Tight five changes for Stormers

The Stormers team named to face the Chiefs in Hamilton on Friday features three injury-enforced changes to the unit that narrowly went down against the Crusaders last weekend.

Jaco Taute has recovered from a shoulder injury sustained in Christchurch and will thus resume his position at fullback in an unchanged back division; likewise, Schalk Burger, Deon Fourie and Duane Vermeulen comprise a loose trio that will enjoy another opportunity to build on a great display against the former champions.

It’s in the front five, though, that injury has struck, removing Michael Rhodes and Scarra Ntubeni from the squad entirely, while Frans Malherbe is touch and go for a bench role at best. Young former Lion Ruan Botha makes his first start in the number 4 jersey, while a pair of veterans in Tiaan Liebenberg and Brok Harris take over at hooker and tighthead prop respectively.

Vodacom Cup hooker Stephan Coetzee has been flown over to provide bench cover, while Malherbe may be replaced by Boland’s Martin Dreyer on the bench if he fails a late fitness test. In the final change, Siya Kolisi returns to the mix and will sit alongside Nizaam Carr on the bench; the assumption being that Duane Vermeulen will slot in at lock later in the game should the need arise.

DHL Stormers :15.Jaco Taute, 14. Kobus van Wyk, 13. Jean de Villiers (captain), 12.Damian de Allende, 11.Gio Aplon, 10.Demetri Catrakilis, 9.Nic Groom, 8.Duane Vermeulen, 7.Schalk Burger, 6.Deon Fourie, 5.De Kock Steenkamp, 4.Ruan Botha, 3.Brok Harris, 2.Tiaan Liebenberg, 1.Steven Kitshoff.
Replacements: 16.Stephan Coetzee, 17.Oliver Kebble, 18.Frans Malherbe, 19.Siya Kolisi, 20.Nizaam Carr, 21.Louis Schreuder, 22.Peter Grant, 23.Sailosi Tagicakibau.

  • Taute looked to have serious pain in that knee a few times last week.

I really fear for the guy. Great talent, but he needs to be careful of doing himself long term harm.

  • I wonder when last Vermuelen played lock. Catrakilis has been pretty poor this year, and is standing way too deep. I would have started Grant this game as Chiefs will attack 10 channel. Should be a good loose forward battle

  • @SheldonK (Comment 2) : Catrakilis has been pretty shite. Just shows how important coaching has become.

  • @West Indies Cricket Board (Comment 3) : He isnt demanding the ball, looks like he has lost all confidence etc. Stormers have a great backline but are being undone at 10 unfortunately
