Three changes for Sharks

Cell C Sharks Director of rugby Jake White has mostly kept faith with the side that recorded an opening tour win over the Rebels last week, for Saturday’s top-of-the-table meeting with the Brumbies in Canberra.

An expected change at openside flank, where Keegan Daniel comes in for the injured Marcell Coetzee, is the only one to the pack (and one of just three overall). Daniel joins Jean Deysel and Ryan Kankowski in a mobile loose trio that has played as a combination many times before, although perhaps not all that often in the last two or three years.

Other changes see fit again Cobus Reinach and S’bura Sithole restored to the starting lineup. Reinach rotates into the starting scrumhalf berth to replace Charl McLeod, while Sithole comes in at outside centre, meaning a shift to the number 12 jersey for Paul Jordaan. Heimar Williams drops to the bench, where he replaces the injured Fred Zeilinga.

The other new face in the match 23 is that of Tera Mtembu, who will wear the number 20 shirt.

  • @ChrisS (Comment 6) : Just hope Jordaan is more interested in putting his center partner into the gap, rather than doing it all himself.

It could be magic, or a serious crash ball implosion.

This year, it seems we get to be excited about every injury enforced tweak and change. Each player opens new game breaking possibilities, as apposed to just being temporary stopgap solutions.

  • I hope the guys he has selected are all fully fit cos if we lose 1 or 2, esp Steyn we will be in huge shite! JW has gone for a speedy side but unless the forwards get them the ball its all for nothing. I would have played SP over Ndungane and given Adriaanse a run-but other than that its a good side. I wonder if Adriaanse’s lack of game time has forced him out of Bok contention. If so he will be on his bike soon

  • @ChrisS (Comment 16) : @JD (Comment 17) : Our front row off the bench has been good all year so cant understand why they havnt been given a start or more game time. Adriaanse is a good player but he has Bok aspirations which wont be realised if he continues to catch splinters. The reason i say SP over Odwa is that on tour I would prefer the cool ,calm head of Odwa in the 2nd half than the all guns blazing SP at the end when the game is possibly tight.

My issue is more to do with Ndungane. Odwa has been great on D this season but I think SP at 15 and Mvovo and JP on the wing would be absolutely lethal.

  • SP….must really go back to the Kings, do not rate him at all, always running round like a headless chickken. Rather take a chance with Mvovo, was very good since moving to 15 and makes a decision quick and goes with it. SP and Kirchner same player, kick and chase… leave him on the bench.

Let’s see if we look like contenders, this Saturday.

  • @Lieplapper (Comment 34) :

SP hasn’t been at his best this year, but I don’t think you can blame it on the player alone. My biggest criticism of him, since playing for the Sharks, has been his kicking. His clearing is very short at times and also not very accurate.

That’s one thing that has been a big surprise about Mvovo for me. His clearing and kicking is more efficient.

Both players have their positives on attack. Mvovo runs at the line looking for weaknesses, hoping to break a tackle – usually stays on his feet and is able to make phase ball available to the team. SP is more unpredictable, confuses opposition and often opens up space to put players into gaps, but he will have to improve just his basic kicking skills, imho, if he wants to push Mvovo out of that 15 jersey.

  • @Letgo (Comment 36) :

Very fair comments, still think SP is indecisive and gets caught behind the gain line though, but you make a valid point about his kicking.

When he played for the Kings he was fearless, decisive and a absolute handful to defend against, now he is indecisive, without a plan, sometimes looks scared to take contact and would rather put up the high ball and chase because that’s the safe option. Maybe arrogance is playing a part since moving to us because he feels that he has arrrived, I don’t know.
You should have been a defense lawyer……….

  • Comment 37, posted at 08.05.14 13:55:20 by Lieplapper Reply

  • @Lieplapper (Comment 37) :

I put it to you …

I think his indecisiveness is partly also due to trying to fit his game into a new game style. I think with the Kings the players felt more free to express – it was a nothing to lose environment.

SP was good for us in the CC. His attacking skills was a threat to opposition defenses and I don’t think JW benched him because of his indecisiveness on attack or lets say perceived indecisiveness on attack. I really think it is because his kicking in general is sub standard for a fullback.

Jesse Mogg is one of the best kicking fullbacks in SS, he also has developed into quite a threat on the counter attack, but that came with confidence. My belief is still that he was selected by White for his kicking.

Mvovo is a better kicker and better defender than SP. He still struggles to link up with his players, something SP, when he’s not kicking (and and JW’s coaching that’s not often), is always looking to do and often manages to achieve.

Have a look at the Rebels game, SP got a good 30 min or so in the second half and most of our attacks from the back had SP as a link man to a good move.

  • I have to say that Stephan Lewies’ interview earlier in the week certainly reinvigorated my belief that the Sharks are just one game away from running the opposition ragged, he eluded to an undisclosed mandate to give the pill some serious air whenever deemed fit. The selection of Paul at 12 and the massive risk of going into this game with only one recognised fly-half undoubtedly backs this notion up. Unforced errors have all but crippled our attacking momentum thus far and one cannot help but think that there’s just way too much talent here for the law of averages not to give in! JW won’t settle for anything less than a dominant perfomance at Canberra, it can be done and I’m sure JW would have voiced that to the boys.

  • To the Jannie haters, who the f is Janinie, and the Beast haters please learn the game and then make comments. The front row has been solid every game, the support in the linouts and kick offs has been great. Now lets move over to the extras a front rank may be expected to offer. Jannie has been good, if not great and strong in the tight loose but not the gazelle around the field. If he was he would be playing open side flanker. To be honest apart from the one game he has kept his mouth shut more often. There I though over exaggeration was a woman with pms thing. Beast is not in the side to build up tackle stats, if he was he he would be wearing No. 6, 7 or 8 on his back, he is a prop and has done the prop work well, I noticed the haters didn’t comment on meters gained. There is also a clear difference between the tactics of the player starting the game and someone coming on as sub. Also the match may be in a completely different phase at that time i.e. primarily defensive or offensive etc depending on the score and the coaches instructions. To compare stats from different phases of the game is verging on idiotic. It is very nice to have the opportunity to voice our opinions like this just be careful you don’t come across clueless. I do believe there is a Kadashian show on some channel on TV that might be more up your alley.

  • @JD (Comment 54) : Quite right both need a rest, the problem is coming off the bench a rest? A rest really is out of the match 23 completely. It is rare a front rank does not have to come off the bench in any game. I think that loss to the Highlands changed plans a bit and we have to secure more points on the away leg which means a change in who rests when.

  • @markp (Comment 53) : I dont think Jannie or the Beats have been bad at all this year, probably quite the opposite and both , the Beast especially, are looking more mobile than they have in the last 3 years. The issue with them playing week in and week out now is that come the last Super rugby or Rugby Championships games when we really need them to be firing at their best, will they have the fuel in the tank to give those performances? I have my doubts!! Hence the need for rotation even if its on the bench, it still makes a difference as well as allowing the next guys in line to step up and produce the goods

  • @pierre_mackie (Comment 66) :

Okay, my opinion is still that SP’s kicking needs work. And I like SP, I liked him since I first saw him at the Kings, I thought he had some Dagg qualities to him, but I really feel like he needs to work on the distance and accuracy of his kicking – especially that aspect of his play concerned me. The rest, I feel, was a bit up and down since the start of Super Rugby, but I would have been happy to see him continue at 15 if his kicking was better.

Btw it looks like JW has used him more and more in the last couple of games and he has looked good of the bench. He is not out of it completely yet, but I think Jake wants room for Odwa, Mvovo and JPP and that automatically shifts SP to the bench.
