  • Last game before we tour. Against a team we usually beat. Late withdrawals. Keegan’s milestone 100th game. I have a very bad feeling about this game which I cannot shake. I hope I am wrong.

  • The stat that explains what is wrong with the Sharks was shown before the game – an average of 18 turnovers conceded per game. But it seems we are trying to beat that at the moment.

Highlanders are playing nice rugby though – every time they get into the 22 they score a try.

  • That drop goal attempt from Steyn tells the whole story. We had a penalty advantage in the middle of the field already. Go for the bloody try! If we don’t break through then we are coming back for the shot at goal anyway. Makes no sense going for the drop in that situation. Mindset is the big problem here..

Yes their are mitigating factors, with regards to withdrawls of senior players, but still the Sharks persisted with hoofing the ball downfield, into the gleeful hands of Fekitoa and Smith. Not the result the Sharks needed prior to touring! Good luck on tour Sharks!

  • @Big Fish (Comment 181) : All is not lost Bud, but the warning signs have been there for some time now. If the Sharks continue to battle to score tries this problem will come back and bite the Sharks on the tailfin!! When faced with a lucky try against them, and boom they have to chase the game, and penalties aren’t going to suffice! Kicking the ball down the throats of teams with players able to punish, is going to end badly for the Sharks.

  • @JD (Comment 183) : And that fixes the problem?? The Sharks are Stormersque in their approach!! If you are 16 points down, and still persist with kicking the ball away, then you are heading for disaster. Sharks have the best squad available, and have the best chance of a maiden S15 win ever! But they are playing a dour low risk gameplan, that is backfiring!

  • @KingCheetah (Comment 191) : I don’t think the problem is with the plan, but the kicking (and chase) has been poor. The Highlanders kicked and chased a lot better.

Big problem is that when the Sharks do get into the oppo 22, they just cannot hang onto the ball.

But I do agree with you – towards the end of the game 16 points down, what is the point of just hoofing every ball down field.

  • @JD (Comment 189) : You have to accept that The Sharks also benefitted from a run of home matches, in a season when away wins have been rare. The expectation was created that the Sharks would be the sole hope for a SA win, but the signs have been around that the low risk gameplan could backfire sometime. The very same thing the Stormers were lambasted for last year, wa sthe mindset of as long as we are winning, things will come right when needed. You can’t change a mindset so quickly!

  • @KingCheetah (Comment 191) : no it does not fix the problems but it does give the Sharks a bit of time to fix it. Every thing is not honey and roses but it is not total doom and gloom like all seems to think.

  • @Ben (Comment 199) : I know there’s other teams than SA teams but to get into the playoffs Sharks only needs to finish top in SA. I’d like the Sharks to finish on top of the overall log but getting into playoffs by topping SA will also do.

  • @uShaka (Comment 202) : take it you have a very short memory. The answer is a look at where the Sharks ended last season, way worse than this year.

  • @KingCheetah (Comment 200) : my main problem is the the Sharks create chances to score tries but they seem to find a way to stuff it up. That’s why I also believe it will get better. If they did not create any chances I would have also been all doom and gloom.

  • @Son Of Mayhem (Comment 205) : My gripe is not that we lost but that for the last 3 games our overall team form has been diabolically poor. We ground out two wins against weaker opposition but sooner or later our poor form would become obvious. I honestly don’t know how Jake is going to reverse the shite handling skills, non-existent attack and poor ball retention in a few weeks. The rot has set in.

  • @Gerhardt (Comment 194) : same applies for the team as well. Just give them a break. They’ve had injuries and disruptions but yet if they struggle all is doom and gloom. Give some of the new players time to settle and injured players to return then we can talk again.

  • Can’t say I didn’t see this coming (see comment number 1). Highly disappointing and frustrating. This is not a champion team.

  • @JD (Comment 204) : I was referring to the current crop of NZ super rugby coaches, I don’t think The Sharks were ever as fit as the NZ players are this year, Plum had to conform to our way of doing things. I admire your optimism but we can’t afford to lose it in the final again. Today we just didn’t look like a genuine title contender.

  • @uShaka (Comment 210) : no tonight was a bad night, very bad indeed but also we need to remember a lot of things has changed at the Sharks during the last 12 months and everyone and everything needs to settle. Sharks are creating chances it’s just the finishing of those chances that’s missing (admitted for most of the season). Top players and top coaches = things must get better.
