Back to the Past for Boks once more

In a rather predictable move, the Springboks have called up yet another aging veteran of the 2007 World Cup triumph.

According to report, Juan Smith has been summoned to join the squad as cover for the injured Victor Matfield.

Smith, who is comfortable at both flank and tight lock, will presumably only be involved for as long as Matfield’s knee injury keeps him out. It’s anticipated that one of the other 4s – Lood de Jager or Eben Etzebeth – will need to make the shift into the number 5 jersey, since Smith has never played this position.

Coach Meyer has intimated that although Stephan Lewies made a solid test debut against Scotland earlier in the year, the quality of opposition in that match was not good enough to judge whether he’s ready to step up in the Rugby Championship. I’ll not comment further on what I think of that opinion.

  • Woohoo!! Happy to seen Juan back!!

Well is it not based on that performance that POlLARD is included in the Bok squad ? good grief ….

Can we skip forward to 2015 AFTER the wc so we can get on with things ?

but then again . Why was Lewis included against the Scots and not called up again if your not sure how he measures up ? makes no sens to me at all …

  • @Zibbie (Comment 15) : @FireTheLooser (Comment 17) : My only issue with Meyer to date is his win record against the All Blacks. Although one could argue that a certain ref didn’t much help matters in that regard we must start winning our home games at the very least. Regarding his player selections, that is his prerogative as coach even though I may not agree with every selection. It makes sense that every coach will try and achieve their objectives with players they feel most comfortable with. Regarding gameplan, I think the Boks have played some attractive rugby in their last two seasons, it seems to be improving although there is probably an over-reliance on le Roux’s playmaking. We need a really good backup to him.

And if you watched any Heineken Cup, Juan was in outstanding form. Now just because the Sharks stuffed up their S15 chances, doesn’t mean you all must be so negative towards the Boks.! Comments like I support the Sharks first and foremost, sounds like it comes from the Cape All Backs! My word!

  • The reason SARU will offer Meyer a contract extension before the WC, is that by the end of this year, his win/loss ratio will be the best of all coaches in the professional era.

Unlike White, Meyer’s teams do not capitulate against long odds. Unlike White or Mallett, Meyer is not ruled by his ego.

Think of Meyer as a PDivvie with a brain. 😉

Juan Smith is pure class and probably should have been included before a guy like Bakkies. My gripe is his selection as a lock replacement. Yes he is good in the lineout and yes like Alberts they will probably both play more at lock than flank in the future. Id love to See both Juan and Bakkies off the bench…but having said that there are so many quality young guns that should be given a shot. Strange how, since his departure, we’ve managed to hold on to PSdT (against all odds, thanks John Smit) and lured both Thomas “the tank” and Swiel down to the SHarks…all three players from Mr. WP’s own backyard.

Ja, we’re really in trouble since John Smit took over, what with a CC trophy and a third place SR finish, things have really gone backwards 🙄

And then lets have a look who we have lost since Srolls’ departure – Keegan Daniel, Jean Deysel, Francois Steyn, Charl McCleod, Anton Bresler, Wiehan Herbst.

Now look at who we are not even going to be getting from our most promosing schoolboys from this year – guys that are choosing the Lions over the Sharks and you have to start hearing alarm bells.

As for the CC, well lets see if we can retain it this year – that should be accomplishable if things are still on the up.

Anyway I hope I am very wrong.

…Gerhard Moster, Alistair Hargreaves, Rory Kockott, Ruan Pienaar, the Butch James debacle, we actually lost Steyn under Straeuli but he returned due to a deal with SARU and he will be returning for SR, how many Sharks youngsters picked the bulls over the Sharks (the Kriel twins, if I’m not mistaken), how many locks have we lost under Stroolsie?

Remember Warren Whitely, Redelinghuys and probably a few others all went to the Lions whilst Straeuli was at the Sharks…

Btw, PSdT was all but packed for the bulls, until John Smit had a meeting with him…it made big news around this neck of the woods.

I might not have all my facts right, more than a few bloggers will be able to correct me where I am wrong, but for me, the Lions can have kamp-staldraad with a smile, he’s merely contracting Sharks academy rejects over there.

Now if you compare the numbers of those players you mentioned that moved on and you take the time into consideration that Rudi was with the Sharks and compare it with the list and calibre and numbers of players that have left in the few short months since he moved on then one maybe gets another picture.

  • @Morné (Comment 57) :
All true except for the sidelining of Venter. That wasn’t by choice, he was only ever here for 6 months(didn’t even sign a contract) and then advised Smit to speak to White after talking to White himself.

Who is our main talent spotter anyway.

And Heyneke is still stuck in 2004 as well just by the by.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 72) : Most of the guys moving on are approaching the magical 3 zero mark.

If we saw players leaving in droves, as we saw at the bulls a few years ago, then I’d be worried, but that’s not the case at all.

So from what I’m seeing, I do not see any reason to be worried…it’s the normal ebb-and-flow of senior players and fringe youngsters moving on.

I also believe the Sharks are moving toward a reliance on academy players, instead of using band-aid seniors form other franchises.

Our players stock seem to be rather healthy, with 4 scrumhalves, 4 fh’s, 3 hookers, 3 lh’s, loosies to burn, serious center depth….lock and th being our only problem areas.

We never had this kind of player depth in our backline under Straeuli.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 74) : well if you look at the form of our u19s and u21s not sure who you’d want to fast track. They’re having an awful season into the senior side. Sharks will have to pull out the cheque book!

  • Sharks u 21s and u19s have each played 4 games, 3 at home, they have each only won 1 game, at home – against the Leopards. They have lost 2 home games. These guys will have to do some serious stepping up if they are to fill the voids left by those leaving.

  • @slammerboy (Comment 75) : Haven’t seen any of their games, still rather early in the season too….but guys like Ungerer, Venter, Wright, Thomas du Toit, André Esterhuizen are all age group players ready for senior CC rugby…rather impressive.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 78) : I wouldn’t have a clue, as they’d all be with the academy…just stating that it is interesting to note the depth we now have at backline.

If it is due to Staeuli, then he sure took his time to get us to this position…and I guess we should give our new recruiter the same amount of time to get into the groove of proper recruiting.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 71) : I know he did not sign him himself, but he did initiate the process by talking to JW and then recommending Jake to John. My point is just that is not the action of a man being sidelined, but rather someone that wanted to move on.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 79) : people need to know that Sharks junior recruitment will grind to a halt unless the scouts pull their finger out. About 6 Glenwood kids have been signed by the Lions. True about our talent spotter jolling at some Oakley event when he should have been working his nuts off in Middelburg!

    Who is our new recruiter?

  • @slammerboy (Comment 83) : He saw what he wanted to see at the Kearsney tourney…

….Craven week is not an accurate gauge of all the talented players in SA…

Lewies never made it to craven week, if our guys relied only on Craven Week, we’d be without him.

I’d rather have our recruiter visiting school tournaments to look at far more players than he’d get to see at Craven Week.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 86) : what about the players who only get a chance to market their talents at a tournament like Craven Week? The top players at Kearsney are already signed up. I also think its good PR for the Sharks to have the scouts at Craven Week. Look at the playera who the Sharks have signed for 2015 compared to other unions and you will understand the point im trying to make

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 85) : As I said, if the depth we currently have in our backline is due to Straueli, then he sure took his time in figuring out how to build this kind of backline depth, as we’ve never had this sort of depth during his time there.

And therefore we need to give the same amount of time to our new recruiter (seems slammerboy might know whom it is), before we claim that we have lost every chance of getting new players, due to Straueli leaving.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 90) : Im sure we will get new players but we want the best available, at this rate we are going to end up with paying customers to the academy and Im afraid that most of those guys just wont make it – which will mean buying in experienced quality to fill gaps in our Super squad – which wont be easy competing against other SA franchises and even more so against the foreign currencies.
