier Bernardo from the Kings, but he seems to have been cut from the squad after playing flank in the warm up game.

7’s star Hendricks on the wing is a good addition as is Luiters at 9 and Venter at 12. Cook is not a 6, strange call that…….but he is a good player.

  • @Saffex (Comment 17) : Agreed, Cook is not a 6. Uys and Lood did well in the lineouts for the Cheetahs last year, what Uys lacks in height he makes up for in his physical donkey work. With Landman on the bench, they have an able replacement.
Cheetahs like to have a fair bit of mobility in their pack which suits their game plan. Uys plays an almost hybrid role of enforcer, and additional loosie . This year we seem to have better depth at centre and wing. This should mean we will see Willie in his more familiar FB position.

  • @Saffex (Comment 17) : Mnisi played against NMMU last night, Cheetahs 29 NMMU 26

  • Cook might not be ur usual 6, but he’s a busy player. Still think the bulls should have kept him.

  • Now I just hope my Kings put up a fight against the Tahs. They did lose a lot of players since last year, have to sort of rebuild. Looseforwards should be our weakest point……

  • @KingsArmy (Comment 21) : Yes, and last year looseforwards were your strong suite. Cook is a busy player, what we lose in the fetching we will make up with the play making skills of the loose trio. vd Walt, Lappies and Cook all very good ball players.

  • @KingsArmy (Comment 23) : Definitely! Pace and X-factor aplenty in the Cheetahs back three. Hendricks is a skilful and powerful wing, and Le Roux needs no intro.
