New loose trio for Sharks

Cell C Sharks Director of Rugby Jake White has reshuffled his pack ahead of Saturday’s meeting with the Crusaders in Christchurch, with Tera Mtembu and Ettienne Oosthuizen both coming in for starts this week.

White has opted to use the bulk of Willem Alberts at the back of the scrum this week, with the big Bok replacing Ryan Kankowski at number 8. Oosthuizen thus slots in at 4 to partner Stephan Lewies, while another straight swap sees Mtembu handed his first start of the year, in the number 6 jersey worn by Keegan Daniel last week.

Daniel and Kankowksi will look to add a double-dose of impetus off the bench this week.

Veteran winger Odwa Ndungane appears to have succumbed to another shoulder injury – or perhaps a recurrence of the same one that saw him miss out earlier in the year – and his spot at right wing thus goes to JP Pietersen, who moves over from the left. Lwazi Mvovo is back in the number 11 jersey this week, as SP Marais reclaims the fullback spot.

Tim Swiel comes onto the bench in the final change to the match 23.

I believe this will be our best chance to give the Saders a real go, hell even beat them! The way we are going see-saw now, win-loose-win-loose, this weekend is our turn to win again! πŸ™‚ Yes man!

  • To be honest I rather like Alberts at 8. I like the look of the backline but for me id have played Swiel, Steyn and Jordaan and put Sithole on the wing for JPP who has looked half asleep this year. But the side JW has selected has all the attributes to play good attractive rugby and be strong on defense but it all depends on the approach and whether they are ‘scared’ to take on the Crusaders at actually playing rugby

  • SP is very much an attacking player, hopefully he’s been given some freedom to have a go from the back and link up with JPP and Mvovo. Mixture of kicking and attacking from the back could actually work….

Look for me if we keep ball in hand with this huge pack and not hand the ball with kicks every few seconds in the game we will be ok,there are no less than about 10 strong ball carriers in this team so I cannot see us kicking everything away.

Pick and drive will be the order of the day, and as long as the support for the ball carrier is speedy and strong we will be OK.

  • It’s not the kicking for territory that I think is the problem. For me it’s the butchering of opportunities when we are on attack through a wild pass goes over someones head, at his ankles or behind his back.

Sure there is a ton of kicking but that is more due us losing possession too easily when in their half and having to start the territorial battle all over again.

  • The Sharks players need to have respect for possession to be drilled into them. If you can keep the ball when in the strike zone for a decent period of time, the defensive wall will either eventually break down, or the other team will concede a penalty.

  • Loose trio is not balanced but can’t complain as neither Keegan nor Ryan have added much value in terms of what we know they can do…and that is to turn a game upside down. Steyn must not try too hard. He needs to realize that he isn’t the only backline player on the field. Still worried about our ability to distribute and create from 12. Anyway, best of luck boys. Other than swop Reinarch for Mac ,at least to start, this is a very good team that has an excellent chance at an injury depleted Saders,no Reid, Dagg,Ramano,Carter, that sort of should balance out,no Lambie,PSDT,and Marcel.

I think the bulked up pack with pace off the bench is the way to go. But it won’t be exciting rugby – that would be what the Crusaders want.

You need to make guys like Nadalo play from deep and be put under defensive pressure – so let’s hope that the guys kick much better this week.

  • Right. What is the best way to beat NZ teams, given that SA players, willie le roux excluded, are designed and built to run into the player on either side of the gap, and don’t really have the skill to match NZ sides, is to rattle them with constant and merciless aggression. The sharks are going to have to be in their faces defensively from the first minute to the last. The key thing will then be to take those counter attacking opotunities, take drop goal opportunities and kick all the penalties.

  • Once again the SAFFA team had the option of superior pace and skill (if they ever used it) vs bulk and brawn….and we went with the latter. I really rate Mtembu, but that is 1 clever player in the entire pack…!!!

We have tried this approach against the Saders many times…and always fall short! Just look at the Boks track record vs ABs in recent years..we play like the books

Pace and skill to burn out wide, but it won’t reach them with Steyn at 10.

I would rest the entire front row, even the 2nd coming in Bismarck. He is not a captains skid mark…and certainly not the awesome player he was, before he was given the leadership role!!!

  • @Windgat101 (Comment 75) : Crawling out of the woodwork now that the Bulls are finding some good form comes across as a little fair-weather though. I can state with sincerity that I’m happy for you that your team are coming right but try to at least be a little more gracious in their good fortune instead of playing to the stereotypical Bulls supporter trope. Also, apologies for coming off as preachy but we actually get along quite well with very many opposition supporters on the blog. No reason the same can’t be true in your case.

  • @JD (Comment 65) : The fact that they use a lock as their attack coach kind of proves my point – doesn’t it?

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 78) : Well he did spend most of his time in the backline during his career so…haha

  • @SheldonK (Comment 79) : To be fair I watched a video comparing NFL and rugby, and it showed a Bok try created by Matfield with a little chip kick over the defender, regather and offload to Jaques Fourie who scored.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 80) : Yeh I do remember that. Dont get me wrong Matfield is a quality player not just at the lineout but his handling and general skills are very good. His tackle count in games is also very high. Its why many opposition players rate him so highly.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 81) : he really surprised me this season he’s not as sh!t as I thought he would be. He actually looking good and with the lack of other younger options like Eben or PSDT I would not be to mad if he gets picked for the Bokke.
