The Southern Kings have made a few changes to their side that narrowly lost 12 – 19 to the Lions this past Saturday, when they face the Stormers at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Friday night.

Steven Sykes will lead the team that sees no less then 6 changes to the one that played on Saturday. Sykes is taking over the captaincy role from Darron Nell who injured his elbow against the Lions, Stephan Zaayman will be replacing Nell at lock.

Brendon Olivier replaces BG Uys at loose head, who is getting married on the weekend. Albe de Swardt who has recovered from a rib injury comes back into the team replacing Dane van der Westhuysen at hooker, who dislocated his elbow in the match against the Lions.

Amongst the backs, Sonwabo Majola replaces Jaco Grobler at scrumhalf. On the wing, Michael Killian moves to the bench to make way for Eben Barnard and Dwayne Jenner takes over from Ronnie Cooke at outside centre.

Sergeal Petersen who left the field shortly after his try against the Lions, due to a knock to his knee, is fit to take his place on the wing with Barnard to form the back three with Siviwe Soyizwapi.

Southern Kings caretaker coach, Robbie Kempson, said the game against the Stormers would prove challenging, with the Kings playing their third big match in a row and with the loss of some players to injury.

“I think the Stormers are a different kettle of fish completely. They’re a thoroughly professional outfit and they have a strength and depth that most provinces don’t have, so I think that, for us, it is going to be a very competitive game,” he said.

“The team is looking to go out and give them a very good go and a run for their money, we’re not here to just make up the numbers,” he said.

Kick-off is at 7pm (not televised)

  • Stormers should win at a canter. Very average Kings side. Where is Puke Watson by the way? Injured?

  • @SheldonK (Comment 5) : yes watson is injured. As far as I know its the same injury that kept him out for the most of last year. Was miss diagnosed, was told he wouldn’t need a operation and then months later it was still not right. Went to see a diff specialist and was told he needs a operation. So now out for long again. Think its his foot or ankle…..

  • Kings out match by far in this one, but should still be good. Got some young exiting nr2’s coming through the ranks. Albe was a age group loosie at WP a while back and Dane who’s injured for this game was at murry mexted and also captain kings u/21 last year.

  • @KingsArmy (Comment 6) : @pierre_mackie (Comment 8) : Ankle injuries in older players are a problem, Luke is no longer a youngster so if that ankle doesnt come right I dont know how much more playing he will do. Its sad as he showed tremendous talent when at the Sharks and at Bath. I thought he was good at WP but not like he was at Bath or the Sharks. Yes he is a difficult player but I think he has matured and could offer a lot but mayb his best playing days are done.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 10) : I broke my ankle 7 years ago and it always comes back, rolled it again tues playing touch, and our fields are also not the best especially school fields

  • @pierre_mackie (Comment 11) : Well no disrespect but the rehab you did is probably insufficient and im assuming Watsons would be betetr. But still having said that ankle injuries play on other parts of the body and yes he isnt a youngster so could this be a career ender?
