Sharks player ratings v Blues

Another big “well done” to the Sharks, for digging deep and winning a crucial away game against the Blues, in the process extending their tour points haul to an impressive 13.

The team performance hovered somewhere between 7 and 8 out of 10, with that higher mark probably eluding them due to some poor discipline at times. Let’s rate the individuals.

1) Beast Mtawarira. A great game from a player who is back to his best. Scrummed powerfully, tackled well and made great progress on the drive, particularly in the lead-up to the first try. 8/10
2) Bismarck du Plessis. Captain courageous is standing up and delivering commanding performances week in and week out. He strode the North Harbour turf like a colossus on Friday. 8/10
3) Jannie du Plessis. Copped an unfortunate card – not to mention a few penalties at scrum time that just proved the ref wasn’t really watching what was going on. Apart from that, this was a really big game from Jannie, whose work on defence, in particular, was impressive. 7/10
4) Ettienne Oosthuizen. Has impressive skills for a man of his size – both as a pilferer and with ball in hand. I get the feeling there’s a lot more to this guy than we’ve yet seen. His best outing to date. 8/10
5) Stephan Lewies. Wow – can he really continue to get better? He’s pretty much looking the full package already. The best Shark on the park for me – and that’s saying quite a lot. 9/10
6) Jacques Botes. Tackled himself into the ground as he usually does and provided some good moments of continuity. Didn’t see much of his famed running game, but he did all that was needed. 7/10
7) Tera Mtembu. Once again, the workhorse in the loose trio tackled and tackled and tackled. Showed a few glimpses of what he can do in space, but it was his tight game that was more impressive on Friday. 8/10
8) Willem Alberts. A quiet game from the big man. All the moving around probably isn’t doing him the world of good, but he was well marked as a ball carrier all the same. 6/10

9) Cobus Reinach. A game that was pretty good all round, despite a few less-than-stellar moments. Reinach’s dawdling cost the side at the start of the second half, but he made good with the sort of try that only he could score, with that cracking pace and brilliant ball control. 7/10
10) Frans Steyn. He loses a point for the yellow card (which was one that he quite literally “took for the team”) but was otherwise very good at flyhalf. Steyn kicked superbly at posts, while his options were generally spot on. A few over-long kicks from hand were the only real negative. 7/10
11) Lwazi Mvovo. Just doesn’t get as involved from the wing as he does when wearing 15. Lwazi tackled well when called upon, but was rather quiet otherwise. 6/10
12) Paul Jordaan. Had nothing to do when it came to attack, but the way he defended and shut down Ma’a Nonu was simply outstanding. 8/10
13) S’bura Sithole. Another truly sublime performance from the man who – can you believe it – is playing a brand new position this year. Missed a couple of one-on-ones late in the game, but his understanding and implementation of the rush defensive system is key to the Sharks’ pressure game. 8/10
14) JP Pietersen. A very big game on defence – we’re still waiting for a bit of space with ball in hand for one of our deadliest strike weapons. 7/10
15) SP Marais. His spell on the bench seems to have done him the world of good as he again turned in a near-flawless display at fullback. 8/10

16) Kyle Cooper. The hero last week, he didn’t get a run this time around.
17) Dale Chadwick. Another good performance off the bench. 7/10
18) Lourens Adriaanse. Performed admirably once on. 7/10
19) Ryan Kankowski. Not enough time to rate.
20) Keegan Daniel. A pretty good cameo, particularly when he came on early for Mtembu. 7/10
21) Charl McLeod. Quick and accurate, just the way we like him! 7/10
22) Tim Swiel. Unused.
23) Heimar Williams. Unused.

  • Reinach desperately needs to work on his option taking, but that will hopefully improve the more he works with Dr Calder. Plus you could see the value of a player that supports in Cobus’s try, because Botes, as always was right there in support. That caused a bit of confusion in the Blues defence.

  • Was really impressed with Jordaans defence on Friday. His one on one and cross covering defence was excellent.

  • I think the ratings are spot on…I would have given the two locks the same score…those turnovers by Oosthuizen were crucial and are a real bonus now that Marcel is injured. The really interesting one for me is Willem Alberts. I also saw his game like Rob saw it…and yet in fantasy league, Alberts was given the 6 bonus points for the highest performance index…so he must have done well in the stats…and I can only think it could have been the tackle and metres stats. I’d like to check that out…

  • I would love to see Jannie and Beast get a rest this week end and give dale and Lourens a start with Bismark.
Give Willem a rest as wetland play Keegan,Terror and Botes.
Bring on Willem and Kyle, for the last 20

  • @The hound (Comment 8) : Marcel is supposed to be back for this weekend isn’t he? I would have 6) Marcel 7) Alberts 8) Terra. We need Alberts’ physicality against the Stormers

  • I think the ratings are pretty spot on.

“Jake’s boy” had a phenomenal game on both attach and defence – but his ground work, for a man of his size, was phenomenal.

I agree that Jannie was hard done by the ref – and his all-round work rate was excellent.

Reinach continues to be a maddening mix of the average and the sublime. I guess he just needs experience to improve his option-taking and kick execution, while the changes in the 8-9-10 axis havent really helped him. On the whole though, his predatory nature is essential to us, as a turnover based team.

Jordaan was simply massive on defence, while Sbura is getting the best experience in his first season – we all know he is a helluva attacker, but its great that he is getting really tested on defence.

  • @The hound (Comment 8) : I agree – we will need a fresh Willem for the playoffs. He will probably get a fair bit of game time in the Bok games, although it would be interesting to see what HM does with Burger and possibly even Juan Smith.

It will be interesting to see what team selection Jake comes up with this week.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 10) : If Reinach can just be more consistent with the rest of his game, he should be in Bok contention soon. He is a damn dangerous player that can change a game in an instant.

  • Jordaan for me was phenomenal! Standing up like that against the much-hyped Nonu is super impressive. S’bu missed a few tackles, but I believe he will get better with time and experience. Question now is, when we have our proper flyhalf back (either Zeilinga or Lambie), who will play outside Steyn? Who to bench? Nice head scratcher for JW I’m sure..

  • @Another Nick (Comment 14) : I would play jordaan at 13. He’s sorted out his handling, his work rate is the best in the backline and his defense is a little bit better than sithole’s

  • @woody (Comment 15) : Currently Jordaan gets my nod as well. But wow, Sithole is going to push him so hard for the nr. 13 jersey.. talk about healthy competition! And then Heimar is in the mix as well.. 😮

  • @Another Nick (Comment 17) : Agreed. Reckon Sbura and Chavanga, when fit, will put lots of pressure on JP to perform otherwise he could lose his place in the starting team

  • As much as I enjoyed having Mvovo at 15 just for the sheer pace and counter attack options, I must admit SP had a good one friday.

So, what to do when Odwa is fit again? Surely SP can`t go back to the bench now…

Maybe demote JP to the bench and hope he comes back in the kind of shape SP is in? 😈

  • @Honey Badger (Comment 12) : The Sharks aren’t in a financial crisis…they have ordered a forensic audit into the use of finances a while ago…”the use of money to promote the franchise” will be investigated. A case of wait and see what that’s all about, I think.

  • Reinach is very slow from the base and he passes too deep to get us generating momentum. McLoed is great at doing this. It is a skill that Reinach can work on. He needs to be assisted in developing decision making skills as well to ensure that he sees the field before kicking but apart from that, he is a great 9.
SP was great at 15 and Jordaan fantastic in defence. Very happy with the team even when another bad NZ ref was pedantic again.(but not worse than Berry imo) Good rating great win. Now for a tough battle against the WP!

  • I know this is a bit late, but I just watched the highlights again of friday’s match…I still can’t see where jannie infringed to get the yellow. I have no problem with the yellow if there was the 3 infringements, but Jannie wasn’t even close to the ball when we gave away the last penalty. Did i miss it,or did he just give the card to no3 cause we made 3 mistakes?

Let the man loose…combo with Tera and Alberts would be lethal. Pace, power, bulk, intelligence and work ethic!!!
