Sharks props join the ton-up club

Saturday’s game against the Crusaders could mark another major milestone for a pair of Cell C Sharks players, with props Beast Mtawarira and Jannie du Plessis each set to earn a 100th Vodacom Super Rugby cap for the team, if selected.

Mtawarira, who has been a Shark since his junior days, has earned all of his 99 previous caps in this competition wearing the black and white of the Sharks and on Saturday will join the legion of “home grown centurions” that has welcomed Keegan Daniel and JP Pietersen already this season, while also boasting Bismarck du Plessis and Jacques Botes from the current group, who earned their 100th caps in seasons gone by.

The older du Plessis brother earned 26 Super Rugby caps for the Cheetahs before moving to Durban and has now, like Mtawarira, amassed 99 appearances in the black and white. Like Odwa Ndungane (who also started his career elsewhere before seeing the light), Jannie will earn his 100th Sharks Super Rugby cap if selected to face the Crusaders – and 126th overall.

That figure will see Jannie eclipse the 125 career caps gained by both John Smit and AJ Venter, to stand alone as the second-most-capped South African Super Rugby player ever. Victor Matfield currently stands alone on 135 appearances for the Bulls and Cats.

  • Unfortunately another milestone that looks extremely likely to end in tears 😥

  • So far each game this year when one of our players had their 100th game ended badly for us, this week we have 2, this is going to either end up twice as bad for us, or will be whats needed to break the 100 curse that we are having.

  • @KingRiaan (Comment 2) : Not entirely accurate. We won at Ellis Park during Odwa’s 100th Sharks game.

  • 2 guys hitting 100, victory is ours…its written in the entrails of a heathen recently eviscerated by the sword of a Crusader.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 5) : @vanmartin (Comment 4) : My bad guys, but you Odwa always gives 100%, in my opinion guys like JP and Keegan for example seemed to just cruise in their 100th game.

  • Massive achievement for 2 guys at the top of the professional game. Irrespective of your feelings regarding them nobody can deny that they have been the best props in the country for at least the last few years. to quote a cliche: It all starts up front….

  • I would love if one of them scores a try this weekend, like the commentator in the movie The Replacements say:”I love to see a fat guy score” (Not that I would call one of them fat 😆 )

  • Check out this 135kg schoolboy prop from Sacred Heart College in NZ score tries. Doesn’t use his size to run over people, because he has skills (and speed) to burn.

  • @rhineshark (Comment 13) : For a 135 kg unit this guy sure has speed to burn. He does not need to use his size to run over people – nobody just wants to tackle him.
