Lions minimise changes

Lions coach Johan Ackermann has made just a single change to his starting fifteen to face the Sharks at Ellis Park on Saturday, with Derick Minnie earning a start at open side flank against the team he played for as a loan player last year.

Minnie suffered a cheekbone fracture in the second match of the campaign but has no completed his rehabilitation and will take over from Jaco Kriel, who drops to the bench.

Ackermann has resisted the temptation to rush the likes of Athony Volminck straight back into his side after he played Vodacom Cup last week and has kept his backline the same as the unit that went down to the Crusaers. Robbie Coetzee (hooker) and Alwyn Hollenbach (centre) return to the bench in the only other changes.

Lions: 15. Andries Coetzee, 14. Deon van Rensburg, 13. Lionel Mapoe, 12. Stefan Watermeyer, 11. Courtnall Skosan, 10. Marnitz Boshoff, 9. Faf de Klerk, 8. Warren Whiteley (captain), 7. Willie Britz, 6. Derick Minnie, 5. Franco Mostert, 4. Martin Muller, 3. Julian Redelinghuys, 2. Willie Wepener, 1. Schalk van der Merwe

Substitutes: 16. Robbie Coetzee, 17. Corne Fourie, 18. Ruan Dreyer, 19. MB Lusaseni, 20. Jaco Kriel, 21. Ross Cronje, 22. Elton Jantjies, 23. Alwyn Hollenbach

  • Would have started with Kriel. Minnie will most likely be rusty after more that a month on the side lines. Not a bad team tho

  • @Mutley (Comment 1) : Kriel on the bench scares me

  • Good team.

Charl McLeod will have to keep Faf de Klerk busy, and if he can be put under pressure, the rest of the backline will suffer.

Good loose forwards though, Minnie can cause some damage, but the change should be in the favour of the Sharks..

  • This is not a bad team, no big names just a couple of players playing for pride and each other.

  • Good side, even a few good impact players off the bench. They will be tough to beat. Its how they play under pressure that will be the test

  • Hope Minnie doesn’t cause us too many headaches on the ground. We struggled against the Bulls in this department

  • @catfish (Comment 8) : at least with Minnie there Sharks can get some penalties and as they’re playing in Jozi Steyn can kick them from well inside his own half.
