  • So next week Sharks will be in second place when they face the Cheetahs in Bloem. Sharks must win next to games to ensure that they finish at least second on the overall log.

  • So the Waratahs still have to play the Highlanders at home and the Reds away.

I reckon they will win both.

The Sharks have the Cheetahs and Stormers away. I would hope they win both, but we’re at that stage when the Sharks do inexplicable things (like lose to a woefully understrength Stormers team at home after just clouting the Crusaders and Blues away 🙄 ).

I also get the sense some of the Sharks players have been played into the ground, through too much “consistency” in selection at the Sharks and also in playing for the Boks for the last 4 weekends in a row. It will be interesting to see if these players can lift themselves for another 4 massive Super rugby games (5 if we finish 3rd)…

The difference between finishing 2nd and 3rd is huge, not least because it buys us a week’s rest (I don’t believe home ground advantage always works to the Sharks’ favour when they are installed as favourites).

Whatever happens, it all boils down to this: we have to hope we finish 2nd and the Waratahs lose their home semi. Let’s be realistic, a final in Sydney is lost already, sorry to say (and yet another new team other than the Sharks – the best team never to win it – will lift the trophy before the deserving Sharks).

We really should have beaten the Stormers at home….

  • @Feather (Comment 20) : Yip – I believe the team that wants the cup this year will have to do it in Sydney – very difficult but not impossible.

  • @Feather (Comment 20) :

I think the Highlanders might just be in good enough form to cause an upset against the Waratahs, especially considering that there’s a top of the NZ conference spot at stake for them.

Even if they win though, the Waratahs could easily still get 1 or even two bonus points out of this game, then there’s the 5 they should take from the Reds. That’s 6/7 points (minimum), which will have them end on 44. I’d imagine the Sharks will only win their last 2 games, which gives us 43.

If we end 2nd we still have a home semi. That’s something. And then there is the possibility that the Crusaders would play the Waratahs in their semi, which could see the Crusaders play the Sharks at the tank.

So many things could still happen in the next 5 weeks. We just need to keep our side clean, get the 2 wins on the board and get ready for whatever we need to do to take this damn cup!
