The Lions confirmed yesterday that the two front-line players who sustained injuries during Saturday’s warm-up against the Southern Kings will indeed miss the start of the 2014 Super Rugby season.
Lock Rudi Mathee, who plays for Lions franchise partner the Pumas, suffered a hairline fracture to his forearm and will thus spend up to eight weeks on the sidelines. Fullback Andries Coetzee’s knee injury, though, was not as serious as feared; he sustained a grade 2 MCL strain, meaning a spell of up to a month out, but fortunately no operation required.
Both players should thus return to the selection frame well ahead of the Lions’ Antipodean tour.

Pumas’ Coenie van Wyk is back at the Lions a week after being released as Ruan Combrinck also suffer light concussion during the Kings game
Always sorry to hear about any injury. Remember our bad run last year ? Lions will struggle during this S15. Depth big problem! Both Martin Muller and Franco Mostert returned from long layoffs with injuries. Not sure where they get a lock to partner Franco? T
@Observer (Comment 2) : can they not play that Britz at 4?
Willie can play 4 but probably not the best second row scrumming option, especially with the inexperienced props we have (apart from Bees Roux)
Another option is Tecklenburg
For S15 you need a proper 4 no make shift !
@Baylion (Comment 4) : Isnt Tecklenberg a bit short? Just judging by seeing him on tv
Ackermann should talk to Naka about a loan agreement for Ligtoring!!
@Original Pierre (Comment 7) : Lol, somehow I don’t think that would work. Landman is going to playing many matches for the Cheetahs. Maybe they can loan Waltie Vermeulen, cos I reckon Andries Ferreira will also be in the S15 final squad.
@KingCheetah (Comment 8) : I reckon all super15 coaches are holding onto their locks very tightly as they all seem to be going down at a quick rate.
We have Franco vd Merwe, Martin Muller, Franco Mostert and Ruan Venter. Not much experiance other than vd Merwe. Why dont we try to bring back Roodt?
@Baylion (Comment 1) : Seeing that we are so thin at fullback at the moment why not move Marnitz to fullback and play Willie du Plessis at flyhalf?
@robdylan (Comment 3) : I like Britz more as an impact player off the bench. I dont rate him as a lock, but he is a very decent back-up to have at loose forward
Bring back Kobus Wiese and u will have the heaviest pack in superrugby……
@KingsArmy (Comment 13) : Wiese can go up againt Matfield 😛
