First start for Sithole

JP Pietersen returns to the Sharks team at right wing this week, with Jake White also backing S’bura Sithole in the all-important number 13 jersey as he names his side to take on the Reds on Saturday.

Patrick Lambie and Anton Bresler have both been passed fit to play, allowing White to select an unchanged pack for the fourth game in a row. Lambie’s return at flyhalf makes for a rather drastic-seeming backline reshuffle, with only Cobus Reinach, Lwazi Mvovo and SP Marais starting in the same shirts they wore against the Lions last week. Frans Steyn moves from flyhalf to inside centre, with Heimar Williams dropping back onto the bench. Sithole, who has operated at wing for all of his young career, will earn a first Super Rugby start in the position which White believes he will become a Springbok – outside centre. Sithole replaces Paul Jordaan, who was this week ruled out for around a month with a knee problem.

White’s reticence to introduce Pietersen straight into the fray, after he only arrived in Durban on Tuesday, seems to have been overruled by the team’s need. With Odwa Ndungane away on compassionate leave, the lanky Springbok has been given the number 14 jersey.

Among the reserves, Tera Mtembu takes over from Jean Deysel as loose forward replacement, the latter having picked up a knock in a training ground accident. Jaco van Tonder also comes into the 23 for the first time this year and will provide back three cover.

  • In my mind, it’s not too much of a risk. If Sithole looks jittery out there he can simply swop with JP.

  • Jake White is so open with what he is doing with the team, that this one really wasn’t that hard to pick.

He said he really rated Sithole as a 13 and he also said he wanted speed on Lambie and Steyn’s outside. Sithole was the obvious pick.

I think he is going to do really well btw. I really hope he does.

  • @woody (Comment 3) : Doubt it. Our loose trio have been firing lately and White admitted that he was wrong to yank off players just for the sake of subbing.

  • I probably would`ve been a little worried if we started Sithole against the Chiefs, but I`ve got complete confidence in JW, he wouldn`t do it if he didn`t have a very good reason.

Sure I think we might see him mess up one or two things, but what if it really is a stroke of brilliance?

Tempted to say it`s only the reds, but that might come back to bite me. However, it is after all our Home Ground and we aren`t Log Leaders for nothing . . .

  • @Letgo (Comment 4) : The great thing about Jake White is that he knows how to motivate people. Jittery hands boils down to a lack of confidence, so White has told Sithole that he can be a Springbok. Hows that for the ultimate confidence boost?

  • Injuries aside this is still a strong team – excited to see Sithole in the mix.
I wonder who is our fastest wing in our team Mvovo, JP or Sithole?? I once saw Sithole score a try for the SA 7’s – hy is kak vinnig

  • @Letgo (Comment 4) : True. I like the openness too and I’m sure it inspires the players when the coach doesn’t say one thing to the media and then goes and does something else when push comes to shove.

  • I must say I do like the look of this side. Sithole was a 7s Bok so he definitely has all the skills and speed. I kno Bismarck is captain but he has tended to fade in last 10-15min which is wen Cooper needs to come on. Terra and Kanko could cause havoc in 2nd half is game opens up.

  • Interesting to see Tera rated above Keegan and Botes as the 5th choice loosie.

I would imagine that they would have to look at playing elsewhere to get any game time, what a pity.

  • What!? Heimar Williams not at outside centre…Jake White knows nothing about rugby (just ask saffex 😈 ).

Anyways, good team, eager to see hosepipe at 13. I hope he brings his A-game and does not allow the occasion of his first start in SR (in years) does not overwhelm him. If he stays calm, we could be in for a treat.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 14) : To be fair though, Saffex is the only rugby authority on earth and that’s why he’s coaching top international sides. Jake is simply trying to keep up.

  • This does look like good side! I have to say this for Jake, he would not have picked Sithole at 13 if he didn’t believe he could play there! I had my doubts when I first heard about the switch in the beginning of the season, but hey, all my world cup trophies was won on the couch!
@FireTheLooser (Comment 14) : Btw, we had the whole thing about nicks, where did Sithole get the hosepipe nick? πŸ˜‰

  • @robdylan (Comment 16) : I really hope he’s able to keep his emotions together, I can imagine it will be a nervous day for him, especially as he’s been so close for so long.

  • Still a very strong team – despite losing 2 Springboks.

Very happy to see JP back (still one of my favourites), and very excited for Sbura. I hope he gets some chances to run the ball.

Interesting to see that almost all other rugby site is only writing or talking about JPP been included where as here everyone is talking about Sbura. πŸ™‚

  • I think Sithole will be great at 13 Jordaan has been showing what a difference genuine pace can make outside the bulk of Frans Steyn

  • @Big Fish (Comment 19) : Well if the Reds don’t make significant improvements to their defensive system I’m sure you’ll get your wish. Especially if they are determined to play using only half the width of the field.

  • With Steyn almost always having a look at taking on the midfield, you find that the opposition 13 drifts closer to the anticipated tackle point, when Steyn passes, there is almost always more space than you would find playing next to a “passing 12”. Thus the selection of a man with speed outside Steyn.

Jordaan is the outside center with most meter made in the Comp. I wouldn’t be surprised if Sithole just takes over the mantle from him.

  • Well done Jake White!!! We as Sharks fans appreciate consistency in selection, and living by your word. Wether or not we agree with selections (which i do), they are consistent with the message you have delivered. Everyone knows what Jake wants and what is expected from each player…

BTW I love the selections…This kid has long since needed the backing and confidence of a proper coach…not just words – but loyalty.

Excited to see how Sithole and Tera go (hoping the latter gets 20min or so).
