On a day when he’s not shy to share bad news, Supersport writer Brenden Nel revels that Lions flanker Derick Minnie looks set for a lengthy spell on the Vodacom Super Rugby sidelines.
Minnie apparently suffered a cheekbone fracture due to a clash of heads with Stormers opposite number Schalk Burger during Saturday’s derby at Ellis Park. Minnie was replaced by Warwick Tecklenberg in the 26th minute of the game and while the Lions haven’t yet confirmed the duration of his time out, it’s expected to be substantial.
Minnie will miss out against the Bulls at Loftus this weekend (who have loose forward problems of their own), with fit-again Willie Britz earmarked for his sport in the number 7 jersey. It remains to be seen how many other matches he will miss, but one would assume he’d certainly be out of the reckoning to face the Sharks – a team for whom he played last year – in round 4.

Oooh, I bet you couldn’t wait to write that headline when you heard of Minnie’s injury 😆
@FireTheLooser (Comment 1) : you know me
Another injury to the Lions. Luckily loose forwards we have cover in Willie Britz and Warwick Tecklenburg
@Mutley (Comment 3) : no disrespect, but neither is fit to replace Derick Minnie.
Any thing that collides with Schalk Burger’s head is going to come off second best.
Stormers can be lucky he went off, could have added another 10 points to their score
@The Great Couch Shark (Comment 5) : Schalk is the stormers Chuck Norris. And i breath a sigh of relief he is a thorn in many sides is minnie.
@robdylan (Comment 4) : Yes that I know, they are capable replacements but not as good a Minnie
Out for about 12 weeks, apparently.
