The DHL Stormers squad to take on the Cheetahs at Newlands has been announced and Allister Coetsee and co were able to announce players returning from injury instead of adding names to the wounded list.

Jean de Villiers and Schalk Burger, captain and vice captain respectively, both make a return to the starting XV which sees Damian de Allende move back to the right wing and Siya Kolisi to the bench. De Villiers’ return should bring a smile to the faces of Stormers supporters, as his decision making was sorely missed last week, even though the Stormers recorded a good victory over the visiting Western Force.

De Villiers’ influence , it is felt, would have ensured that the extra pass that was required to score a clutch of tries would have been sent . Schalk Burger will be expected to bring his brand of aggressive defence to the game; the Cheetahs were allowed to much space when the sides met earlier this year and the Stormers were punished.

Alistair Vermaak , after putting in impressive performances against the Bulls and Force deservedly gets a chance to make his starting debut. Peter Grant who started in his 100th Super Rugby game last week makes way for Kurt Coleman at pivot. Coleman has been consistent this year and many felt was short changed in being dropped from the starting line-up for sentiment last week.

Oli Kebble returns to the match day squad in the number 17 jersey after sitting out 2 weeks with concussion, he will be kept company by forwards Stephan Coetzee, Brok Harris , Jean Kleyn and Siya Kolisi. Dylon Frylink and Kobus van Wyk make up the reserve backs .

The squad to face the Cheetahs:
15 Jaco Taute, 14 Damian de Allende, 13 Juan de Jongh, 12 Jean de Villiers (c), 11 Cheslin Kolbe, 10 Kurt Coleman, 9 Nic Groom, 8 Duane Vermeulen, 7 Schalk Burger, 6 Nizaam Carr, 5 Ruan Botha, 4 Michael Rhodes, 3 Pat Cilliers, 2 Deon Fourie, 1 Alistair Vermaak.
Subs: 16 Stephan Coetzee, 17 Oli Kebble, 18 Brok Harris, 19 Jean Kleyn, 20 Siya Kolisi, 21 Dylon Frylinck, 22 Peter Grant, 23 Kobus van Wyk.

  • Funny how JdeV always returns after a win and disapears after a loss.

Agreed. Other than the spelling, of course. 😉

    Cheetahs to go down.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 3) : sorry to say but I must agree with you as I don’t see the Cheetahs winning this one. Hope I’m wrong.

  • @JD (Comment 4) :
I’m backing the Stormers. I don’t buy into the whole Cheetahs woe-is-me back story.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 5) : to be honest I really don’t care who wins as long as the Sharks win. Only marginal in favour of the Cheetahs winning not as if I’ll cry if the Stormers win.

  • This is a decent side. Cheetahs are definitely facing an uphill battle. Should be an entertaining game.

  • Only thing i disagree with is more often than not these days JDV actually holds the ball into contact and doesnt pass.

  • @Dunx (Comment 10) : and that’s the way the Bok coach likes it, so he’s only cementing his place as Bok 12.
