Downey joins Burger in Japanese switch

The big news – at least form a Bok point of view – seems to be the confirmation that Schalk Burger will join Suntory Sungoliath in Japan after Super Rugby this year. Sharks fans will be more interested to see that Justin Downey is joining him.

After an impressive junior career with the Sharks, Downey moved to Griquas in 2010 in search of game time, after finding limited opportunities at senior level in Durban. He made his Super Rugby debut for the Cheetahs the following year and established himself as a mainstay in the Griquas pack, before moving back to Durban ahead of last year’s successful Currie Cup campaign.

2014 saw him fail to crack a Super Rugby berth under new coach Jake White, though and along with others in a similar boat – such as Edwin Hewitt, Peet Marais and Wiehahn Herbst – Downey has opted to continue his career out of the country.

Burger’s Japanese deal will see him return to the Stormers for Super Rugby – my understanding is that Downey’s is a permanent move, in the same vein as those recently concluded by Keegan Daniel and Jean Deysel.

The Sharks now suddenly look rather vulnerable at loose forward, a position in which there has been a serious glut of talent over the last few seasons.

  • Who knows now? Maybe with all these players leaving, there might be money for some high profile signings in the near future?

  • Still find it strange how everyone is leaving since Jw took over.

  • @Uli Boelie (Comment 6) : You know what they say about a new broom. I just have a suspicion that he was honest and open to the players (Except guys like Deysel and Keegan) that they weren’t in his plans and instead of playing Vodacom and Club rugby, they would rather go make some bucs overseas

  • @Uli Boelie (Comment 6) : Maybe they can join Plum at the Canes now that he realised that’s he’s nothing more than an assistant coach. 🙄

Players all over SA are leaving for snails and sushi, not just the Sharks players.

How many guys left the Bulls last year?

Sharks are changing their whole approach to rugby, which means new recruitment structures, new junior structures, and new ways of determining which players rise to the top.

Lots of players leaving are also touching on 30, so time to prolong your career and enlarge your bank account.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 15) : Chris Cloete played for Rovers on Saturday,he has perfected scoring tries from the driving maul but a bit quiet the rest of the game.Kleinhans was far better,Collegians won 13-11 by the way.
