It is with great pride that I can announce that four Sharksworld bloggers and four other sporting journalists walked away with the spoils in the second edition of the Builders Sports Quiz – Durban edition. It was sweet revenge after the same table was counted out to second place in last year’s event.

The Quiz, hosted by Prosport International and sponsored by Builders Warehouse and Marshalls World of Sport, was held at the Sibaya Casino Conference Centre, with many familiar faces sharing the evening with us. MC for the night, Dan Nicholl made their night especially tough, haggling them for all he is worth. Pat Symcox got the most of it with Nicholl continuously referring to the girls walking around as his daughters named Svetlana, Sapphire and Crystal.

Others who came second best to Nicholl included Jeremy Thomson’s lack of twitter followers (He had 12 before the quiz started and eventually left with more than double that number), while Butch James and Anton Bresler’s intelligence was continually questioned. Brent Russell’s height was also compared to that of two jockeys attending the evening, Muzi Yeni and S’Manga Khumalo.

Sharkworld was represented by Caleb Charles, who was also in attendance last year, Grant Wardell and Julian Pace. Each member of our team brought some individual knowledge or skill. Grant and Julian teamed up to get the very last question right (a question which counted double points), which was to name the current coach of the Fiji Sevens team. Between the two of them they also figured out the player who has played rugby league for one nation, rugby union for another nation, won both a Super Rugby trophy as well as a Heineken Cup trophy. Caleb somehow knew that Tendai Mtawarira made his Sharks Super Rugby debut against the Waratahs as well as knowing the difference between Lyndon Ferns and Darian Townsend. My role was simply to keep the team spirit alive and make sure everybody consumed enough of the free Castle around the table.

The man of the evening was Andre Bloem though. The East Coast Radio sports anchor is a walking encyclopaedia, knowing everything from a young South African fast bowler who took 6 wickets at the Under 19 World Cup, to knowing which the first year the Comrades was run, to knowing the second partner of the Dusi Canoe marathon winners. That is but a few of the examples of his knowledge, as the rest of the table was still taking in the question, he had already written down the answer.

Along with some brilliant questions our table got right, we also had a few blunders, including not knowing the score of the 2013 Currie Cup Final. We didn’t take that too seriously since the Sharks management table next to us also got it wrong!

At the half time dinner break, our table was in the lead, getting 23 out of the 30 questions right. Our nearest rivals, and sworn nemesis from the previous year, the Dolphins team, was 2 points behind us. We were in a similar position last year, and the Dolphins made a comeback to draw level where we were controversially counted out to second place.

This year the team knew that a strong second half performance was needed, and with rugby as the last of the six sections, we made it count to be overall leaders after 60 questions. To our surprise though, it was not the Dolphins who came in a close second, instead it was the Anton Bresler’s table who had somehow made up ground on us but did just enough to claim second.

As grand prize winners, we each walked away with prizes to the value of R5000. The big prize, literally, was a 2 stroke grass trimmer, or weed-eater as some of you might know it. It is a lovely prize, I am just not too sure what I am going to do with mine in my 11th floor flat…. The other part of the prize was a one night stay at the Sibaya Lodge for each of us, which I feel many of us would have used on the night had we known earlier.

I would like to thank Caleb, Grant and Julian for attending the night with me on behalf of Sharksworld, I certainly look forward to defending our crown next year. Thanks to David Brooke from Prosport International for the opportunity to attend such an event. Hopefully next year we can win the drill!
