The Sharks have surrendered their proud home record, succumbing to an embarrassing 18-34 defeat at the hands of the Highlanders.
Late changes ahead of kick-off robbed the home side captain Bismarck du Plessis and vice captain Jean Deysel and the rejigged side, despite a brave opening quarter, never really recovered from this disruption.
An early try to Lwazi Mvovo was disallowed due to a technical indescretion not spotted by anyone bar referee Jaco Peyper and that seemed to take the wind firmly out of the Sharks’ sails, with the Highlanders upping the tempo and profiting from some poorly directed kicks to score through Richard Buckman down the right hand side. Further touchdowns to Aaron Smith and Shane Christie – the latter off a textbook lineout drive – followed, leaving the Sharks reeling at 24-12 down by half time. Time Swiel succeeded with four penalties during the opening forty, but missed two other reasonably simple attempts.
There was a brief ray of light in the second period, as Swiel’s boot came into play twice more to narrow the gap to just six. Highlanders lock forward Joe Wheeler was sinbinned just before the second of those and one felt the momentum may have swung. Poor execution from the Sharks and shocking ball retention in contact ensured that Wheeler’s time in the cooler cost no further points, with Highlanders centre Malakai Fekitoa mesmerising would-be defenders to weave through from 50m out for the bonus point try with 10 minutes to play.
The dejected Sharks had no answer and will now board a plane bound for Melbourne short on fit players, but shorter still on ideas.
Their buffer at the top of the log has now been reduced to a single point, with four tough away fixtures on the table.
Scores:
Sharks (18). Penalties Tim Swiel (6).
Highlanders (34). Tries Richard Buckman, Aaron Smith, Shane Christie, Malakai Fekitoa. Conversions Lima Sopoaga (4). Penalties Sopoaga (2)

Sies
Rob I applaud you for having the strength to keep up the blog!
No problem. Don’t worry, be happy. Where’s my Prozac?
I would suggest that we play touch rugby on the beach every day of the tour. That way we can start with basic handling again. Aiy!!!
How does a change to your hooker and a flank turn into the worst defensive effort of the year? The wheels coming off is only a surprise to some.
Disgusting
@KILLER SHARK (Comment 4) : Don’t be ridiculous. We’re working on defense.
That was terrible to watch, really terrible.
We looked tired, and several players looked like their minds were somewhere else.
I think we missed a trick at 15-24, with the Highlanders player in the bin. The maul was going well, and we might have been able to make the most of the numerical advantage. It looked like our most likely way to score, given the numerous amount of handling errors. Plus Peyper’s calls were starting to go our way at that moment.
Inability to score when Wheeler was in the bin turned it in their favour. I think we botched two very decent try scoring opportunities in that period (apart from not taking the above maul option)
Steyn was poor on attack, only kicked or tried the long skip pass.
The Swiel-SP mix up (and SP barking at Tim after that!), Jannie’s coughing up of the ball in a maul on their 22, were hair tearing moments.
Only good thing from the game- Franco will remember his first S15 scrum very well!
What does Jake do? Play full strength team against the Rebels and concede the Brumbies and Saders games? Or play a fringe team against Rebels, full strength against Brumbies (because it’s a practical eight pointer?).
Sayonora JP. Heineke Meyer just scratched you off the list.
I cannot believe the Sharks still did a victory lap after that, what a joke.
Chin up boys. The season ain’t done yet.
Surely Jake can’t persist with Grim Swiel anymore. Although Dunce Steyn is not much better at 10.
@Seth101 (Comment 10) : What?? That’s an insult to the poor folks who paid money to be served up with total pig swiel.
Let’s see what Cobus and Fred can do for us on tour. Ndungane will be a welcome return. The pack is fine, Kanko due back in.
Covering shit with rose petals doesnt change the fact it is still shit.
A few people were telling us last week the Sharks were ready to step up a gear and reveal “plan B” on tour. They also said you couldn’t “support” a team by highlighting concerns. That’s not what “fans” do, apparently. What do they say now? JD?
@The Great Couch Shark (Comment 13) : They have done it every game, only difference is they won all of the games before. I left before they got round to me but they were getting a lot of boos, from the people who bothered to wait for them. Swiel is honest pathetic.
@vanmartin (Comment 11) : Current team form is a big concern tho. At this rate you would be hard pressed to pick any wins on tour.
@Feather (Comment 16) : No we said we hoped for that, we also said don’t find so much wrong with a team who is winning. Today the lost, so crap on them as much as you want.
early burnout? peaked already? be lucky if we are top 6 still after touring.
@The Great Couch Shark (Comment 18) : agreed, if they play like they have over the past month they will return 0 from 4. Getting drubbed by the Highlanders at home is embarrassing. And that’s not even taking into account we were the top of the log team. I foresee a lot of pain on tour. Lots of naivety and blind faith above, too.
@Feather (Comment 21) : do you count that they were propping up the NZ conference prior to this?
@vanmartin (Comment 11) : aeems to me only one or two of us is thinking that the season is not over. Some of these super supporters seems to think the season is done Sharks will not win again this year, forget about Super rugby and start to build for the Currie cup.
@Feather (Comment 16) : there’s a very big difference to highlighting concerns and consistently bitching about how kak the team is. I always agreed the team is not perfect but even in a poor performance like tonight there’s still some good points as well. So why just hammer on the bad points all the time. No body is forcing any one to watch the Sharks on TV or at the tank, it’s your own choice.
@Seth101 (Comment 10) : @The Great Couch Shark (Comment 13) : it’s not a victory lap it’s call going round to thank the supporters who turned up at the game.
The handling tonight doesnt worry me too much. The car was covered in a thick layer of dew at 6pm tonight. It must have felt like playing rugby with a bar of soap.
To all the people bitchimg about bismarks captaincy I give you mccloud. Who wants bismark back?
And lastly … did pieterson catch a ball at all tonight?
Goodnight all … time for a drink
@Feather (Comment 21) : I will always have blind faith that they will get better and the reason for it is that even in a bad game like tonight they stlill created at least three chances to score tries but poor communication and handling let them down.
@JD (Comment 24) : when people are disappointed they going to bitch, thats life, and tonite was a big disappointment and yes its only our second loss and all is not yet doom and gloom, but what is probably more worrying for me is that our play has been getting progressively worse the last few games with no real indication that anything was being done to stop that and turn it around…now if there was a plan to do this it sure hasnt come to the fore and we need to address it now before its too late.
@byron (Comment 26) : enjoy it.
@SharkED (Comment 28) : one thing everyone seems to forget is that it’s the first season with JW as coach. Everything is new and needs to settle, while injuries is also not helping the team to settle. Im sure JW, JS and the rest of the management team is not patting each other on the back for the stellar season, they’re trying their best to change it before it’s to late.
@JD (Comment 30) :Look I doubt we cud play that badly again (they better not prove me wrong there lol) but often, and especially with the sharks, we tend to struggle to move on from such games…I’m hoping that’s not the case this season, we have to bounce back from this and that’s going to be the true test of character for all…
I found a positive … no more pyper for a while :p
@byron (Comment 32) : haha…ill take that thanks
The curse of the 100th cap struck again 😡 😥 That was horrible to watch. Watching them play it seemed like there were no energy in the team and they were just going through the motions.
because its gonna be a tough tour..
Our handling was atrocious and the kicking out of hand was well – poor to say the least. And why the hell kick so much when you need to score tries to even get close to a win???
My issue I have with the backline is that by the time our centres get the ball the whole highlander backline was on them. Are we too slow or are they just too quick for us? It seems like there is no creativity in the backs – hence the few number of tries we score.
Anyway I will still back the boys but bloody hell I hope they pull finger in the next game
Anyway one positive is that the long weekend can only get better!!
@byron (Comment 32) : hahaha nice one!
@RedSharkUtd82 (Comment 34) : changes takes time to work properly, just ask the folks at Man United.
@RedSharkUtd82 (Comment 34) : the shocking part is that we had a prelude to this so called game plan or lack lustre style in the Sharks XV game. Jake needs to prove that he is a strategic coach or his time is over pretty soon.
@JD (Comment 36) : Agreed. Eish dont get me started on that lol – being a Utd supporter and all.
@KILLER SHARK (Comment 37) : I didn’t see the Shark XV game but that doesn’t sound good.
@RedSharkUtd82 (Comment 38) : I know exactly how you feel, the less said about United the better.
@RedSharkUtd82 (Comment 39) : boet trust me it was bad………. lets hope both Sharks teams perform better in the weeks to come.
Apart from Marcell and Beast I don’t feel any players deserve much in terms of player ratings… 😳
Someone mentioned this already…The fact that Steyn went for a drop goal from 40m out in centre field tells the story!! It is the mindset that is the problem?? why go for 3 points when you are guaranteed at the shot at 3 points already – BE AMBITIOUS!!!
The mindset is conservative, and go ask the Stormers how successful that mindset turns out in the end??!!
Apparently the Sharks have signed on for an ad campaign to illustrate Nick Mallett’s complaints about SA ball skills and general attacking play.
In an interview after the game Mallett said, “As you can see the Sharks have taken on the role of the ‘before picture’, showing us what not to do on attack! I have yet to find a suitable South African team to portray the ‘after picture’. I may need more time than expected!!”
sharks shot their wad!
👿
Very proud of the lads … 😉
@Hertford Highlander (Comment 46) : congratulations with your team they were very good tonight and deserved the win.
@pienaar111 (Comment 44) : yes and for me Nick is the before picture of an asshole operation.
@RedSharkUtd82 (Comment 39) : The Sharks XV game was a carbon copy of the SR game but better.
It is not for a lack of our boys wanting to play, there is just no team. No cohesion. It has been my bitch bite for 2 months now. Some guys really tried but the ball is lost in transit.
Where is this experienced kopdokter that was spoken about in pre season?
And WTF happens on a Friday at the Sharks that we loose players before a game? Is there a EFC try-out or a secret basement fight club at the stadium? WTF?
Boy am I glad the tsietas decided to kick every ball they got last week….with their attacking rugby we would have had this talk last Saturday already.
The little I saw of Ungerer, he seems to have very quick service at the base of the ruck….we looked much improved when he came on.
Same with Sharks VX, when Venter came on to replace the starting nine, the game went pear shaped.
And what’s up with these last second injuries?!
My gut did tell me the sharks might bin this game, but I didn’t listen. Signs were all there against cheetahs and snoil. There is a grim attitude around the team, much like the stormers in recent years. Rugby is still meant to be fun guys, they had it in the CC last year… Hope they re-capture that on tour.
Any update on who is getting on the plane and who isn’t?
@RedSharkUtd82 (Comment 34) : our game is too slow. Don’t know how Lambie and to a certain extent Fred are able to make that backline work.
Someone needs to be man enough to ask Brendon for help. The team is over coached and seems to lack X players. Sergeal Petersen needs to be made a Shark with immediate effect. We need to act quickly before one of the other big unions grab him. That boy is the future at 14 and offers so much with ball in hand. The type of X factor players we need to be targeting.
@GreatSharksays (Comment 54) : You joking right? Because tiny fast wings totally worked for the stormers…. I never have and never will be a fan of tiny wingers. Look at all the good NZ wings, all of them are huge and fast. And Jake seems to agree, bringing in Chavanga and starting to use the likes of Sbura, big and fast wins rugby. Did you see our wing score against the kings (I forget his name) ran 25m, handed off a lock and carried a flank over the line to score. You forget how good JPP has been in the last few years, he has one bad game and its tickets? Hes easily got 5 years left in him both for the Sharks and for the Boks.
@Seth101 (Comment 19) : Problem is they were winning really ugly and showed a lack of try scoring ability as well as inclination. This is what was a concern, and the Sharks fans (well some of them) were happy to fob such criticism off with a “So what, we top the log, and as long as we win, who cares is it’s pretty!” That is what was wrong, because we saw with the Stormers, that you won’t win the trophy based mainly on defence.
@KingCheetah (Comment 56) :
“because we saw with the Stormers, that you won’t win the trophy based mainly on defence”
Typical of the flawed argument being bandied about by some at the moment. And to be fair, perhaps forgivable in a fan who’s staple diet has been helter-skelter festival rugby for a long time.
Why use the Stormers only as a comparison? Was the Bulls’ style much different over the last few years? White’s 2007 Boks – totally different as well, right? Convincingly rolled into the Final did they?
You know what the difference was? Execution. And winning. And thats fair enough. Read through the archives – I have given the Bulls fans plenty of flack, but I have never denied my admiration of the ruthless Bulls displays when they have been on their game. Their pedigree speaks for itself.
Oh, and lets put away the hoary old chestnut of try-scoring ability; the issue many aesthete fans have is not really about scoring tries – but whether they are “constructed” or “opportunistic”. Last I checked – both give you 5 points.
@KingCheetah (Comment 56) :
Really like your comment…..because that is my feeling as well.
The shit rugby is covered up by the who cares if you keep winning comments.
And please it’s my right to complain……and I am not a doom prophet. Biggest load of shit I have seen for a while, or not I see this shit every week with the Sharks.
I know a very nice Afrikaans word that rhymes with Swiel…..
Okay, so its the morning after… Last night I was livid to put it mildly, it was horrible to be around me after that game. But I’m calm now and even laughing again lol. So we stuffed up but all is not lost, best it happens now so we can wake up then this crap happening in the playoffs anyway sharks for life no matter what. Any news on injury updates? They should have an indication as to go gets on that plane later today with them right?
Hopefully they’ll take this as a massive wake up call and buckle down and get working. We have lost 2 games and everyone else has lost 3 or more except the Brambles who also on 2 losses- this is not the end of the competition by any means. We still have the biggest points difference which could help at the end.Vasbyt manne!!
@Hertford Highlander (Comment 46) : You should be, they were great.
Congrats.
@Stiko85 (Comment 59) : I am normally down after a loss, I was not last night and nor am I now. I dont know why…
Off topic: Henry Immelman, 18yr old Grey-student can nail 60m plus penalties without help from the wind. According to his kicking coach, Albert Keuris, he nailed a 68m monster in training and has uploaded a video on Facebook 😎
At least we cannot blame the humidity for all the dropped balls. The conditions did not affect the Highlanders at all.
Who is the official backline coach of the Sharks, because when I look at the coaching box all I see is Jake plus two forwards coaches.
@Son Of Mayhem (Comment 63) : they are going to have to start making rugby fields longer… making them wider might be a good idea too – rugby union has become too defence orientated. The extra space could help.
I am normally pretty disappointed after any Sharks loss but the writing was on the wall for any objective person before yesterday evening so I’m not that surprised. The last month has been like watching a car crash about to happen in slow motion. Highly disappointing Jake hasn’t been able to see it, adapt, and stop the rot. This game was like that 4-0 try thumping at home by the Brumbies last year.
SOS call to Eddie Jones? Brendan Venter?
@Son Of Mayhem (Comment 63) : He should enroll for the NFL 😈
@Bokhoring (Comment 64) : Not sure, but I know the last one won the Community Cup with the unfancied Impala Rugby Club from Rustenburg.
Congrats Hugh.
@Big Fish (Comment 57) : Don’t spoil the fun with rationality.
@KILLER SHARK (Comment 49) : my point exactly -clandestine changes minutes before a game? old school tactics?
I was impressed with Oosthuizen. Felt we lost a little grunt when he went off.
@Southern_Shark (Comment 70) : yes. One of few (almost) bright points for me.
Also really enjoyed Chadwick’s break – pity he passed the ball to one of them.
something I’ve just realised…. Jake named a leadership group of 4 at the start of the season.
Last night was the first time we played without any of those 4 players in the squad.
@robdylan (Comment 72) : noticed that as well last night. At one point I was frantically tryna see whose the captain cause there was no bissie, jean, odwa or lambie on the field I only noticed charl was captain when the pyper called both the captains over for a word. I would have expected daniel-son to take over the reins as the most obvious choice.
What I still need to understand from stupid SA sides is why our locks don’t do the same as some locks in NZ and Auz when it comes to scrums, their locks have both knees on the ground until after the hit, this ensures that their scrums are much lower than our scrums and hence neutralise our dominance. Think this trick happened back in the RWC against Auz, 3 years later we still haven’t caught on.
@Seth101 (Comment 55) : Maybe when you get to Seth402 you’ll understand. Google what Brendan Venter said about small talented wings….it went something like this…coaches in SA need to start coaching and not look at size when selecting wings. SA is blessed with black talented wings that have the ability to turn a game upside down. Our coaches need to coach any weaknesses that are there and develop gameplans that best get the maximum value out of these gifts. This is not NZ and we don’t have big fast wings with X factor. Paul Jordaan is not big, yes he is the strongest thing out there but he is not big. Would you have made the same comment if I had said Paul must move to wing? This country had a centre called Robert Ebersohn, best thing out there, we also had Brent Russel, another player that could turn a game upside down…they had to go overseas cause their talents were not appreciated here. I agree with Brenden Venter, we are blessed with these type of players, coaches need to start coaching so that we get the best out of them. Guys like Kolbe and Sergeal can’t be wasted. My 2 cents, us as fans need to start being open minded, how is our game meant to evolve? The AB’s, the best team in the world has evolved their game. They used to pick the quick Fijian wings that could not catch high balls, they now pick the likes of KJ, Ben Smith on the wing, where’s the weakness now? Next time you have an opportunity, please watch our 7’s side. The talent that is there is amazing, and guess what, they are small and still beat NZ with their big fast players. Our coaches should surely surely start looking at those players and figuring out games plans to best utilise those skills. Enough with lecture…..
@robdylan (Comment 71) : Dale has improved a lot.
@Southern_Shark (Comment 76) : must agree with you, Dale is really having a good year. He’s strong in the scrums and really involved in the loose stuff. Huge improvement over last year.
@RedSharkUtd82 (Comment 38) : at least Man United gave us something to smile about this weekend, thanks mainly to Sir Giggs!!!!
@JD (Comment 78) : Thank you Man U. Still haunted by our game on Friday. Must say, it’s not only the team that was humbled but I am also humbled by that defeat. All my arrogance is out the window. Made bets with mates and colleagues that the Sharks were going to win SR2014. I need to find a way to get out of those bets whilst the Sharks are still top of the log else I’ll be a couple of thousands out of pocket.
@Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 61) : 😉
Christo Buchner mirrors exactly what some of us think:
@JD (Comment 48) : haha maybe so…but Mallett remains the best coach we have had in the modern era, bar Kitch Kristie.
He produced beautiful rugby with the boks back then. we racked up the points and the tries with the best Bok flyhalf of the modern era.
His fatal error was in player management (ie. Teichman saga). What he failed to realize was that if he had waited until Skinstad was fit and on form he would have replaced Teichman in any case and no one would have kicked up a fuss!!!
If we could match Mallett’s vision and tactics to Jake White’s player management….YES BABY we would be invincible!!
@rhineshark (Comment 81) : Pretty scathing criticism.
But called for.
Sometimes it’s the only way to shake oneself out of a reverie, in other words, to pull heads out of arses. I am hoping for a massive and sustained effort from the team to answer the criticism and dispel the creeping rot. If not, there is a very real risk the Sharks may not even make the play offs.
@Feather (Comment 83) : Agree with you. We’ve been getting progressively worse, since our loss to the Bulls. The shambles against the Highlanders was inevitable. I want to believe that we’ll be able to turn it around, but I just can’t see it.
@pienaar111 (Comment 82) : yes he was good until his favouritism cost him.
@rhineshark (Comment 81) : I agree. The most participants on this site blogged and saw all of these warning signs. How is it that the coaching team did not pay attention to these obvious warning signs? We can only be competitive once we become a team. I am afraid JW is unable to do that. I hope John can convert us into a unit before this weekend.
@KILLER SHARK (Comment 86) : If you point out concerns you are deemed not loyal to the Sharks or you’re a person that is negative and just likes to complain. Guys are over-coached, I only remember 1 maybe 2 quick taps from a penalty, how do we expected to catch the opposition off guard?
@KILLER SHARK (Comment 86) : @GreatSharksays (Comment 87) : I agree and you have to blow smoke up rubbish asses ,stomach kak dished up as rugby, others have said it before,the biggest problem is 15 players playing as individuals,its almost as if they train in isolation and only meet on matchday on the pitch,how the hell do you fix that,and they get paid for this,professionals hey?
@Southern_Shark (Comment 76) : @robdylan (Comment 71) : really now,I’ve neva eva
@pienaar111 (Comment 82) : “Mallet the best coach we have had in the modern era”….based on what exactly?
Both White and PdV achieved more than him. Mallet took Carel DuP’s team and white-washed the tri-nations, then slowly went through the typical SA downward spiral.
White took over the worst Bok team in history, from kamp staaldraad to instantly turn them into tri-nation winners. He ultimately built them into the wc winning Boks.
PdV white-washed the ab’s 3-zip, and series victory over the B&I lions with his inherited team.
We do not have technically astute backline coaches in SA…neither Mallet, nor White, nor PdV nor HM had, or ever will have the skills to turn that around.
White is however probably the only coach in SA and from SA that has the vision to eventually identify his shortcomings and get the correct specialist coach in.
@FireTheLooser (Comment 90) : ja boet Mallet is the best ever unbeatable stopped being the Bok coach cause he was board not cause he lost 10 of his last 20 odd tests without Teichmann there to keep the team together.
@JD (Comment 91) : Mallet,board ? WC trophy ?
@benji (Comment 92) : he had a chance and failed! !!!
Swiel didn’t do to badly for a youngster.
He just need some work with a kicking coach. Change the jerky leg swing to something a little more easy and controlled.
And loose the funky arm movements in the run up. The only possible outcome from those are that people will think you’re a Cooper class A-hole. 😉
@fyndraai (Comment 94) : LOL now you got me curious did not check his arm movements before but will be looking for it next time.
@fyndraai (Comment 94) : you have to be joking surely,in TS wildest dreams he wishes he was half of QC,he is only Vodacom Cup material,and sometimes you can coach kicking 24/7 but just like Bambie ,TS is not a kicker,proper examples are Fred Z,JLP and Marnitz B,just watch these gents and you will see why
@fyndraai (Comment 94) : @JD (Comment 95) : He has like a funny little jog-in-place move before he kicks the ball – arms pumping and everything….looks very strange.
In case anyone’s forgotten what good rugby looks like, check out the Saracens tries in their demolishing of Clermont:
http://www.rugbydump.com/
I’m trying to figure out, whether/how exactly the attempted unified playing style for SA is responsible for the poor rugby quality currently being dished up by SA teams?
Or are the teams merely going through this year’s growing pains of implementing this style, with the fruit of their labors coming to fruition in 2015?
@FireTheLooser (Comment 99) : The SA players in the Heineken Cup don’t seem to have any problems, so you could be right.
Schalk Brits has better hands and vision than most of the SA backline players in Super Rugby. Neil de Kock is the best SA scrummie by a country mile. Jacques Burger has developed into a high quality flank. The list goes on…
@rhineshark (Comment 100) : yes the SA players looking good over there, Burden even starting for Toulon and looking good.
@JD (Comment 101) : I can’t wait for the Sarries vs Toulon final. It’s going to be epic!
@rhineshark (Comment 102) : that’s going to be a HUGE game!!!! Can’t wait for 24 May!!!!!!
@JD (Comment 78) : Yeah thank goodness for that – made the drinks at the Keg taste sooo much better lol
@KILLER SHARK (Comment 49) : Yoh it can only get better from here I’m sure 😉
@RedSharkUtd82 (Comment 104) : looked impressive like the team of old, hope they keep Giggs as Manager really rate the guy.
@rhineshark (Comment 98) : Brenden Venter is still involved with them.
Pity he’s not at the Sharks anymore!!!!
@GreatSharksays (Comment 107) : ‘nuff said…
@JD (Comment 106) : Don’t think it will be as Manager but he will feature in some sort of capacity Im sure.. He’s a Legend for sure 😉
@RedSharkUtd82 (Comment 110) : yes a Legend for sure!!!! Maybe get Ole Gunner Solskjaer as manager?!?!?!?!
