Herbst pens Ulster deal

The Sharks confirmed on Friday that tighthead prop Wiehahn Herbst will leave Durban at the end of the current Super Rugby season.

Herbst, who first played for the Sharks at Super Rugby level in 2009 after serving his apprenticeship in the junior ranks, will join Irish club side Ulster, following a well-trodden path laid out by Sharks stars including Johann Muller, BJ Botha, Ruan Pienaar and Stefan Terblanche.

Herbst – affectionately known as Wors – has signed on for three years in what he says is a “great opportunity to develop [his] career and to take it to the next level”. Currently queued behind Boks in Jannie du Plessis and Lourens Adriaanse, he looks unlikely to add significantly to his tally of 37 Super Rugby appearance for the Sharks this season.

We’d like to wish Wors and new wife Denise all the best for this next chapter. We’ll miss you dearly.

  • Expected, but still sad news all the same. In Jannie and Lourens we have 2 boks who, I’m sure, will provide each other with healthy competition. Any news regarding our lock crisis? Are we going to bring in someone in the interim, or just stick with Alberts for the time being?

  • @Sharkszen (Comment 1) : Jake White is said to be close to a signing, but I have no clue who it is.

  • Think Herbst is making a wise decision here, NH conditions will take his scrumming technique to the next level.

I hope there’s a long term plan in place to get him back to the Sharks once his overseas contract runs out – depending on form off course.

  • @robdylan (Comment 3) : Come on Rob you must have a few clues coming out of the rumor mill? 🙄

Maybe Muller, Anton Van Zyl, Q Roux, J Marais……Bekker? Danie Russow? Sykes, Mostert….jeeez Jake white would most probably look at a old hand leader type player and then someone he has worked with…I think it would be someone like Bekker, Muller…a hint at the hints you have, maybe…

  • I just read an article (against my better judgement I might add) on Supersport about unhappiness in the Sharks camp due to JW’s strict principal like coaching. Obviously, fringe players will move on due to unhappiness about the pecking order and not because of happiness about working hard during the off season??? Again, I should have known better than to read that stupid article!

  • @bokbok (Comment 8) : Change is always painful…but everything they’ve done in the past have failed.

Time to win SR, anyone unhappy to do so should kindly move on to the tsietas.

  • @bokbok (Comment 8) : heard some players refer to him as ‘Jake the Snake’. I think he has a recipe for creating springboks, and hence winning teams. Any player not in his good grace, and who refer to him as THE SNAKE – needs to accept he is not in the winning team and most probably not going to be in it with such an attitude. So like all good leaders JAKE has his vices and his results rely on them…if the boss says jump boet, and your ‘HOW HIGH’ brings home the pudding. then you better JUMP.

  • @bokbok (Comment 8) : those rumours are rife, but I’m hoping the players will realise how nice it is to actually win consistently.

  • @robdylan (Comment 11) : Hargrieves, Bekker or Kruger.

Hargrieves and Bekker a bit in no mans land, more flexible so I would go with them. Rob who would you look at in a lock-maybe Marais?

  • @BoerSeun (Comment 12) : I’d be more than happy with Hargreaves.

Bekker is an injury-prone show pony.

  • @robdylan (Comment 13) : I actually hope we lure Jan Ander Marais as he is known in France back to Black. still rate him highly as the next Danie Russow..

  • Ag man, there will always be “rumours” about players being unhappy within a certain setup. This is nothing new. There were a lot of talk about players being unhappy during the plum-days as well. I guess some of the stories had some truth to them (a-la kanko), but I believe most of it is made up by journos looking to scratch a non-existing itch.

  • Yep, this is not exactly happy news but these things happen. I’m sure we all agree that the Southern Hemisphere teams are definitely at the losing end financially, when it comes to players heading up north. Isn’t it about time rugby adopts a transfer system similar to football, where the teams start paying clubs/provinces a transfer fee.

  • @bokbok (Comment 8) : I doubt anyone who leaves for such a reason was worth having in the team anyways. What type of slapgat would pack his bags because his boss wants him to work?

  • @West Indies Cricket Board (Comment 19) : no no, because his boss wants him to win – the hard work is just the vehicle.
