Cell C Sharks Director of Rugby Jake White has a few injury concerns to mull over ahead of Saturday’s Super Rugby knock-out clash against the Highlanders at Kings Park.

It is hoped that Beast Mtawarira and Pat Lambie could be passed fit to play; even though the former seemed to indicate in a tweet that he might still be out for a few weeks. Lambie has been there or thereabouts for a fortnight now, but should now finally be ready for action. White has indicated that he will not automatically throw either player straight into a starting role, though, meaning potential bench spots for both.

There are new casualties after Saturday’s grudge match in Cape Town; perhaps the most worrying are knocks taken by both Bismarck du Plessis and Willem Alberts which will see at least some doubt about their involvement this weekend. You’d fancy that Bismarck’s troublesome neck would need to be actually broken in order to keep him from leading his troops into this vital battle, particularly given the disastrous result when he missed the corresponding fixture during the regular season.

JP Pietersen will need to pass a concussion test, after being knocked out cold during the fist half in Cape Town, while Dale Chadwick and Cobus Reinach will also need to prove their fitness this week. The Sharks have to date revealed no details regarding Chadwick’s leg injury, while Reinach was withdrawn ahead of the Cape Town clash purely as a precautionary measure and should be expected to play this week.

The Sharks team will be announced at 10 on Thursday morning.

  • Bissie is the only one (although I think Kyle is an excellent players) that the Sharks can’t do without.

Thomas du Toit looked good against the Stormers, we shouldn’t risk either Beast or Chadwick if they aren’t 100%.

Lambie has been out for a while, but obviously it would be great to have him involved. The Steyn, Jordaan, Sithole combination has become a confident one for the Sharks though, so even JPP should not be risked. Chivanga and Odwa can cover wing in his absence.

Willem would usually be a massive loss, but we have Jean to step right in. And this would give Mtembu another chance to have a go.

  • Honestly, I’d rather see Sithole in the 13 jersey, he was much more effective on attack than JP was this season. I’d like to see JP stay on the wing.

  • @Letgo (Comment 2) : With our current game plan we need the physicality of both Alberts to start and Deysel later in the game.

  • How can J.P even remotely think of playing on Saturday,he was so obviously out cold even before he hit the ground.Surely the three week rule should apply here, anything less is criminal.
The brain swells with a concussion and a subsequent knock on a swollen brain is fatal.

  • I like Thomas so much after seeing him in only one match, that I am almost sad that we signed Stevens for the CC. Sbu must stay at 13, has the potential to be world class there. I don’t mind having Tera in the team, that laaitie can play!. Having Lambie at 10 will boost our attack, I just hope that it doesn’t disrupt the flow of the team. Reinach MUST start, he is arguably our most potent game breaker that we have at the moment.

  • Yes injuries are a concern but they always are. And yes the Sharks would be better served if all of Beast, Bissie, Lambie etc could play. But of more of a concern is what will the Sharks do differently to the last time we played the Highlanders as they were the one side to make us look pretty damn average!

Rob, knock-out games does seem to bring out the best in Charl though and Charl at his best isn’t to bad.

Also, if Lambie plays, it wouldn’t be a too bad option to reunite our last two Cup winner heroes for these last games.

I still think Reinach is probably more potent, but it wouldn’t be that bad to have Charl.

  • @robdylan (Comment 23) : @Uli Boelie (Comment 25) :

Uli, the problem is that you are blatantly against Reinach, while he clearly has some excellent qualities, while at the same time being for McLeod, while he clearly has some excellent failures.

Neither scumhalf is perfect, neither is useless. You insist to call Reinach useless – no one will see your point.

I feel Reinach is young with a lot of potential. Sure he has issues, but I also feel like he has improved on those a lot.

While at the same time, Charl, going away, the things he did best consistently at one time, he doesn’t do so consistently anymore.

I’m a huge fan of Charl and always felt he should play above Rory Kocket and were vindicated in my support for him in 2010, but Charl doesn’t produce the same magic so often anymore, therefore, I feel Reinach, even with some of his weaker attributes, is a better option for the Sharks right now.

Adriaanse must get more game time he is progressing well. My concern is backup for Cobus when Mcloud leaves. Hope Toni gets some time as well, don’t know what it is but I have always liked him he is so electric.
