Jake White has named a 27-man squad for the Cell C Sharks overseas tour, comprising matches against the Rebels, Brumbies, Crusaders and Blues.

White has gone for a 15-12 split between forwards and backs – an interesting choice which leaves him short of a third hooker in the tour party, although Wiehahn Herbst has been included as a fifth prop.

Tera Mtembu joins Odwa Ndungane, Fred Zeilinga and Cobus Reinach in being named as members of the group, despite battling with fitness concerns. The feeling is that the quartet will recover sufficiently to play a role on tour. Of those to see recent match day action, only Stefan Ungerer and Jaco van Tonder miss out, although both must surely be on standby given the number of injuries still in the system.

Sharks tour squad:

Props (5): Beast Mtawarira, Dale Chadwick, Jannie du Plessis, Lourens Adriaanse, Wiehahn Herbst
Hookers (2): Bismarck du Plessis, Kyle Cooper
Locks (3): Willem Alberts, Stephan Lewies, Etienne Oosthuizen
Loose forwards (5): Marcell Coetzee, Keegan Daniel, Jean Deysel, Tera Mtembu, Ryan Kankowski
Scrumhalves (2): Charl McLeod, Cobus Reinach
Flyhalves (2): Fred Zeilinga, Tim Swiel
Centres (4): Frans Steyn, Paul Jordaan, Heimar Williams, S’bura Sithole
Outside backs (4): JP Pietersen, Odwa Ndungane, SP Marais, Lwazi Mvovo

  • Heimar is in!! Happy days! But looking quickly I can’t see who was left out? Hadebe?

  • @Another Nick (Comment 1) :

Hadebe and Rob had a sixth prop replacement, if I’m not mistaken. Therefore Keegan and Tera can tour, instead of just one of them, as well as Heimar.

Good squad this. Hope the boys with injuries recover soon.

  • @Maria Delport (Comment 2) : no, I have Thomas du Toit as fifth prop… the only real change to what I put forward is Herbst for du Toit, Mtembu for Marais and then Williams included instead of a spare hooker.

Very risky to tour without a spare hooker.

  • @Maria Delport (Comment 2) : I’m happy with this squad. Also interesting to see Wors there.. Guess he will be back-up if Jannie or Lourens pick up an injury. Or maybe when we get to see some rotation within the squad.

  • Strong Squad. Only two hookers ?
My favourite topic only two locks and a flank/lock. I guess Jean can play lock if he has to. Stephan has really played well but he is the only 5 in the squad. Willem looks tired and nobody seems to be convinced by Jake’s liability boy Etienne. How , who and when will Willem and Stephan be rested? High risk decision! What is Peet’s future ?

  • Like the look of this squad and lets hope that those that are still on the road to recovery heal in time to make a meaningful contribution on tour, and also that no more injuries are picked up in tomorrow’s game!

  • @Observer (Comment 5) : I’ve seen a few people mention that Alberts looks tired, but I don’t see it. Remember, he is in a different position where you won’t see him as often.

  • @Observer (Comment 5) : I am starting to lose count how many articles you have posted in that have just been negative Oosthuizen comments, we get it you don’t like the guy….

  • @robdylan (Comment 7) : Good Observation ! Do you agree with the risk, depth and rotation problem with locks ? especially 5 lock ?

  • @Seth101 (Comment 9) : Opinion based on what I have seen and compared to a good player like Peet. My opinion stands 😆

  • Comment 11, posted at 24.04.14 13:45:52 by Observer Reply

  • @Observer (Comment 10) : no, not at all…. I think Jake is being somewhat remiss in overlooking Marais and even Wentzel, who could do a great job as a stopgap.

Am I going to turn it into a personal crusade against Oosthuizen, though? No.

I think you’d find that your views regarding the usage of lock would find a lot more support if they weren’t always prefaced with an ad hominem attack against a particular player.

  • Freedom of expression on your site ? 😀 Point taken but a bit frustrated because other players get opportunities, and a guy like Peet(In a playing position where we are at risk) out of the mix. The risk remains however you phrase it! 😡

  • @Observer (Comment 13) : Do I agree that Oosthuizen is getting preferential treatment? Yes. Do I agree that there are good locks who should be given chances? Yes. But I don’t agree with a continues barrage of insult against a single player, the problem is not his, and he has hardly been given enough time to show if what Jake sees in him is warranted.

  • With only being able to name 27 players JW cant afford the luxury of taking too much depth in each position, hence no 3 hookers etc. I can bet you the next in line are being told to be packed and ready at a moments notice however.

  • I am mostly worried about the one and a half scrumhalves in the squad (seeing as Reinach is still officially injured).

Someone mentioned that Fred can deputize at scrumhalf?

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 16) : he’s played scrumhalf at age-group level.

Less worried about a third 9 than I am about a third hooker.

  • Squad with minimal disruption to the Vodacom Cup side, who themselves have a job to do.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 18) : still a tough one for them…

    both their flyhalves gone.

    their starting tighthead gone.

plus this week makes 4 games in the SR 23 for Ungerer, which rules him out for the VC knockouts.

  • @robdylan (Comment 17) : the lack of a third hooker is a huge concern, unless maybe one of the props can play as reserve hooker if a late injury happens ? Just hope and pray for no injuries to the two touring hookers!!

  • I personally rate oosthuizen … hes played off the bench which has not favored him but he is an exeptionally strong scrummager and he hits a lot of rucks. Locks that dont give away penalties in the loose are not competing for the ball :p
