Fullback switch for Boshoff

The Lions have named their side to face the Sharks at Growthpoint Kings Park this weekend, with a few changes in the backline offsetting an almost unchanged forward pack.

In perhaps the biggest switch, leading points scorer Marnitz Boshoff has been moved to full back, as Ackermann gambles on Elton Jantjies at flyhalf. Jantjies has proved a real thorn in the Sharks’ flesh in the past and you can understand the coach’s thinking in terms of wanting to bring back a little bit of that free-running panache to the backline, but backing a player who has been out with injury for so long in such a big game certainly does seem risky.

Chrysander Botha shifts to left wing from fullback, with Deon van Rensburg taking over from JW Jonker at outside centre. Ruan Combrinck switches wings in the final change to the starting team.

Willie Wepenar takes over from Robbie Coetzee at hooker in the only change to the pack.

Lions: 15 Marnitz Boshoff, 14 Ruan Combrinck, 13 Deon van Rensburg, 12 Stefan Watermeyer, 11 Chrysander Botha, 10 Elton Jantjies, 9 Francois de Klerk, 8 Warren Whiteley (captain), 7 Warwick Tecklenburg, 6 Jaco Kriel, 5 Franco van der Merwe, 4 Franco Mostert, 3 Julian Redelinghuys, 2 Willie Wepener, 1 Schalk van der Merwe.
Replacements: 16 Robbie Coetzee, 17 Corne Fourie, 18 Ruan Dreyer, 19 Luvuyiso Lusaseni, 20 Willie Britz, 21 Ross Cronje, 22 JW Jonker, 23 Coenie van Wyk.

  • As per my comment on the predictions thread, I suspect the Lions are planning on doing some tactical kicking in favour of drop-goals.

  • this plan actually makes sense from their perspective. It does nothing to neutralise the kicking threat from Boshoff, but will bring a lot more variation into their backline play

  • There is not too much pace in that backline. They will kick for territory and hope to tackle. So pretty much copy the Sharks game plan- always a risky thing to do

  • Our backline does not really have any magic and match winners other than Boshoff and Jantjies. Volmink will hopefully be back next week

  • Does anyone know anything about Stokkies Hanekom? He looked really promising during the Currie Cup last year, I would have thought he would be involved in SR this year. Is he injured, not rated by Ackerman, leaving for Europe?

  • Hanekom was just left out of the Lions squad. I really rate him as a 13, since the Sharks are kinda thin in this position, I would love if we approached him with an offer.

  • It’s really confusing to me that they would rather play Deon van Resnburg, a 32 year old wing at 13, instead of a promising 24 year old centre.

  • Wow, good old Ackers has still not woken up to the fact that Stokkies Hanekom is by far their best prospect at 13…….he is now down to the useless Deon v/Rensburg at 13…… about ignorance of the highest level. Last week it was the average JW Jonker……Jordaan should have a field day against Deon

  • @Letgo (Comment 8) :
I thought he was injured. I cant believe the Lions would leave him out considering how thin they are in most positions.

It seems a little odd to me to, but I can’t find anything on an injury, or anything else, so it seems that he was just left out.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 1) : Good point. I was surprised but that does make sense.

Looking at the weather forecast, 30 degrees and 70% humidity. Oooof. Preparing for quite a bit of kicking this weekend.

  • Hanekom cooked his goose when he disappeared on defence against the Sharks during pre-season. There is no way Ackies will pick a player with so little heart

  • @Saffex (Comment 16) : personally, I’d love it if they picked him. Makes it easier for Steyn and Jordaan to score tries.

  • Are the Lions allowed to have one less prop on the bench if they have Van Rensburg in the team?
Sure he might not be as big as some props, but he sure has the same kind of pace . . .

  • @Saffex (Comment 16) : Stokkies played precisely 1/2 a game in the entire Currie Cup last year.
He picked up his injury in the opening game against OFS and was out for the rest of the season. The Lions starting centre pairing for most of the Currie Cup games was Dylan des Fountain and Robert de Bruyn both of whom have also been out with long term injuries although I see des Fountain is in the Vodacom cup side for the weekend. Stokkies did play well in the Super rugby promo – relegation games.
I agree with Rob that Stokkies did his reputation no good in the Lions warm up games with a very poor performance in the game against the Sharks where he was exposed on defence. for what it is worth he is on the bench for the Vodacom Cup side this weekend

  • @Saffex (Comment 16) : Is this the way you always communicate, even when not online? Your response to anyone you disagree with is always “what a load of crap.” And then you provide nothing to back up your statement.

@steve (Comment 21) : 😆 😆 😆 😆 😆 I guess saffex is the one that missed all his Currie Cup appearances last year.

  • Everyone is commenting on being thin at 13….Tyler Fisher is one option when he is back from injury. There are a number of players at other levels which are not being given the opportunity at all with the current system regarding rugby in natal. Sad but true we are not accomodating those players unless they are from Rovers or Collegians. There are no “OFFICIALS” from the sharks at other games unless it is those two clubs playing.

  • @sharksupport (Comment 23) : you fancy naming the players that you think should be getting a look in?

I’m always a little skeptical about this sort of “give club players a chance” thing… there’s just such a big difference in quality.
