Bonus point comes at a cost

Having enjoyed a very rare bonus-point win this last weekend, the DHL Stormers coaching staff must have thought they had turned a corner and would make an attempt to finish the season on a high note – but there was probably a solitary grey cloud in an otherwise crisp and clear autumn sky in Bellville yesterday as Allister Coetzee and his staff received their injury report from the medical staff.

Captain Jean de Villiers has been ruled out of the North-South derby against the Old Enemy this weekend, de Villiers has succumbed to an ACL injury that has been bothering him for some time and Bok coach Heyneke Meyer will no doubt be in Coetzee’s ear about giving the Bok skipper an extended lay-off, even though it is unlikely to happen as de Villiers is central to the quick decision making process being employed by the Cape side. Schalk Burger is likely to take over the captain’s armband – Burger who played just short of 60 minutes this weekend put in a massive performance and was given a rousing send off by the small (by Newlands standards) crowd.

Other injury worries are loosehead prop Steven Kitshoff who hurt his knee(long term), scrumhalf Louis Schreuder(fractured thumb 3 months), wing Kobus van Wyk(wrist TBC) and lock /flank Jurie van Vuuren(shoulder 8 weeks).

Pat Cilliers will come into the selection frame this week and Oliver Kebble will most likely win his first start .

Vodacom Cup players Alistair Vermaak, (scrumhalf) Dylon Frylinck (utility back). Robert du Preez (centre) and Huw Jones (centre) will all train with the senior squad this week and will be considered for selection.

  • Looking at the state of the Stormers injuries makes me feel a little bit better about the Sharks…

  • Catrakilis still out for another week, Losi also out for 2 weeks which means Kolbe will probably start against the Bulls(eish)

  • Even some of the other Vodacom guys who would normally have been considered are injured. I’ve just read that Michael Rhodes is also being monitored, losing him will be a killer blow

  • Quite scary to think that our Bok captain & vice captain both captain the teams at the bottom of the Super 15 log

  • @Shona (Comment 8) : not to worry the other vice captain is right at the top of the log.
