    Exactly.

Pathetic rugby, but a CC victory in Kimberly is rare – rather just saddle that gift horse.

Had Wright and Jordaan been a little less selfish and we would have handed them.

That said, both head generally good games.

Just hope this missed opportunity doesn t cost us a home semi final ….

  • @Original Pierre (Comment 119) : well at least the Sharks have 4 points more than last year this time, but yes I must agree playing against 14 for most of the game the Sharks should have secured the bonus point.

  • @Original Pierre (Comment 119) : Seriously, you are worried that a missed bonus point in the first match of the year is going to cost a home semi-final?????? Come on, if the Sharks win their remaining games with a bonus point, they will definitely have a home semi, and a home final. If they lose one or more games, it will be those losses that cost the Sharks a home semi final, even if we miss the home semi by one point, not this missed bonus point. Claiming this bonus point will cost us a home semi is just a ridiculous concern after the first game of the season.

  • The Lions are a marvel to watch. The skills and vision they display are awesome. The John Mitchell template? The sooner the RWC comes and goes the sooner White and his 2007 game plan can leave, and the sooner Mitchell can take over. Even HM has evolved his game but White is still stuck in the past. Pity Brendon couldn’t move to Durban, Sharks were a very complete and competitive team under his watch.

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 122) : I believe it was a tongue in cheek comment made on the basis of the new Sharks Jake White inspired “template” which saw us miss out on a home semifinal in Super rugby this year due to a complete lack of 4 try bonus points.

I mean come on, playing against a Griquas team with 14 men for 73 minutes and we can’t even score 4 tries? Pfffft.

It’s that lack of killer instinct we ave all seen at the Sharks that always means we read Sharks headlines such as:

“Sharks hold on for win over [x] team”
    “Sharks edge brave [x] team”
“Sharks battle to win over [x] team”
    “Sharks survive [x] team scare”

When do we ever see the Sharks putting teams to the sword? Nah, they coast like they’re at the beach, bru.

I maintain that the Sharks are the most frustrating team to support in world sport.

  • @Feather (Comment 124) : “the new Sharks Jake White inspired “template” which saw us miss out on a home semifinal in Super rugby this year due to a complete lack of 4 try bonus points.”

That statement is just as ridiculous. If the Sharks had won every single Super Rugby match they played in 2014 without a bonus point they would have ended with 64 points, 6 ahead of the Waratahs. Therefore, it was not the bonus points which cost the Sharks a home semi final, it was the games they lost. Bonus points do not cost home semi finals, losses do.

  • @Feather (Comment 124) : And to further my point, the “vaunted” Crusaders had the same number of wins as the Sharks and only a single bonus point more than the Sharks. I don’t hear anyone complaining that the Crusaders style is so dour they don’t score any bonus points. How about the Brumbies who had one less bonus point than the Sharks? Sharks fans can be so much like the venerable character from American Folklore, Chicken Little, who was infamously concerned that the sky was falling.

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 126) : OK, let’s get real. How likely is it for a team to go unbeaten in Super rugby? Has it ever happened?

And then look at the other side of the coin – what happened to our Stormers friends when they did a good job of defending their way to the top of the log (by winning games with a complete absence of tries and bonus points). How well did that end up for them in the games that really mattered?

Uh uh boetie, the current template sucks and you know it deep down too.

ps did you watch the Waratahs and the Crusaders in the final?

  • @Feather (Comment 127) : They didn’t have to go unbeaten all they had to do was win two matches that they lost. The bonus points are much less relevant than wins. I do remember the Sharks beating both the Waratahs and Crusaders in 2014. No boet, our problem was not bonus points, it was losses to the Stormers, Cheetahs, Highlanders, etc.

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 128) : The targets for a team wanting to win the SR title is fairly simple although achieving them less so

    1. Finish in the top 2 – 18 from 19
    2. Score more tries than your finals opponent (regular season) – 15 from 19
    3. Finish #1 – 13 from 19
4 Top try scoring side (regular season) – 12 from 19

The best defensive side has never won the title unless it also finished near the top in scoring tries

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 128) : yes it was the losses that cost the team, but those losses is made less important by scoring bonus points as 4 bonus points = a win.

  • @JD (Comment 132) : I never said bonus points weren’t important, all I said is that it is ridiculous to be concerned that the missed bonus point in this match may cost the Sharks a home semi. Of course it is better to earn bonus points than to not, but ultimately losses are what costs a team, and bonus points, if enough are accumulated can overcome a loss.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 113) : I thought Wright had a very promising start to his senior career; nice crisp pass, decent kicking game, good composure and tactical appreciation… I’ll be keeping a keen eye on him to see whether he can build on this. As for Paul Jordaan, while his decision making on when to pass and when to go himself at times left much to be desired, generally I liked what I saw, and I think if given a consistent run in the 12 jersey, he may very well turn out to be a very fine inside centre. And then finally, S’bura, potentially the next great Sharks 13 in the making!

  • @Culling Song (Comment 134) : Hi CS, I too like Jordaan at 12, I especially liked what I saw with him outside Steyn in the last few SR matches. I think he struggled a little in this match due to the fact that playing outside Zeilinga, more of the decision making was placed on his shoulders, and he struggled a bit. There can be a lot of complaints about the way Frans Steyn plays 10, but one thing is for sure, he controls the game at 10, he is very much the decision maker. Jordaan excelled outside Steyn both when Steyn is at 10 and at 12. Just my opinion though. 😉

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 135) : We also have to remember that Steyn tends to draw a lot more attention from the opposition than Fred does, thus opening up more for a player like Jordaan to play off Steyn.

  • You can clearly see the hand of Hawies in the Griquas play – some nice passages with plenty of off-loading. The players just lack the skill levels to complete. Given the Sharks record against the Kwas in Kimberley it would have been folly to expect the players to roll over and play dead once they were down to 14 men.

All in all not a bad start from the Sharks but a pity not scoring 4 tries against 14 men. I really liked what I saw from Wright.

Do yourself a favour and go read Brendan Venter’s blog on superrugby (Art of execution). “I believe our biggest problem in South African rugby, at present, and the fundamental reason we are not scoring enough tries, is because our local sides’ conversion-rate post a line break is unbelievably poor.” That describes the Sharks (and most SA teams) perfectly.

  • Despite what is said above I think the Sharks backline is weak,on attack they run sideways or drift sideways the GWK are far better, that backline runs straight lines with players in support to offload to,always attacking and crossing the gain line,Sharks have learnt nothing from their problems in SR
