Early scrumhalf troubles for Sharks

With Cobus Reinach’s elevation to the Springbok squad coupled with Charl McLeod’s decision to pursue his career in France, the Sharks find themselves needing to try out some new options at scrumhalf during this year’s Currie Cup. Injuries to a few players, though, look to be further muddying the picture.

First in line must surely be Stefan Ungerer, the young product of Maritzburg College who made a decent fist of his handful of Super Rugby appearances this year. He has suffered an unfortunate finger injury while on under 21 duty, though and looks likely to miss out on at least the first month of Currie Cup action as a result.

We’re hearing a very worrying rumour that Conrad Hoffmann, recently re-contracted from the Brumbies, may once again be injured. His first Sharks contract was essentially nullified by the succession of injuries that saw him play only a handful of games over two seasons; let’s hope that his second stint in Durban doesn’t go the same way (although the early signs aren’t good).

That leaves just Hanco Venter and Cameron Wright – both still under 21 – as scrumhalf options available to the Sharks coaches ahead of Saturday’s tough opener, an away game against Griquas.

  • Always an issue somewhere hey.

  • @rhineshark (Comment 4) : Nooooo! Cronje had a good Super Tourney towards the end there…but I say play the lighties!! Making them step up to the plate can only be a good thing, surely?

  • “Ahead of Saturday’s tough opener, an away game against Griquas.” Remember everyone, we want to lose against Griquas in the first game…that way we’re guaranteed to win the Currie Cup again this year!

  • I’m happy with Ungerer and Venter as our Currie Cup scrummies. If Ungerer is out for the first 4 games it gives Venter an extended run. Long term, that has to be a good thing…though I must admit I know nothing about Wright. Can anyone tell us anything about him?

  • @SheldonK (Comment 6) : That might be an idea as a back up option to Venter just while Ungerer is out.

  • @pastorshark (Comment 5) : He can surf until one of them inevitably gets injured. We know Hoffmann won’t last.

  • @rhineshark (Comment 11) : Ja, I haven’t even commented about Hoffmann…we know he’ll be injured, we know he’ll probably be crap if he does play, we know…oh dear!

  • C’mon Hoffmann! One would swear the Durban air causes him to rust up or something. The silver lining is that it gives our younger players a huge opportunity.

  • From what I’ve seen, Cameron Wright offers far more on attack than Hanco Venter.

The little I’ve seen of Cameron, he gave quick crisp service to his fh….Hanco plays a bit like Ruan Pienaar – SLOW

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 15) : cameron is a better attacking scrummy but thats all he has on venter

  • I have not been overly impressed with Venter – but I am not writing him off as he is still young.

Ungerer seems a very good player, and I hope takes his chances this season.

  • Thanks for the update, Rob. You’re ahead of the Sharks’ site! It’s nice to know these things before you read the team sheet! Sad about Ungerer. Totally expected re Hoffmann!
    Thanks again.

  • I would like to see Hanco Venter getting a long run to prove himself. Let’s not forget, he is still under 21 but his 3rd year at the Sharks. Played two years back already Vodacom Cup. He and Ungerer joined the Sharks same year and he was first choise ahead of Ungerer til he got injured last year. I like his attitude and way he is playing with one of the best passes in the game. Let’s give him a run with Ungerer as his back up.

  • How do our scouts buy or is there just no budget? This is a pro sport and we need to open the cheque book and buy pro players to ensure we win silverware connected to money. JW is way to keen on signing his disciples following everywhere. Stop this foolish nepotism and get Brendan back as coach while buying proper talent where we fall short.

  • @KILLER SHARK (Comment 20) : Sharks lost scouting contacts and experience when Gavin Melville, Hans Scriba and of course Streauli moved on. Butch is out of his depth in this particular area. It’s one area the Sharks need to improve on.
