Frans Ludeke has made sweeping changes to his Bulls team ahead of this weekend’s final Vodacom Super Rugby clash of the season, against the Rebels at Loftus Versveld.

The Bulls maintained a slim mathematical chance of play-off qualification going into last week’s game against the Stormers, but in failing to pick up any points there (either on the field or on the log) they are now out of contention and thus have nothing to lose in their final match.

Piet van Zyl, Roelof Smit, Bandise Maku, Marcel van der Merwe and Morne Mellet all come in for starts this week, with Smit earning a debut run-on cap after playing off the bench last week. Also coming into the frame for debuts off the bench this week are Junior Springboks Nico Janse van Rensburg (lock) and Jesse Kriel (utility back).

Vodacom Bulls: 15 Jurgen Visser, 14 Bjorn Basson, 13 JJ Engelbrecht, 12 Jan Serfontein, 11 Francois Hougaard, 10 Handré Pollard, 9 Piet van Zyl, 8 Jacques Engelbrecht, 7 Jono Ross, 6 Roelof Smit, 5 Victor Matfield (captain), 4 Paul Willemse, 3 Marcel van der Merwe, 2 Bandise Maku, 1 Morné Mellet
Substitutes: 16 Callie Visagie, 17 Werner Kruger, 18 Nicolaas Janse van Rensburg, 19 Marvin Orie, 20 Jesse Kriel, 21 Jacques-Louis Potgieter, 22 William-Small Smith, 23 Dean Greyling

  • It would have been better if he played JJ on the wing instead of Hougaard with the latter coming off the bench and Small-Smith starting alongside Jan.

  • I think it would have been fun if JJ and Visser were rather on the bench with Smith and Kriel starting, while they are at it. Beyers, I thought didn’t have a bad game against the Stormers and maybe deserved another chance. He is streets ahead of Visser, as he actually has an impact when he carries the ball up.
But, all things considered, glad the youngsters are peeking through.
