Under 19 loosehead prop Thomas du Toit is the only surprise in the 39-man final Super Rugby squad named by Jake White this morning.

Du Toit has impressed all comers since joining the Academy from Paarl Boys High; his frankly massive 130kg frame belies a fair turn of speed and he will no doubt benefit hugely from working with White and the senior coaches at such a young age, even should he not go on to play Super Rugby in 2014.

Lourens Adriaanse, Tim Swiel, Etienne Oosthuizen and Tonderai Chavanga are the only other players in the group that are new to the Sharks system, while a number of other players uncapped at Super Rugby level have been included, to complement the 17 capped Springboks in the group.

  • Any surprise omissions? Can’t spot any on first glance

(We knew a while back the writing was on the wall for Tim Whitehead)

  • Hard luck Tim Whitehead. Work hard and force your way back into the squad. Good squad, happy with it.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 1) : Is it though? And Edwin Hewitt?

Does this mean they’re not in contention at all, or just playing Vodacom Cup until they’re up to fitness/form or injuries strike?

  • @vanmartin (Comment 1) : I find it very hard when the team is listed alphabetically like this. Will need to rearrange per position, which will make it easier to tell who isn’t there

  • @vanmartin (Comment 1) : Surprised Whitehead haven`t been approached by another union yet.

Maybe he`s quietly negotiating behind the scenes.

He might fit in well with the FS, however the Lions needs him more. They`ll probably approach Steven Sykes as well?

  • So who’s backup 13 with Tim out?

We have Jordaan, Sithole and I presume Pietersen – anyone else?

Surprised that Ungerer already made the squad, so the future will definitely be him and Reinach. This should be McLeod’s final season with the Sharks.

How tall is that 19 yo prop?

  • So Chuffed with Ungerer!!! So the Red Black and White have an Old boy in the Sharks squad as well as in the Bulls!

  • @MerckZ (Comment 3) : Definitely not out of contention but reliant on injuries to crack the squad. With our new found depth at inside centre it’s going to be tough going for Tim.

@Original Pierre (Comment 5) : I’d be really happy for him if he got the opportunity at another union. Would be a shame not to see him play in Super Rugby this year.

Prop: Wiehahn Herbst is the big name. Also no room for Mienie or Dell
Lock: Edwin Hewitt and Marco Wentzel…. both expected.
Loose forward: Justin Downey, Francois Kleinhans, Plank Meyer… all cut previously so no big surprise
    Centre: Tim Whitehead
    Wing: Sizo Maseko
    Fullback: Sean Robinson

  • @robdylan (Comment 9) : Well he originally came as a 13. Probably too slow though.

We’re very thin at 13, I suppose that’s an SA epidemic, especially when shcool’s are coached to play 10 man rugby. 13’s have no opportunity to develop.

Biggest thing for me in the first few games this year is going to be the composition of the bench.

Would say we’re all pretty close to knowing what the starting lineup is going to look like. The interesting thing will be how Jake incorporates the likes of Fisher/Esterhuizen/Swiel.

It is 23-man matchday squads, right?

  • @GreatSharksays (Comment 50) : to me, it’s simple. The Sharks…. that’s the place to be at the moment. If you want to stay and fight for a place, we welcome and embrace that attitude. If you want to leave and go play somewhere else because you’re not first choice, then rather do that.

  • @robdylan (Comment 49) : If he is a filler, why not Justin Downey or Kleynhans, who are way younger. I like Jacques (great leader & motivator) & my understanding he will take up a position with Sharks in the future in some sort of capacity.
Just hope Kanko kicks butt when he plays because he has Tera to contend with.Who will play off No.6?Keegan,Botes,Marcel,Tera? Alberts & Deysel can fight for No.7.

Didn’t Heimar Williams play in the match against the Kings as well?

I mean he hasnt even been asked to play for A Varsity Cup side. Herbst should def stick it out but ive heard of overseas rumours about him. Whitehead can go im afraid, plenty of young quick talent coming through. Nice guy, decent player but not in the elite. Nice to hear Hansie Graaf eventually found his way onto the field…such a pity he had to disturb his lovely Durban Summer holiday haha

  • Comment 56, posted at 11.02.14 14:27:40 by Saffex Reply

  • I think Jake will go with this team:

    15. SP, 14. Odwa, 13. Jordaan, 12. Steyn, 11. Mvovo, 10. Lambie, 9. Reinach, 8. Kanko, 7. Deysel, 6. Marcell, 5. PSDT, 4. Bresler, 3. Jannie, 2. Bissie, 1. Beast.

    16. Adriaanse, 17. Chadwick, 18. Cooper, 19. Oosthuizen, 20. Willem, 21. McLeod, 22. Zeilinga, 23. Sithole/Esterhuizen

That’s my best shot at what the 23 will look like … Sithole and Esterhuizen impressed the most of the backs that weren’t necessarily in the picture. Both could lose out completely by round 3, when JP returns – depending on Jordaan’s form.

Yip, he did give another dimension to the Sharks back line, a thinking dimension, but I’ve always felt like he needed to work on his space – you can’t have a guy in the back line slower than most loose forwards and some locks.

It’s up to him, Jake said, Tim needs to work on his speed, he could work on it and be a better player for it, or find another union and see where he gets without improving that aspect of his game.

Botes was the best thing to come off the bench the whole year and the go to man when he had to start. I don’t think you can write either off even if it is to blood new talent a few years left in both of them.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 69) : We have to have at least one alcohol free area to accommodate everyone. I will not be in it. I started going to rugby at Kings Park in the very early 70’s and I am still a regular. I couldn’t guess how many games I have been to as a kid and as an adult and I have never had an unsavoury incident. Listen there are assholes there both drunk and sober but I have had to deal with much worse at other places. I have been taking my wife son now 16 and daughter now 13 for at least 5 years as a family regularly. Prior to that it was the odd game now and then. Before kids we were season ticket holders as we are now. This year we took advantage of the half price tickets in the main stands instead of scholar seats. There is nothing that will keep us away. If there is an “incident” I am old and ugly enough to keep my family away from it. Oh yes I was once also a student.

  • @Saffex (Comment 56) : Fisher at 13 makes me lot more comfortable with our depth at 13, and I suppose Swiel will be the obvious backup at 15.

There seems to be an undertone of including backline players able to cover two positions. Swiel and Sithole would always make my bench should they not crack the starting lineup.

    Swiel – fh/fb
    Sithole – 13/wing
    Odwa – wing/fb

  • @markp (Comment 72) : Firstly I like your outlook on things. I do believe that the stands should be alcohol free as nobody like having beer spilled on them on purpose or accident. I have no problem with guys braaing and drinking on the fields beforehand, in fact i think fans should be encouraged to braai before the game and big braai areas set up for that purpose if you dont have a field parking. As you say no matter the rules there will always be idiots, such is life but its whether you are an idiot as well that determines your experience. Lets just hope there is a good crowd on Saturday

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 77) : That does seem to be JW’s thinking in the recent past. He picks a genuine 9 and 10 and the rest of the backline could pretty much interchange anywhere. It helps with who to pick on the bench etc. Same with his loose forwards.

  • @Saffex (Comment 74) : Mcleod first choice 9 and leaving out Bresler is a crime.

  • Considering the way we know the Bulls will play, someone like Jaco Van Toner could be a savvy pick at 15.

  • @Talent (Comment 82) : Dont be surprised if the Bulls move away from a forward orientated game as they dont have the forward pack they used to. Their backline is actually pretty decent so i can see them running it a lot unless they in the 22 then it will be rash, bash and maul

  • @Talent (Comment 80) : Bresler is good, I’d be happy to see him there

  • @Talent (Comment 81) : Cant see Deysel playing at 6…..that would be stupid…….cant see Coetzee being left out the starting 15

  • @robdylan (Comment 4) : The Natal Mercury has decided that there are 40 players in the squad the 40th being Wiehann Herbst and that Oosthuizen is a flank although I have only seen him play at lock. Maybe thier sports desk should consult with the Sharks management before releasing a poster.
