Hurricanes coach Mark Hammett has announced he will stand down when his contract expires at the end of this Super Rugby season, in a sign that he doesn’t need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows.

The former Crusader has had a stormy run as head coach of the Wellington-based franchise, which his methods and approach not finding favour with either players or fans. A number of high-profile Hurricane legend, including Ma’a Nonu, Andre Hore and Piri Weepu, have left the franchise due to differences with the coach, but as with most things in life, it’s the results that have ultimately proved damning to Hammett.

The Hurricanes’ highest finish under Hammett to date has been eighth place.

“This is a decision I have made after much discussion with my family,” said Hammett. “It has not been an easy decision, but we feel the time is right for me to step aside after this season.”

  • Eish this Union seems to be in trouble, wonder whats going on behind the scenes but it doesnt seem to be a happy camp. They have bucket loads of talent but never realise that potential.

  • When he took over the fighting started. He is quite a hard headed person and alienated himself from the players. He claims he told the franchise before the season started this was his last season, but I’m pretty certain he was given one final year to prove himself which didnt happen.

But they are far from being last on the log, and are currently in second place on the NZ log..

Not sure he is doing THAT bad a job currently?

  • Pretty sure he’d make a decent assistant coach though.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 3) : I think Richard that with the Crusaders currently out of sorts and the Blues up and down, this placing is not a true reflection.

I kinda get what you are saying, but you cannot base where your team is on what others are doing.

That is like saying the Lions are only third on the SA log because the Stormers and Cheetahs have been crap so far this season?

The Canes are lying 8th having already toured SA and having only played 3 matches at home.

  • @Caratacus (Comment 5) : In fact there’s only 1 point between them at 2 or down to 2nd from the bottom.
