Worst fears confirmed: Pieter-Steph’s season is over

We can unfortunately confirm that Sharks lock Pieter-Steph du Toit will play no further rugby in 2014.

The big young second-rower suffered an ACL rupture during training yesterday and scans have confirmed that the required surgery and rehabilitation will keep him out of action for the rest of the season.

This is obviously hugely disappointing news for the player and for the team, but we know that Steph will be back better than ever in 2015.

Our thoughts are with the young man.

Sharksworlders, please post your messages of support for Pieter-Steph and we’ll see that he gets them.

  • Absolutely gutted. Wish Pieter-Steph all the best with his recovery.

  • As an aside, I really wish there was some major medical advancement made in the area of knee and shoulder injuries. Rebuilding of knees using nanotubes and synthetic sharks blood or something.

  • Shocking news. Good luck with the recovery PS, greatness is worth waiting for!

On a side note, this is happening WAY too often, how many more players must have season ending injuries before the men up top realize something is not right. Or must there first be a few career ending ones?

Well, except for polio, obviously. Or yuppie flu… Or gout… er… I think I’ll stop now

  • @Die Kriek (Comment 7) : What’s the solution tho? Tell them to stop playing rugby? This didn’t even happen in a game it was in training.

Rugby is a contact sport. No matter how good someone is at the game, knees and shoulders are not designed to under go what they do in this sport. I stopped playing rugby after surgery on my should, but if I had the choice I would still have rather played then not risk it.

  • Geez that a tough break for both him and the Sharks and Boks.Luckily he has Bismarck around that has been through it and can give him guidence. The other Sharks locks will have to step up now. Big door just opened for Lewies

  • Steph – tough break kiddo, but it’s a tough game and we know you’re strong enough to come back from this. Use your time away from the field wisely and give back as much as you can.

2015 is going to be a big year for you on the field, but you can still make 2014 a great one off it.

  • I really feel for you Pieter-Steph and I wish you a speedy recovery! I had a spinal fusion when I was 14 and I couldn’t do anything for a year so I know what frustrations you’ll be going through.

Just pray, keep your family and friends close and stay involved with something (maybe coaching at a school) to keep your mind occupied. God Bless!

  • You are world class. You are immensely talented and humble. YOU ARE VERY YOUNG AND YOUR RUGBY CAREER is still ahead of you. When the knee surgeons operate these days, they ensure the knee is actually stronger than before. Be patient, do all your rehab. We await your return in 2015. Get well Pieter-Steph.

  • This is real bad news for him and the team. Huge loss to the Sharks S15 campaign too.

I was really hoping he would claim the Bok 5 jersey this year once and for all. I guess HM recruiting Matfield was not the bad move I thought it would be.

  • Well Pieter-Steph, what do I say to you at a time like this, as a Sharks supporter I am gutted that you are out injured for the rest of the season. I hope and pray that the operation will go well and that you will return even stronger.

However please take this time to live life to the fullest, because you have been blessed with an extraordinary gift, but that gift does not define you as a human being. I trust that you will find opportunities to carry on giving enjoyment to people (as you already do as a Shark)and add to their life.

All the best in your recovery.

  • Vasbyt Pieter-Stef!

  • Raises questions about;
1)the type of game South Africans play 2) the amount of Rugby these guys play 3) the conditioning these guys have. Is there enough fluidity using barbels?

For those interested in this sort of thing Doc Roberts posted an interesting article a few months ago regarding the latest breakthrough research into why the ACL doesn’t heal and any tears need to be repaired surgically. Find him on twitter @sportsmedoc if Im not mistaken
