Sharks player ratings v Lions

The Sharks recorded a win over the Lions on Saturday that was ultimately rather convincing, even if it took over an hour for them to finally get more than a score ahead and secure the result.

While it definitely wasn’t a vintage performance, with only a single try scored and numerous errors and transgressions halting progress, to rate it as a bad one would give no credit either to the tenacity of the Lions on the day, or to the composure and maturity that the Sharks showed in pulling it out of the back, especially after yet another early loss of a key playmaker. The team earns a rating of somewhere just south of 7/10 for this one – let’s look at the individuals.

1. Beast Mtawarira. This was a very good game from the loosehead. He appeared to have Julian Redelinghuys well under control (even despite an early penalty for scrumming in) and played an important role in ensuring possession and continuity, hitting scores of rucks and putting in some good carries. Possibly his best game of the campaign so far. 8/10
2. Bismarck du Plessis. He’s a multi-faceted player, is Bismarck and while some factors of his game shone like polished diamond, others were perhaps a little murkier. Certainly he spared the Sharks innumerable blushes with his strong breakdown technique, winning at least three good turnovers (or penalties) for his team. His set piece work was again above reproach. If we have to nitpick, we’d like to see some more work with ball in hand, perhaps as well as a little less “whining” when it comes to his handling of the referee. 8/10
3. Jannie du Plessis. That yellow card was appalling – at a time when the Sharks could little afford the momentum to shift, Jannie ensured that it did just that. Other than that moment of poor discipline, though, he had a pretty useful game. 6/10
4. Willem Alberts. A very good game from Alberts who is adapting well to the lock position. His lineout work was on par with expectation. Defensively, he again put in some very big hits, while his work with ball in hand, despite seldom making huge metres, always manages to tie up a defender or three. 7/10
5. Stephan Lewies. Some standout moments from the youngster, including a good lineout steal or two, which we’ve not seen before. He continues to impress with his athleticism and pace, even if you feel his own teammates are occasionally taken by surprise just as much as the opposition are. 6/10
6. Marcell Coetzee. An outstanding game from a man who puts in enough work for two ordinary players. If he doesn’t become a Bok starter based on this sort of showing, then I simply don’t know what more is expected of him. 8/10
7. Jean Deysel. A decent enough showing from the big flanker, but perhaps not quite enough stand-out moments to warrant a high rating. Tended to disappear at times against the Lions and could definitely have spent a bit more time either cleaning (which was needed) or carrying, because he hardly showed up in either role to any great extent. 6/10
8. Ryan Kankowski. You get the feeling we’re seeing bread and butter from this player at the moment, which is all well and good, except that what we love about him is the jam. Kanko is getting involved and putting in some decent physical work – while also keeping the error rate down – but it’s been a good while since we’ve seen any evidence of the x-factor that makes him such a special player. 6/10

9. Charl McLeod. Made a few rather rather glaring errors, admittedly many of them forced by the Lions’ breakdown spoiling tactics. That said, we’d like to see a bit more composure from such a senior player. 6/10
10. Fred Zeilinga. Looked to be chugging along quite well, even despite a missed goal-kick and one rather ill-advised long pass. Always calm and manages the game well, so we’ll hope his injury isn’t too bad. 7/10
11. JP Pietersen. A solid performance from a player who one feels is now starting to find his feet again. Some delightful interplay with Sithole down the left hand touchline – the two players seem to have a great “feel” for each other. All we need now is for him to start scoring some tries. 7/10
12. Frans Steyn. Saved the day once again, with those big goal kicks of his coming into play to break a persistent deadlock that otherwise seemed to have the Sharks baffled. I can’t say I really rate him as a top option at flyhalf, but you simply cannot doubt how influential a player he is, with big match temperament and unique skills setting him apart from all comers. 8/10
13. S’bura Sithole. Quite probably the best display from any many wearing 13 across all three conferences this weekend, which is bloody impressive given that this was only his fourth match as an outside centre. Bok selectors take note, a new contender has stormed his way into the game. 9/10
14. Odwa Ndungane. A really strong game to mark his 100th cap. You feel that opposition defences tend to focus a bit more on the obvious strike threats in the Sharks’ backline, leaving Odwa a little more room to maneuver than he would otherwise enjoy. 7/10
15. Lwazi Mvovo. A strong attacking performance from fullback, which is exactly what his coach would have wanted. In the past we’ve criticised Lwazi for not getting involved enough in the game – this move from White looks like a masterstroke in that regard. 8/10

16. Kyle Cooper. Credit for fitting 80 minutes worth of enthusiasm into 8 minutes on the park, although still not enough time to rate him on.
17. Dale Chadwick. Conceded a penalty in his first scrum, but otherwise looked the part in a Sharks pack that started to get well on top towards the end. 6/10
18. Lourens Adriaanse. Solid, without being a standout in any way. 6/10
19. Etienne Oosthuizen. Not on long enough to rate.
20. Keegan Daniel. Must admit I didn’t notice him at all in 12 minutes. 6/10
21. Stefan Ungerer. Not on long enough to rate.
22. Heimar Williams. Looked very dangerous and injected pace when taking the ball up. Steyn’s tendency to skip him perhaps limited his effectiveness on attack, but he did well on defence. 7/10
23. SP Marais. An encouraging showing indeed from a man who must be a little frustrated at finding himself on the bench. SP injected a fair bit of creativity and hlped revive a backline that looked to be running out of ideas in the second half. 7/10

  • The first game I saw Mvovo play for the Sharks, was the Sharks vs the B&I Lions. When O’Driscoll intercepted the ball and raced away but was caught from behind by this extremely fast laaitie, I turned to my friend and said that here is a Sharks legend in the making, and I’m glad he is starting to live up to that. There is not many more glorious sights in rugby than Mvovo in top form.

Jannie can only get a 3, he needs a serious attitude adjustment and I would even go as far as dropping him from the match 23 if it does not change soon.

  • Jannie should be deducted more points for poor handling – two handling errors at critical stages.

I also did not enjoy him and McLeod chirping at the ref the whole time. The Sharks need to let the captain do the talking.

  • I think with his younger boet being the captain, Jannie has gotten a bit too big for his shoes. White needs to put a stop to that now, or it is going to really cost us.

  • Jannie has lost interest and is going through the motions only, misses easy tackles,in the backline knocking on when he shouldn’t be there, penalty give aways,he must go home rather,LM is no 15 but The Great White must have a plan playing him there,he never straightens line and runs sideways ,Sharks have no descent backline at all, when FS moves to 10 its all over on attack, they all run sideways, nobody straightens and attacks the gainline,or they isolate themselves which leads to turnover ball,Sbu got turned on every attack of his, lucky for that last pilfer of his and LM try.CM what nonsense at 9,cannot do basics rite and passes to isolated players in backline ,that’s why no team tries only opportunistic tries,FS what a player, great long passes, cuts out half Lions in one move,he simply great, has pure rugby kop, pity others not on same page

  • Bissie has to watch how he handles referees on tour.
You get the feeling that they are allowing him certain freedoms of opinion because he is playing in front of his home fans but overseas they wont stand for his shit.
    Stop with the whining boet.

Also, Rob, Francois Louw will be the Bok 6 going forward. And rightly so. Particularly considering that he may be captaining the Boks if HM feels JdV isn’t playing as well as he should be.

  • I agree with everyone who said Jannie must lose points max 4 for that blatantly stupid no arm charge down (one cannot call it a tackle) then arguing with the ref about it. Did Paddy o’ Brien tell him it was ok to do this? Do you even care what your huge ego is doing to your teammates Jannie? Besides that incident, your scrummaging was not deserving of a 6 the ref doesn’t see both sides of the scrum but the camera does. Alberts deserves at least an 8 playing out of position against a top form scrum outfit like lions and still doing well. Adriaanse 7 he is solid and reliable and disciplined, sometimes these things alone are what make you stand out. F Steyn also 9/10 you cant say he saved the day and rate him less than any other player. The rest I would say is accurate.

  • @benji (Comment 6) : Mvovo played Full back and did great with good attacks from the back as well. Every ball that Sbu carried, he made meters! That is why the MOTM. And it is not just this game. McLeod gets us on the front foot and gives momentum. There were plenty opportunities for tries but bad handling let us down

  • Just my few comments…well the ones I can remember…I had lots straight after the game.
What really annoys me is how the Sharks seem to be lately thinking they are above the law and continually whinge and whine at the ref. Bismarck, Jannie and Charl the main culprits. I think their egos need to shrink and again its a sign of the team following the captains lead. MCCloed was very poor and I was calling for Ungerer from the start of the 2nd half. Alberts and Coetzee were very good. As was Lewies and Kanko (Kanko is a very closely marked man but watch closely and you will see how many times he links up play.) For me Lwazi and Sithole were joint man of the match as both were outstanding. As for the bench, Chadwick deserves a 1 if that- of his 3 scrums he gave away 2 penalties. Williams was very solid and probably deserves a start, as does Adriaanse. Oh and lastly- can somehow show Deysel how to pass the ball…anyone?

I can not agree more…..with this comment of yours and comment 3 you made.

It’s a free for all to bitch and moan to everyone that feels like it. Jannie thinks that because his brother is captain he has free reigns to say whatever whenever……started with the backchat of the ref a few weeks ago. Best he sorts his shit out…..Bismarck need to tell everyone to shut the fcuk up and play.

Charl is like a 3 year old who’s snot nose you need to wipe every 2 minutes…..really too many chiefs to little Indians.

Still think Keegs need to start Saturday, Deysel disappointing, this oak needs to learn how to pass if there is space outside him. Seems he only wants to show off his bumpcar tactics every game…..fcuk the team let me show you how many guys I can run out of my way…

Anyway we are still top…big test will come on your.

  • Although I’m not crazy about Charl impersonating a windmill at times, I saw him draw the referees attention to an indiscretion at one of the scrums when his attention was clearly elsewhere (the ref turned his head to Charl) and the Sharks were immediately awarded a penalty. I think it’s a timing thing. Charl should start learning when to do it and realise when it’s pointless.

So if criticising players for that is negative so be it I can live with that.

I just wish we could finish off some of those good positions we created for ourselves. Silly mistakes and getting frustrated with weird ref decisions makes me really nervous.

I didn’t enjoy watching this game. I’m impressed that the boys managed to push for this win. Sharks of previous years would have looked at that first half and though – what the hell are we suppose to do to take the lead. Not this team. That second half was smart rugby, not as dominant as the first, but much, much smarter.

They are not firing on all cylinders, but apart from 1 shocker vs Bulls, we have been in control of every game so far…I have a little hunch that when Kanko cuts loose in his traditional attacking way, the rest of the Sharks attack will flourish!!

Dear god what is Jake going to do when Jordaan is fit?? Sithole is continuously giving Plumtree the bird with his performances. Exceptional on the weekend. They are both so dangerous, can you afford to have either of them off the field??

  • @JD (Comment 26) : No no, not talking about the players attitude toward the ref….talking about everyone complaining about how poor the Sharks are and how they are not title contenders and how they have basically lost every game thus far, except for on the scoreboard.

  • Comment 34, posted at 14.04.14 13:51:45 by FireTheLooser Reply

  • The reason Jannie and Charl bitch and moan is because Bismarck isn’t doing his job as captain. I true leader would have told them both to keep their traps shut and made sure that he did the communication with the ref. By communication I don’t mean whining at the ref like his boet and McLeod.

Unfortunately, Bismarck doesn’t seem to have the natural leadership skills needed to read or handle a ref, stay composed or to get the players together. We seem to be playing as individuals with everyone their own captain.

What’s more worrying is that he’s been well shy of consistently good form as player since he’s taken over the captaincy. Whether these are related is a matter of opinion.

I wish that John Smit could pass on some of his expertise in dealing with refs to Bismarck: JS was a master of the art of suggestion and getting his way by getting on the good side of the ref. As much as I agree with what Bissie was arguing about I know that his approach wasn’t one that ever seems to work in terms of having a positive influence on officials.

  • After reading through all responses to date and noting the accusations of ‘negativity’ by a few, I still have to say I don’t feel that Jannie du Plessis should be rated anywhere near a 6. His handling (I counted 3 times he knocked on in situations where he could have been expected to take the pass), the issue of illegal binding on his opponents arm, and of course the backchat to the ref. There are more yellow cards to come for Dr Jannie, mark my words. These lapses are going to cost the team dearly when they happen. I say WHEN and not IF because that’s the way I see it: an accident waiting to happen unless he gets reined in soon.

  • One thing I loved about this game was that Kanko played much more loosely than we have seen this season. He would often pop up amongst the centres and he looked dangerous every time. And he hardly ever took the ball as a one off runner as we have seen in previous games. Jake is cleverly playing towards his strengths now and it bodes well for very exciting attacking rugby in the games to come!

  • @Letgo (Comment 13) : I prefer to use stats rather than just emotion to crit a player. I reviewed the game and these are my conclusions: McLoed had 1 miss pass over Fred’s head. He made 44 clear passes, 3 box kicks, 1 blocked. He made a line out steal, 2 good tackles on a huge Muller and 1 on Britz to halt their momentum but was penalized.
He pressured on Faff to kick out on full and dislodged ball at the lions scrum from Faff and Britz both. Cleaned out at breakdown twice and made a great pick up of a lost ball from our line out.and he gets a 6.

Fred had 1 miss pass over the head of Sbu, 2 missed penalties, 1 missed catch in the air. Gets a 7
Knocks to break our momentum: Jannie 2, Deysel 1, Mvovo 1, odwa 2, kanko 1, sbu 1, long ball bissie 1 lewies 1.
Steyn 1 Kick out on the full missed drops 1, missed passes 3. Gets an 8.
I do think that old unrelated crits of McLoed is seeping back without true merit.

You get my drift.

Here for business but next year I’m doing this trip to Hong Kong and overlapping with the sevens….think it’s going to be a crazy lekker party in Hong Kong. And maybe Rob we should enter a Sharksworld beer league team(sharks team?) like the Cape Town tens I understand there is a lot of other little festival tournaments..I have played in the Malasia 10’s with your boet Downy that’s back in black, Jacques Potgieter was his right hand on that tour, and he can confirm these festival tours are awesome. Also played in a few others in Langcawi, Wales and so on but the best festival tournaments are apparently Kailua lumpur, Hong Kong and Cape Town.

I am in my hotel room 00:14 in china and dreaming of happier places. There’s no place like home, there’s no place like home….any news on new lock recruit?

  • Had a interesting dish today. Sirloin steak with Tofu….sound pretty harmless. Had it loin steak before…had Tofu….so let try it. As soon as I get the dish I give it a taste and it looks and smells awesome. So as soon as I tack the second bite I tell my wife this smells and tastes like Tripe stew, being a farm boy and all. And I love afval so I get to what looks to me like sheep small intestine and I call over the waiter who says No no tofu…as soon as I eat raw onions I knew it was intestine but giving the Chinese the benefit of the doubt I finish a good meal go back to hotel and google these a many kinds of tofu traditional Chinese Tofu is PIG! Small intestine…..jokes on me bud!

  • The only real issue I have with a scrumhalf doing “The drunken spietkop”, is that you are losing ADVANTAGE. Yes, that magical thing where you basically get a mulligan to try something inventive. Kind of like a free hit in cricket. Give it a crack! But, alas it gets wasted. i would go so far as to petition the IRB into placing a sniper alongside the TMO. Just a nod from the TMO is all that is needed to shoot the player wasting ADVANTAGE in the face.( With a beanbag or something, of coarse.) Yes, kicking away turnover ball is not my favorite thing.
