Sharksworld and JustRugby.net are pleased to announce that the 2014 Super Rugby Last Man Standing competition is now open for entry and will be kindly sponsored by CAT® Apparel and BLK Sports.
Last Man Standing is a game that is deceptively simple in concept – yet painfully difficult when it comes to execution. Simply put, there are 15 teams taking part in Super Rugby and all you have to do is correctly predict just one game that each of those 15 teams will win. For every week of Super Rugby, you pick a team which you believe will win their corresponding fixture that week. If the team does win, you stay alive and progress to the next round, with all the teams you have picked previously no longer eligible for selection. In other words, as you progress through the rounds of the game, the list of teams form which you can pick diminishes as the challenge becomes harder and harder.
If the team you pick does not win, though (and a draw unfortunately counts as a loss) then you die. In this way, we whittle down the field until, at some point in the competition, we only have one player left – a Last Man Standing who will win the prize.
The reality, though, is slightly different. We give you a few things to help you on your way, in the form of lifelines and default picks. Last Man Standing is a devilishly hard competition and in the past, we’ve seen 80% of contestants eliminated by the second week, with just one big upset accounting for far too many young lives. In this year’s competition, you’ll have two lifelines each, meaning that your first two deaths don’t count. Bear in mind, though, that if there’s a deadlock at the end, we’ll obviously give the prize to the contestant with the highest number of remaining lifelines. If you forget to make a pick, we’ll assign a default selection for you, but that process will cost you a lifeline. There’s also no guarantee that the default pick will win, though, so it’s quite possible to lose two lifelines in a single round in this way.
We have also introduced four bye picks, to make up for the fact that Super Rugby 2014 will be played over 19 rounds (although rounds 1 and 17 are “split rounds” in which not all teams are playing). You can opt to use a bye in any round and will automatically progress to the next round of the competition unscathed.
Full detail regarding the format and rules of the game can be found here.
Our fantastic sponsors, CAT® Apparel and BLK Sports, have put up some great prizes for this year’s competition. We have CAT® Apparel vouchers, as well as the new BLK Sharks Super Rugby jersey up for grabs for those who do best in the competition.

Can t wait… It s getting close now.
Of course I ll suck in LMS again but it s always fun untill the Cheetahs pull off an upset …
LOL Just thought of something …. When will we ever get to pick the bulls or lions?! Bwahahaha
@Original Pierre (Comment 1) : this year will be easy – the Lions are back in Super Rugby 🙂
Definitely signing up again. This was so much fun the last time I played.
@robdylan (Comment 2) : Don t forget you have to back the lions for a win somewhere …
I ll keep an eye on referee appointments, Jafta could be the key, just like Jonker and Joubert will be for the bulls …
@Original Pierre (Comment 4) : ah crap. I forgot about that.
Lions will manage to beat the Bulls once… they always do
Just to make sure, we start picking our teams in the first week when only the south African teams are playing each other…?
@HeinF (Comment 6) : correct. As it says above, the smart thing to do is use a bye for the split rounds.
Rob, will I have any trouble living in mainland Europe?
@David12246 (Comment 8) : depends. Do you speak the language of the country you’re going to?
WHOOOOO WHOOOOO !!! SUPER EXCITED !!!!!! LETS DO THIS !!!
Awesome!!
@robdylan (Comment 9) : Well done
Edit: Could we make ‘Ask Rob’ a regular feature?
@vanmartin (Comment 12) : hey, I’m always around 🙂
Nice, gona try this game
@TheLegend (Comment 14) : good!
@TheLegend (Comment 14) : although, in the words of Yoda…
No! Try not. Do. Or do not. There is no try.
@robdylan (Comment 13) : Dear Rob, how do I get my wife to watch more rugby with me?
@vanmartin (Comment 17) : buy her a diamond ring and hide it in the couch
@vanmartin (Comment 17) : If you find out please let me know…
@robdylan (Comment 18) : You really think her attention would be on the game in such a case? She’ll locate it within milliseconds anyway. Dear, naive Rob… 🙄
@Pokkel (Comment 19) : I’ll be sure to write a Sharksworld article on it!
I am the First Man Down 😛
@robdylan (Comment 9) : Thought someone might say something like that. Will there be any issues for me being involved in the competition if I live in mainland Europe?
@David12246 (Comment 22) : no problem with being involved… might be a problem with you winning a prize, though! I’ve only arranged prizes for SA winners, but if you are prepared to pay your own shipping, we can sort you out.
@vanmartin (Comment 17) :
At about 14:00 you walk up behind her, grab her bum and whisper “sex or rugby sweetheart?” in her ear.
Enjoy the game.
@VinChainSaw (Comment 24) :
Oh yeah, well said.
It’s the same as getting into bed, and you give your wife her two panado’s with a glass of water, to which she replies: “I don’t have a headache” 😆
@VinChainSaw (Comment 24) : @FireTheLooser (Comment 25) : 😀
@VinChainSaw (Comment 24) : then I will miss the game (even if the game starts at 19h00.
OK I’m in, when do you need my adress to mail my rugby jersey?
@Original Pierre (Comment 1) : The hard one is to pick the Lions, think I’m going to keep them for week 19.
@robdylan (Comment 23) : Hey Rob can my wife enter even if she’s not on SharksWorld?
@robdylan (Comment 23) : Sounds good!
@JD (Comment 30) : ja, of course! Anyone can sign up
Never played this before but sounds like fun….[Note to self: don’t pick strms/sharks in play-offs….lol]
@KingsArmy (Comment 33) : it ends before the play-offs.
But clearly you have a short memory
@JD (Comment 27) :
My friend – they call that a win-win situation…
Unless you’re taking that long because you’re unable to find your little blue pills…
@VinChainSaw (Comment 35) : Not if you’re keen to watch some rugby after a 3 month break and what little blue pill is that? HAHAHAHAHA ;-P
