Sharks lose Fisher to injury

Young Sharks utility back Tyler Fisher will have any potential Super Rugby debut put on ice as he’s had to have surgery to correct a shoulder injury sustained during last month’s warm-up game against Saracens.

20-year-old Fisher was one of a number of youngsters plucked from obscurity by new coach Jake White to play in that match; having regularly been picked as an outside centre, he was given an opportunity to start at fullback against Saracens and acquitted himself well, before the shoulder knock forced him from the field at half time.

This latest setback is a blow indeed, given that Fisher missed out on the end of the 2013 season due to surgery to the other shoulder. The current injury is expected to keep him out of action for around three months, but the good new is that he’s already had the (successful) operation and is well on his way to recovery.

  • 👿 Here we go! “Glass boy?” Oh wait, that only applies to non-Sharks players right? Pity, he showed great potential, hope he recovers soon, and doesn’t get injured soon, or he will get labelled quickly by the cynics.

  • I hate to say it but the issue is raised again, are the youngsters bodies really for the big time. Yes in terms of height, weight and size yes but are the muscles and bones developed enough and hardened for that top flight rugby. Its cases like this and Goosen etc that make you think…

  • Hey Rob, Allan Dell has signed for Edinburgh, so he is out of the picture now

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 2) : Nah, I am just baiting the baiters, who are always having a go at Gosen. I am not that cynical at all, and believe the young Fisher will still play a lot of rugby.

  • Now that JPP is back I guess Odwa will be next in line for fullback duty should SP get injured?

  • @KingCheetah (Comment 6) : You must admit though, the “glass boy” name calling has not been dis-proven as yet.

The same was true of Andries Bekker, one stroll too many to his infamous park, and his “glass spine” would buckle. 😈

In SA we have the ability to find a perceived weakness, and go after it with everything we’ve got. It seems to be our defense mechanism.

  • How’s Goosen doing. He looked doubtful after 25min of play in the Cheetahs game.

  • Bad luck Tyler, we look forward to you making a big impact in senior rugby soon. I am not sure about him being too young at his age the body can endure the most and recover quicker. There is not much more bone or muscle development left for him. It is not an exact science but having watched him through school boy rugby he was an early developer. Some boys reach their full hight at 16 and then just fill out and get stronger some only get to their full hight at about 19 or 20 and that will effect when their bones and muscles are fully developed.

  • Tyler picked up this injury it seems last year but played through most of the season without knowing the severity of the injury. It was during practise that it was dislocated and not only at saracens. So well done “Glass boy ” for the effort put in while being injured. Seems some cynics do not understand commitment.

  • @sharksupport (Comment 32) :

As a veteran of 4 dislocated shoulder (AC and inferior – different shoulders) I share his pain. It never improves and makes one self-conscious, especially when going in for a tackle.

    A true ghastly sporting affliction.
