Sharks break SA overseas duck

The Cell C Sharks have recorded a 22-16 win over the Melbourne Rebels, becoming the first South African side to win a tour match in the 2014 season.

A scrappy performance needed a breakout try – eventually scored by JP Pietersen – to finally give the Sharks the buffer they needed. Other than that, it was once again the unerring goal-kicking of Frans Steyn that secured a win, despite a poor and scrappy overall performance.

Referee Andrew Lees got on the visitors’ wrong side early on, as a clear penalty try was not awarded in the opening minutes. Rebels flyhalf Bryce Hegarty intentionally knocked the ball onto touch in goal, thus preventing Lwazi Mvovo from scoring, but the referee awarded a penalty only. It was the first of a number of strange calls on the night.

Jason Woodward got the hosts on the board first, with a penalty that was soon canceled out by Steyn. The sides continue to trade blows, with Lees penalising the home team more often than the visitors, who took a handy 15-6 lead into the break. A quiet start to the second half ensued, before Woodward brought his side back into matters with his third penalty.

Not looking like scoring, the Sharks finally burst into life with about a quarter of the match to play, as a turnover ball deep in their 22 was spun through the hands of Frans Steyn to Lwazi Mvovo. The fullback’s pace created the necessary opening down the left hand flank, with Pietersen on hand to take the inside pass and canter in under the posts. Steyn’s sixth good kick of the night took his side out to a commanding 22-9 lead.

Lees, however, was not done, seeing fit to award a try to Rebels hooker Pat Leafa despite the Sharks clearly believing play was off. In a highly familiar move, the referee allowed the Sharks captain to talk to his men, but waved play on regardless. Adding injury to insult, Hegarty did not appear to correctly tap the ball before spinning a suspiciously flat pass out to Leafa.

A tense final ten minutes ensued, with the Sharks’ defence proving equal to wave after wave of frantic attack from the Rebels.

Scores:
Rebels (16): Try Pat Leafa. Conversion Jason Woodward. Penalties Woodward (3).
Sharks (22): Try JP Pietersen. Conversion Frans Steyn. Penalties Steyn (5).

  • 4 points on the overseas tour is gold. Good to see the boys yet to put some plays together – execution still needs work though.

I hope the doom and gloom is down a notch this weekend.

  • There was a 14 point swing in that game……the penalty try that wasn’t given and the rebels try that shouldn’t have been allowed. On that it was a decent performance.

  • An away win is all that counts but I really hope Frans isn’t the 10 for the rest of the tour. He isn’t a fly halfs arsehole. I know why he was chosen but lets hope Fred is ready to start next week.

And how the hell is Heimar Williams in this Sharks squad ahead of Whitehead.

Not super rugby championship material im afraid. Not yet.

  • Disappointed by the basic ball skills as we showed far more promise on attack today.

Was it just me or were the Rebels given a phenomenal amount of leeway for skew throw ins at lineout time?

As far as the denied try.

“A penalty try must be awarded if the offence prevents a try that would probably otherwise have been scored. A player who prevents a try being scored through foul play must either be cautioned and temporarily suspended or sent off.”

All Mvovo had to do was catch and fall down. How was that not a probable try? Furthermore no caution or card for a deliberate knock down in the red zone?

Talk about bad calls, I would have gone against Keegan in the final play. That was clearly a ruck by the time he reached in to get his hands on the ball, but the ref had been blowing it like that all match by then, so good on Keegan for playing to the ref.

Agree 100%. Super impressed with Heimar. He didn’t get the ball until the second half, that you have to blame the guy on his inside for, but the few good passes and even loose balls that he picked up, he played a really smart and good game.

I would consider playing him and Zeilinga for the next game. Seriously consider. Steyn needs a break, Zeilinga is a solid kicker. The Brumbies won’t be expecting it. Worth a shot really.

  • @uShaka (Comment 57) : I don’t know. It has been with the Sharks for a long time now. For short periods (e.g. towards the end of S15 2012) they manage to correct it, and then it is just creeps back. This year the Sharks is the team that concedes the most turnovers, and my suspicion would be that on average over a few years they must be towards the top end of that stat.

That to me is the biggest problem – the team gets into a good position, and then will inevitably turnover the ball. I think it is going to take some time to fix this inherent problem.

In the mean time the kicking and attack from turnover game plan is the best way to get some success. The defense needs to be spot on in each game though.

  • Must say, as far as handling goes, the Sharks did show a few things that got me excited. It’s again the backs that I’m most disappointing with.

I like those offloads and getting the ball wide with quick hands, but the backs still seem to muck up good opportunities.

The more we play like this, the more it will improve – a lot to be happy about after this game. Still some issues, but it seems like Jake has definitely put some focus on those things.

And for a change the worse part of the game, wasn’t the Sharks, but the ref. I haven’t had a chance to really lay into the ref for a long time.

Had some fun yelling at my screen today. My 4 year old niece was visiting while I was watching at my mom’s house – 5 minutes in, she wanted to know if I was enjoying the rugby. She didn’t think I was and suggested that I switch it of. At least we won, but yeah, it wasn’t the most enjoyable. I hate bad ref calls and these handling errors are giving me a headeache.

Yip, the second half was also much better than the first. I like that we didn’t kick all our ball away and looked to swing the ball around a little. If anything we looked a little rusty in this area, but clearly the guys can, if they want to. We almost scored on more than one occasion, just because we were willing to run and pounced on the opposition mistakes.

I think it will depend on how we do with the next two games and weather Jake has already rested a couple of guys by then. The guys who need a break – Willem (who looked good today btw), Marcell, Steyn and our props.

So if Marcell (who went of in this game) can get a full rest this week and Maybe the two props, then maybe we can rest Willem and Steyn for the game after, with the others coming back.

Then we can either go full strength for the last game, or give one of these guys another game of, or one of the other guys might need a break.

  • @robdylan (Comment 11) : Not so sure about that Rob but I will watch the replay. If I hadn’t seen his name on the team sheet I wouldn’t have noticed he was on the park in the first half. Just as I was questioning his ability he almost scored a try. Then I start on about JP’s current form or lack there of and he scored a try. I know what to do now. Pity I didn’t question McLeod’e erratic form as his bad choice to run the blind side in the dying seconds almost cost us the game. All in all the boys did what they needed to do. Lets hope the Crusaders soften the Brumbies up a bit.

  • Heimar Williams, so underrated and yet so so talented. SP needs more airtime we need him at 15. Mvovo doing well but SP better at 15. Mvovo needed at wing. What a pleasure it would be to move JP and Frans to centre have Mvovo and ndugane (or williams) come on wing zeilinga on 10 reinach on 9 pair Keegan Daniel, Kanko and Marcell on flanks and nr 8 movie Alberts to Lock. Start Adriaanse instead of Jannie. Develop Dale’s tighthead skills.

  • @ John Galt – if I’m not mistaken – Whitehead is no longer part of the sharks setup, he went to the kings, that said, Heimar had one hell of a game, seing that the tactic today was not attacking rugby, JW should have thought that we need to win this one for the start of the tour to get the guys moral up again after last week, please go and see again also whom on a couple of times got Jordaan away in space, no other than Heimar, also remember that he is not a seasoned PRO as yet, but he sure has all the making in him to become one, must say I really think on my oppinion that Mvovo is far better currently on FB that on the wing, he must just get settled well then I think will we see the fireworks coming, just glad that we got the tour of to a decent start

What have John Smith and Jake White and his extended team colder and co. done to improve our beloved rugby union. Arrogance, win at all cost, favouritism, etc. BRENDON VENTOR gelled the same players into a great winning team. 99% of all players in the squad was contracted by Plum and Rudolph? What has Jake brought – Ettienne and Tim Swiel ? Arrogant asshole if you ask me!

  • If there was a qualified ref and AR at this game the Sharks would have had a lot less pressure on them. I have 5 big issues with this Andrew Lees incompetent person: Obviously that slap down and that they had scored without tapping the ball, but the fact that we demolished their scrum and Lees awarding them the penalty and the fact that their 9 did not put 1 ball straight into the scrum after penalising McLoed early and that they were allowed to sack our drives at will. O yes, I almost forgot about the forward pass in the 14th minute as 10 rolled the ball to a forward in an offside position (not 3m in front of Lees)

You are also right that Marcel has been superb this year, in my opinion, head and shoulders ahead of any SA loose forward in the competition.
