Super Rugby Team of the Round – round 3

Given the, um, “nonsense” dished up by the majority of South African teams and players in round 3 of Vodacom Super Rugby, it’s not going to be easy to select a form domestic fifteen. We’ll give it a bash anyway.

15. Our banker, Willie le Roux, was only marginally better than the rest of a poor Cheetahs team, which unfortunately isn’t good enough to gain him selection. This week, the nod goes to Lions man Chrysander Botha who mixed some very good play with some rather average moments. I know he’s not eligible for Bok selection, but the bottom of the barrel will truly be scraped this week.
14. Akona Ndungane made a statement, along with the bulk of his Bulls teammates. It wasn’t a very big or very loud one, but a statement all the same. Stormers newbie Kobus van Wyk came close.
13. This position is really, really tough because NOBODY put up their hand. JJ Engelbrecht gets in on team performance and having slightly better individual stats than runner-up JW Jonker. Jean de Villiers and Johann Sadie were both atrocious.
12. We’ll go with one of the few Stormers to play like the name says. Damian de Allende had a good game. Bulls man Jan Serfontein is the runner up.
11. Bjorn Basson did what he does best, but when he does it well, he does it very well indeed. Hard to pick a runner up.
10. It all starts with a plan, but for that plan to work, you need a man who can execute the plan. Jacques-Louis Potgieter knows the Bulls plan like the back of his hand and was head and shoulders above any other local flyhalf. Let’s give Demetri Catrakilis an honourable mention for that cool kick to win the match for the Stormers.
9. Slim pickings, but Francois Hougaard was much better last week. Faf de Klerk was reasonable, while the others were rubbish.

8. Some reasonable performances, but nothing that really stood out. Let’s give it to Warren Whiteley for always trying his best – a sentimental pick, but it’s otherwise just too easy to pick the entire Bulls team.
7. Jacques du Plessis played probably his best game in a Bulls jersey to date. Siya Kolisi did all right for the Stormers too.
6. Jaco Kriel hands down. The Cheetahs got murdered at the breakdown in Melbourne, while Jono Ross is still trying to figure out where the breakdown is. Deon Fourie was next best and scored a crucial try for the Stormers.
5. Victor Matfield made a big difference to his team. Nice one, old-timer…. now keep it up.
4. Flip van der Merwe was very important in getting the Bulls the win. I was impressed with Mike Rhodes too, even though he came on as a replacement and probably didn’t even play 4.
3. Not a lot to write home about, but Werner Kruger had a decent cameo. Coenie Oosthuizen put in some decent charges too.
2. I’m very tempted to say that even without playing, Bismarck was the best hooker in the country. Scarra Ntubeni had a good game in the loose, but struggled with a few lineouts. On balance, though, he was better than the only other genuine contender, Adriaan Strauss, who’s having a poor season so far.
1. Another sentimental pick, but I’ll go with Schalk van der Merwe here. He’s an honest young player who tries hard – also, I simply cannot entertain ever selecting Dean Greyling for so much as a social bowling team. Honourable menbion to Caylib Oosthuizen who was shocking like the rest of the Cheetahs, but stylishly so, at least.

There you go, folks. I pity the fool of a Bok coach who would ever try to go into a test match with this motley crew…

  • Matfield isn’t old enough that he’s gonna have trouble keeping it up.

  • Matfield = Lineout = Matfield

As for the rest of his game, it seems the bulls scrum – which impressed against the Sharks – was pretty average with Matfield there.

  • I didnt see the Stormers game but they must have been really crap to only have de Allende and Ntubeni getting the nod.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 9) : De Allende was actually pretty decent to be honest. Probably their best player. I still think he should play 13 and Devilliers at 12.

  • @robdylan (Comment 12) : It’s day 10 of having no Sharks games to watch. Withdrawal symptoms taking their toll.

Even though having an early bye is a good thing for the team, it doesn’t feel like it to us supporters.

  • The off-season worked wonders for Kruger and Greyling. 3rd game already and no yellow card for a scrum offense. Quite refreshing this year, between all the issues.
