Kearsney number 8 Ayron Schramm – a stand out player for KZN at Craven Week level last year – has been handed the captain’s armband by new Sharks under 19 coach James Fleming as the side to take on the Leopards at Kings Park tomorrow is named.
Big Schramm makes up an exciting back row with Junior Bok flanker Jean Luc du Preez (blind side) and Marra Louw (open side), the latter captaining Free State at Craven Week level last year. Johan du Toit from Swartland (whose older brother Pieter-Steph is a little more famous) and big Hyron Andrews from Garsfontein make up the second row, with SA Schools tighthead Ruan Kramer adding steel to a front row that includes less well-known players in Bishops hooker Wesley White and Westville loosehead Mzamo Majola.
A surprise pick at left wing sees young Philip Marais – brother to Jandre and Peet – transition away from the second row and rather build on the speed that made him a junior hurdles champion. St Stithians flyhalf Innocent Radebe, who was unlucky to miss out on SA Schools selection after a great Craven Week joins Matt Reece-Edwards in a strong halfback combination, while local boys Chris Lines (Kearnsey) and Kelvin Elder (Maritzburg) will add pace out wide.

is Matt Reece-Edwards family to Hugh?
@Uli Boelie (Comment 1) : it’s his son
@robdylan (Comment 2) : Just how big and how quick is Philip Marais?
If he’s as big as his brothers then WOW!! 😯 😀
@ChrisS (Comment 3) : not all that tall…. 1.91m
@robdylan (Comment 4) : And how much does he weigh?
@robdylan (Comment 2) : But he is (was) on WP’s books. ❓
Arent we missing a Du Preez, or is he still injured from the Junior World Cup?
@Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 7) : he’s still missing from before the World Cup
@Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 6) : went, didn’t like it, came back.
@robdylan (Comment 8) : Wasnt Dan at the JWC?
Wrong way round. Elder was at Maritzburg College and Lines at Kearsney
@robdylan (Comment 9) : Ok found the info, so then presumably injured again.
@Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 10) : nope, ruled out just before. JL was.
@woody (Comment 11) : oh shit. Sorry!
Are the Juniors playing inside the stadium? Any fee?
@uShaka (Comment 14) : inside and free
@robdylan (Comment 15) : Thanx Rob.
Scores anyone?
32 – 17 to the good guys.
Good result for the Sharks.
