Former Cheetahs and Edinburgh lock, Izak van der Westhuizen, will be amongst the first to join the EP Kings as they prepare for their first season in the Currie Cup Premier Division. EP Rugby CEO, Charl Crous, said the 28 year old signed a three year deal and will join the Kings in June.

Van der Westhuizen made his Super Rugby debut for the Cheetahs against the Brumbies in 2010. He was on the injury list for most of the 2011 season, but regained his regular spot and started in all of their 12 games during their 2012 Super Rugby season.

At the end of 2012 he moved to Scottish club Edinburgh, where he has been a regular in their match day squads. Van der Westhuizen is very well known for his great line-out and restart abilities and was named man of the match in Edinburgh last match.

“I am very excited about the new challenge ahead for myself and my family. In the last Super Rugby season I gained a lot of respect for the Kings and the way they are doing things in PE, and hope I can add to that in a positive way.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time at the club, especially in the last couple of months without injury. I’m settled in Edinburgh and really enjoy the city but I’m from a very tight-knit family and the chance to be closer to them was one of the biggest, most important reasons.” said Van der Westhuizen.

Former EP Kings and current Edinburgh Rugby Head coach, Alan Solomons added: “Sakki [Izak van der Westhuizen] has done a splendid job for us this year and will continue to do so until the end of the season. An opportunity has presented itself back in his home country that suits him and his young family. I’m sure he will make a valuable contribution at the Kings.”
