Bulls lose a lock too

A hammer blow has hit the Vodacom Bulls ahead of Saturday’s Super Rugby derby against the Sharks as their captain, Flip van der Merwe, has picked up an injury in training.

Bok van der Merwe will now play no role in Saturday’s game. The Bulls’ opponents, the Sharks, suffered a similar fate last week with start lock Pieter-Steph du Toit picking up a horror knee injury during the Thursday training session.

Early indications, though, are that van der Merwe’s hamstring injury is not serious – certainly not season-ending one like du Toit’s ACL injury.

Paul Willemse will move into the starting lineup to replace van der Merwe, with Grant Hattingh moving in to sit on the bench. Victor Matfield will captain the side.

Vodacom Bulls: 15 Jurgen Visser, 14 Sampie Mastriet, 13 J J Engelbrecht, 12 Jan Serfontein, 11 Bjorn Basson, 10 Jacques-Louis Potgieter, 9 Francois Hougaard, 8 Dewald Potgieter, 7 Jacques du Plessis, 6 Deon Stegmann, 5 Victor Matfield (captain), 4 Paul Willemse , 3 Werner Kruger, 2 Callie Visagie, 1 Dean Greyling
Substitutes: 16 Bongi Mbonambi, 17 Marcel vd Merwe, 18 Grant Hattingh , 19 Jono Ross, 20 Piet van Zyl, 21 HandrΓ© Pollard, 22 Ulrich Beyers, 23 MornΓ© Mellet

  • That is quite a setback for the Bulls who probably were looking at the lineout as their biggest weapons against us.

  • Speaking of locks, some really good news is that Pieter-Steph’s operation today was apparently a big success!

  • @gregkaos (Comment 1) : Agreed, this is good news for us.

Luckily I got in on the betting action before this news, as I`m sure it`ll have an effect on our odds . . . 😈

  • Big loss for them!

No doubt Saffex will be along quickly to tell me I’m an idiot for not backing a much less experienced player. πŸ˜† Wonder what he will have to say about this crop of players when they turn 24ish πŸ˜† probably not as good as the school boys πŸ˜† πŸ˜†

  • Put pressure on their set piece and Hougaard craps himself, game over! πŸ˜†

  • @gregkaos (Comment 2) : That’s great news. However it would be interesting to hear the full story of what happened to him, how did he injure himself so badly.

  • going to make the game more interesting. Willemse gives away many penalties and is doff with things he does. Matfield is no enforcer either.

  • Odds still the same on sportsbet . . . Either they don`t know about this yet or they figure it won`t make a difference either way . . .

  • @robdylan (Comment 9) : Oi Rob, totally off topic, you fancy running an article on a fantasy Sharks team from the modern era 90s, 00s and 10s. You pick yours and we comment below…or has this been done recently??
